Histronics

What scifi/fantasy movie do you think best used an actual historic event as part of the backdrop, or, plot of the movie? Doesn't have to be a main part of the story, but the use of the historic event moved the story along. For example; Magneto being caught up in the whole WW2/Concentration camp situation. Something like that...

The first film that comes to mind is TIME AFTER TIME, which revolved around two real-life historical characters: H. G. Wells and Jack the Ripper.

Final Countdown- Modern Aircraft Carrier arriving right before Japan attacks Pearl Harbor.

That was cool..as was Final Countdown WEW...

I never looked into it, but did the guy from "Kate Leopold" really invent the elevator? I wonder how TREK 2 would have been if they had used the JFK assassination as GR originally wanted to do...

It was going to be a completely different movie about time travel and the JFK assassination. Or, I should say, it could have been that movie if circumstances had been different and Paramount hadn't thrown the franchise to Bennet and Meyer.

So Khan was on the Grassy Knoll? Good to know.

I guess I missed Khan monolguing: "On Earth...two hundred years ago, I was on the grassy knoll..." :p

Does The Time Machine count? The 1960's version of course. I guess that is kind of cheating with your question, but it was the first movie that came to mind...

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension for using Orson Wells' 1938 halloween broadcast of War of The Worlds as a cover for an actual alien invasion.

It is not a movie exactly, but the NBC show Dark Skies took the premise and ran with it, basically tying every historical event since Roswell to a grand Alien conspiracy. I did enjoy how they tied everything into real world events, it is just a shame that the show only got one season and we did not get to see where it was all going.

I'm going to stretch the definition of sci-fi/fantasy probably past it's breaking point by including "alternate history" broadly defined and say Titanic.

I really wish they'd put this out on DVD.

I agree..and I actually liked DARK SKIES more than I did XFILES...
