History: The force that gives us meaning?

I thought this would be a good place to ask you guys for some recommendations. I am taking Interpreting U.S. History this semester and among our loads of other reading material we need to choose two books to write reviews on. They have to have been written later than 1995, and of course have something to do with U.S. history. Any suggestions?

I took a class called War and U.S. Foreign Policy since 1945 last year and one of the readings was The Cold War: A New History by John Lewis Gaddis. It's a decent book and good fodder for review writing IMO, particularly in the context of "interpreting history." Gaddis wrote about the cold war both during and after it and remarks on his past judgments, correct and otherwise.

If I didn't believe in the importance of history I wouldn't be going into the field that I am today. I am working on becoming an archivist so that I can be part of maintaining the historical record.

Hey me too! I fact I just received my Information Science Masters degree last month. I'm trying to get on at a museum with an attached research library and archives. Of course funding always gets cut from the archives first.

Sure. I like 1776 and Founding Brothers. What Would The Founders Do? is also interesting. The recent biographies of Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin are also very good.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Founding Brothers looks especially interesting. Any more recommendations are welcome.

Yay for us! I am in the last year of my Master's program. I will end up with an M.A. in Public History. I am interning at the State Archives right now, and I just love it! I hope you get that position you're working towards.
