History Of The World, Part 2

So, what do we think? Will Mel Brooks be able to pull it off again? Looks like some good names in there, but are they on the same level as the original batch of stars?

Other than Spaceballs, Mel's been more miss than hit for me since the late 70s, " but it's Hulu, which I already subscribe to, so I'll give it a chance. I'm sure there will be at least a few chuckles.

Mel Brooks is way past his sell-by date. Frankly, I didn't think History of the World, Part I was that funny.

I am just shocked he even got the film made.

Never a big fan of the original, kinda down there in the weeds for me, but being a Brooks film I will likely check it out unless word of it stinking beats me to it.

Looks more like Drunk History than the original film. I'll watch an episode or 2.

I'd love a Jews in Space movie!

Although Marjorie Taylor Greene would think it was a documentary.
What with all the space lasers, she definitely would.

We were promised Jews In Space too!!!

Fun fact: The music from "Jews in Space" is the same as the "Men in Tights" song.

"We're men (MANLY men), we're men in tights...YES!" :guffaw:

I don't believe that Jews in Space is milkable for more than another few shorts at most, but that's probably what I'm most hoping for here. I got a few chuckles, and a few groans from the preview. Part I was super-silly, but it had quite a few outstanding and memorable parts, including JiS, the Fifteen Commandments, Madeline Kahn.

It does have a murderers' row of talent in its cast and I'm encouraged by Wanda Sykes as one of the writers. Certainly worth watching.

As for how it'll compare with the original, I've honestly only seen it once years ago and don't remember much about it other than generally enjoying it. Blazing Saddles remains the Mel Brooks gold standard for me.

Well, it seems it's on the one streamer I don't have, of course. LOL..

Part of what made Mel Brooks so good is that everyone was a target. No holds were barred. But then, around the time of Spaceballs, things changed. I think Mel was told to dial it back a bit. So much so that the slapstick that replaced some of the off color comedy just hit flat. Sure, there are funny moments in Spaceballs and Robin Hood (the Patrick Steward ending was brilliant), but Dracula: Dead and Loving it? In Mel's own words: "Voof!"

So we'll see. I may spring for a free trial. It is Mel Brooks, after all.

Mel Brooks is well past his sell-by date. Frankly, I don't think he's made a funny movie since the 1983 remake of To Be or Not To Be -- which he starred in but didn't write or direct.

Same. For me it's Young Frankenstein, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and Spaceballs. Those are what I consider the standard when it comes to Mel Brooks films. I love many more of his movies, but those are the "I will watch them any time of the day, even if my house is on fire" movies.

And now, one of my favorite moments:

I couldn’t get past the first episode, it was so bad. Absolutely nothing about it was funny.

Having watched it all, it was okay. There were definitely some moments worth seeing over and over again, but for the most part it was really miss more than hit. Part of it, I think, was due to the differences in acting ability. There were some old pros in there, but also some less than skilled actors, and so the end result was a mishmash of half baked and well-done.

Just watched the first episode and...oof. I think I laughed two, three times and cringed a lot more. Not much really going for it despite all of the acting talent.
