Historical Twitter: tweets through the ages

The inspiration for this fun thread came through watching wechoosethemoon.org, which recreates the Apollo 11 mission from pre-launch to setting foot on the moon through live shoutcasting of the CM/LM and CAPCOM communications, video, pictures, computer animation, and even through imagined tweets (using some form of 60s Twitter) between CAPCOM, the CM and the LM.

This latter aspect made me curious. Has NASA pioneered some form of Twitter back in the 60s space race? Will future Moon visits and even a Mars landing be Twittered?

Further to that, and having discussed with others via Live Messenger this evening, we also wondered: what if they had Twitter in the distant past, and what might have been said back then? Would Paul of Tarsus have sent his letters to the Corinthians using 140 characters or less? Had Neville Chamberlain held in his hand a tweet of paper?
