Spoilers His Dark Materials TV series

io9's Comic-Con report contains a wealth of information about the production and one thing in particular stands out: Unlike most live-action films with CGI characters that don't involve Andy Serkis, the actors did not perform alongside balls on sticks but rather puppets who the could physically interact with

Since the characters’ relationships with their daemons are so crucial to the story, many of the scenes utilising them were filmed with an actor wielding a physical puppet, who could then be later edited out in post-production. [Ruth] Wilson and [Dafne] Keen noted how much having the actor physically playing their daemons made a difference, instead of just using a ball on a stick, because it gave them someone to interact with.
I think this is an excellent idea and I hope it becomes more common place alongside motion-capture performances.
Yeah, I heard about that the other day, it is a really cool idea. It's got to make things a lot easier to react to realistically than just a tennis ball or some random thing like that.

We finally know who is voicing who:
  • Joe Tandberg is Iorek Byrnison
  • Cristela Alonzo is Hester
  • Kit Connor is Pantalaimon
  • David Suchet is Kaisa
  • Brian Fisher performs animal noises and vocal characteristics as Mrs. Coulter's Golden Monkey
No sign of Iofur Raknison yet.

I'm only familiar with Suchet (the one and only Hercule Poirot!) and Alonzo (the female lead in Cars 3), but I'm sure they'll all be great.

Apparently they are already far enough into production on Season 2, that Lin-Manuel Miranda is already done filming all of his scene for the season.
Executive Producer Jane Tranter explained to EW that they chose to film the two season just a few months apart because Season 2 starts picks up right after the end of Season1, and they wanted to make sure Dafne Keen didn't age to much between seasons.
That makes sense, the early seasons of Lost were supposed to cover just a few months, but Malcolm David Kelley, who plaid noticeably aged a lot more than that in the time he was on the show. I remember a couple scenes where he came back after he left the main cast, and you could tell they were trying to cover up the fact that he was taller than the last time we saw him.

One last trailer and this one is the best one yet!

We still don't have a voice actor confirmed for Iofur, but I'm relieved to see we're getting his storyline because we see him and Iofur fight in the ice palace of Svalbard!

This does look great. I don't get HBO, but this does look like a potential buy once it comes out on blu-ray and/or digital.

^ Don't think so. That said, the show will likely do more than the novels did to introduce elements/characters that will take greater prominence later.

So, this show will have more than one season per novel?
Season 1 will cover Northern Lights/The Golden Compass, and Season 2 will at least start The Subtle Knife. I read an interview where they were talking about how they filmed Season 2, which starts right at the beginning of The Subtle Knife, right after the end of Season 1, which ended with the end of The Golden Compass.

On a side note, The Secret Commonwealth, the second entry of The Book of Dust sequel trilogy, was published this week. I completely forgot so I only just ordered my copy today.

Nearly 50% longer than La Belle Sauvage, eh? Guess I'll try to cram it in over winter break. But, what a beautiful cover!

Indeed it is! I'm hoping the plot is more engaging this time around. Having Lyra as an adult instead of a baby will probably help.

Damn, I still haven't read the first Book of Dust book yet.
Given the 20-year time jump, and the fact that the main characters of La Belle Sauvage are all kids (and Lyra herself just a baby), I doubt you'd miss much plot-wise by skipping it.

And honestly, it doesn't really add anything to the overall tapestry. There are a few fun sequences after the adventure kicks off, but that's about all they are.

I feel like I should read up on this.

But I also feel like I should re-read His Dark Materials first...
