Spoilers His Dark Materials TV series

Curiously, the mini-series appears to be billed as His Dark Materials and not The Golden Compass or Northern Lights, which seems to indicate BBC's confidence that they'll produce the entire trilogy.
Season Two was ordered last September. ;)

Will watch the trailer tomorrow, probably. Gotta project it properly. :p

Hm, not much of a teaser... low rez, poor contrast, no daemons, and the alethiometer is... flat? I guess it's not a big deal, but the movie version was perfect, even if its use was marred by way too many cutesy effects/animations.

Also surprising to see "Dr Carne", a non-book character, get such major billing - I assumed he was the Master of Jordan College, and maybe he is, renamed, as Wikipedia's fairly extensive cast list doesn't include that character? Stay tuned, I guess...

I like what I'm seeing so far. The alethiometer does look very different from how the book described it, but I'm not to bothered by that as long as it's function is still the same.

Clarke Peters is playing the Master of Jordan, although this is the first time I've seen them giving the character actual name. I was also surprised how he was highlighted in the trailer, so I wonder if they're expanding his character in some way. Which makes sense considering you don't bring a veteran character actor like Clarke Peters for one or two scenes.

^ Well, I've never heard of him, so I hope the role isn't expanded at a detriment to the story. (Also, bringing in recognizable faces for one or two scenes is kinda the definition of "veteran character actor"; their relatively brief appearances is what differentiates them from leads. :p)

1) Stop what you're doing and watch The Wire. Right now. I'll wait.

2) Character actors do much more than just one or two scenes.

3) Why aren't you watching The Wire? Go. Now!

Looks increasingly promising. Plus, it looks like they're not shying away from the darker elements of the story.

The film adaptation wasn't as bad as people try to claim.

Yes, it suffered from truncation and a forced dulling of its source material's anti-religious overtones due to controversy, but it was otherwise a fairly faithful adaptation.I

The TV adaptation looks pretty good as well and could potentially go for at least four seasons, if not five, due to the existence of the first two books in The Book of Dust Trilogy, which is set both before and after the events of Northern Lights/The Golden Compass and The Amber Spyglass, although the TV adaptation would have to find a way to avoid confusing viewers since the first installment in The Book of Dust Trilogy only features Lyra as baby.

Well it is just different taste, by the way just bought The Book of Dust La Belle Sauvage...I am excited about that one!
My kids grew up on His Dark Materials...among other things.

I enjoyed the movie for what it was and the fact that they had harnessed lightness and darkness. This though seems overly dark. I hope that's only the trailer though and that there's actually more to it than just darkness.

The books were OK. I liked the first and second ones the best. Thought the 3rd one was a mess.

After New Line butchered his Golden Compass movie in the edit, Chris Weitz went straight to directing the second Twilight movie, and said it was a relief to work for a studio that believed in their project's source material.

... I think that about says it all.

Does anyone know what the format will be? One season per book? Also, will the first volume have different titles in North America and Europe?
