Hinkiness

Okay, I'm curious to see how some individuals here at TrekBBS would respond to a situtation I know of. I think it's hinky...probably way beyond hinky.

There's an instructor at the college, late in his thirties who lives in a studio apartment across the road from campus. His girlfriend moved out over the winter break adn back into the dorms. He likes to socialize with his students, even to as far as having his students sleep overnight at his apartment, while his girfriend sleeps in the dorms.

There is a lot more stuff about this guy that I'm not going into. I've known him for nine years and I and my fiancee don't associate with him anymore.

I had to look up the word "hinky," but yes, the guy sounds like a bit of a creep. I don't think professors should date their students.

Well obviously there are some issues with that situation. Even if he is totally harmless and just wants to pretend he hasn't left his youth, it's not appropriate.

that is a harassment suit just waiting to happen. all one student has to do is claim (whether it's true or not) that he offered them a little quid pro quo action and all of his behavior would come out. that would not bode well for his career in academia.

Hinkey isn't the word I'd use.
Report him.

They appear to be between 18 and 20, which is about half his age. They tend to be his current students. When I still associated myself with him over a year ago, I've seen his students comment on Facebook pictures of his family functions.

I have known plenty of professors who have been friends with their students and invited them over to their houses for various reasons. But if he's just doing it with girls and just one-on-one, it looks incredibly shady. It's legal, I guess, but it's not terribly professional.

It's not that professional, but it doesn't matter, they are adults.

Of course, I'm speaking as someone dating a former Instructor.

It really depends on if he's taking advantage of students and what the policy is, professionally speaking. Most universities have some sort of policy in place for their faculty. If he's not violating that, then it doesn't really matter.

That's right. Some schools even have policy in place that is supposed to help avoid even the appearance of impropriety.

He has a very broad definition of "nice". He has led on exes, and another women tons of times. I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of his students thinks he's interested in her/them when he isn't.
