Highlander remake on the way

How about an Israeli playing an Egyptian pretending to be a Spaniard? :shifty:
Sure why not. Generally Mediterranean or North African lineage - and preferably not a better Scottish accent then your Highlander - is what one might be looking for.

I don't know, I kind of think having a Frenchman playing a Highlander and a Scotsman playing an Egypto-Spaniard was part of the original movie's charm.

Nah. For Ramirez they should get an actor that could plausibly be Spanish (but really Egyptian!), as opposed to a guy who'd be an awesome stand in for other Sean Connery roles, presumably ones where his Scottishness made a lick of sense.
I was joking by suggesting they once again cast a Frenchman and a Scot for roles which don't suit either nationality. ;)

Every once in a while I hear "news" about the remake going forward, get frustrated that it's STILL going nowhere, and simply go and rewatch some of the original and... Remember that there's no real point to the remake. The original is a delghtful piece of campy 1980s kitsch that belongs exactly where people left it. The mixing of Connor (sorry gang, no E, never an E), the Kurgan, Ramirez, and the Queen soundtrack will NEVER happen again and there's just no point trying.

The CONCEPT of immortal people fighting each other through time while being living history in the present day is elegantly simplistic, and the TV series explored it basically to death over six years - but that was over a decade ago. IMO, the television series was the best home for the franchise and I'd relish a new generation audience delving into the immortals' world and themes. I'd love a soft reboot a la Doctor Who, give us a third (or is it fifth?) Highlander (hell, don't even make him a Macleod - there are plenty of other clans to explore), make him older than the existing guys (Colin Macleod was originally Roman, and no one batted an eye in his case), keep it grounded in the present and have more fun with it.

No matter the next iteration of the franchise, it must be based in the present day. As long as they stay away with a former producer's obsession with putting Highlander in a post-apocalyptic future (Highlander II, The Source, and the original vision for the sixth season of the TV show - all terrible ideas or execution) they'll be good. Search for Vengeance is the only time the concept workd, but IMO it was completely unnecessary in the first place.

Of course, Highlander III lacks the awesome that were Ramirez and the Kurgan. :D

That's another flaw of the franchise, I think. Ever since the first movie they've always tried to make their villains into the next Kurgan, instead of just doing their own thing.

The sex scene was better than the first one, however...

I wonder if Lambert used to have that written into his contract.. That he HAD to have a steamy scene... Seems like most of his movies at the time had them thrown in gratuitously..

There were more movies in the 1970s to early 1990s with sex and nudity than there are nowadays in general. The big rise in budgets and the shift in movie-going habits which has left teens as an increasingly important target audience has led to an increasing focus on PG-13 fare.

Interestingly enough, the sex scene was absent in the theatrical release of HL3, but was reinserted for the video release. I am assuming they were trying to go for the teen crowd that may have watched the TV series by making the film PG-13.

AND he was married to Diane Lane. How lucky can one guy get?!

Hey I just realized something wasn't Highlander basically remade when they did the third one?

No, I believe it was a continuation from the first. Totally ignoring the alien crap...;)

Continuity-wise it was a sequel to the first movie, ignoring the TV series that was airing at the time. Plot-wise however it was basically a remake of the first movie. Conner wants to be left alone, meets girl, shares secret of immortality, challenged by large brutish Immortal, defeated in first battle, brute kidnaps someone Conner cares about, they battle, Conner wins.

Even right down to the part where the villain terrorizes the kidnapped loved one with reckless driving.

III is a terrible film, it's just a rehash of the first one without Ramirez, and it is horribly paced, with naff dialogue and below par special effects. The only reason it isn't constantly ragged on as an awful Highlander sequel is because it lacks the absurdity of the second one, making it instantly forgettable.

For all its faults in terms of taking outrageous liberties with the concept, Highlander II is a much better movie. At least it had some well played villains in the form of John McGinley and Michael Ironside and some interesting visuals and ideas about the future. Highlander III has virtually nothing to redeem it.

Yeah. While I really like the Connor/Duncan & Duncan/Faith storylines in Highlander: Endgame, Highlander II is my favorite sequel in the franchise because of the kickass visuals, particularly during that street fight against the 2 flying henchmen. It's an absurd sequel that feels like it was directed by someone who hadn't even watched the 1st movie (making it all the more shocking that the 1st & 2nd films were directed by the same guy!). The environmentalist story about the ozone shield is requires too much suspension of disbelief that is already strained by the Zeist stuff & the immortal stuff. But if you don't pay attention to the plot, the visuals make for a spectacular film.

So are there any actors officially attached yet? I am hoping that it is set in NYC though. There could be some great backdrops for head choppin' action. FAO Swartz would be a fun one.

I have this idea in my head (assuming the TV show didn't already do this) of MacLeod fighting some guy in a fine glassware shop. In the midst of all this action, you'd have some visual comedy with the proprietor freaking out that someone is going to knock something over or break something. The fight ends and he breathes a huge sigh of relief that they didn't knock anything over. Then the Quickening happens and the entire place shatters!

Gah! Why did you post that? After years of intense therapy, I'd finally scoured every memory of that movie from my brain! :scream:

Wait you have to work to forget Highlander: The Source, I though it should be easy since the movie is apparently so forgetable the makers felt the need to include a recap of the plot of the film up to the end IN THE FILM.

Hehe, yeah... I was almost willing to accept Highlander: The Source as not totally fucking terrible until that recap at the end. That was when I totally lost it. What's insane is that Highlander: The Source is worse than you could possibly imagine, even by the incredibly low standards set by the previous Highlander sequels.

Oh, you won't find a bigger Queen fan than me, I can assure you. I love the original film, and like the show. I just can't see the point of remaking it, just to copy such a major part of the original. Give me something all new.

Although to be honest A Kind of Magic is my least favourite album Queen album, except maybe Jazz.

Really. I'd say A Kind of Magic is probably my favorite Queen album and "Princes of the Universe" my favorite Queen song. I also love Jazz. I mean, how can you not love "Fat Bottomed Girls," "Bicycle Race," "Don't Stop Me Now," and "Mustapha"?

My least favorite Queen album is probably either Flash Gordon, Made in Heaven, Hot Space, or News of the World. (Outside of the overplayed "We Will Rock You"/"We Are the Champions," News of the World is thoroughly forgettable.)

I would rather see a series than a movie...unless the movie was a jumpstart to a series (made for TV movie that is).

Adrian Paul will forever be my favorite Highlander and he is a hard act to follow on the series end. I would still be open to a remake because I enjoy the Highlander universe and the Duncan MacLeod character.

Interesting, we are obviously both big Queen fans but with quite differing views.

News of the World is my favourite Queen album except the overplayed We Will Rock You & We Are the Champions. Not that they aren't great songs, but it's hard to listen to them in album context having heard them so very often. I love the rest of the album, especially It's Late which is the most tremendous out & out rocker in Queens' catalogue IMO, fucking epic, and Spread Your Wings is such a touching and beautiful tune.

My Melancholy Blues I also love, very beautiful vocal melody and fantastic piano playing, and a quite different direction for the band, although granted you could say that about 50% of everything they have done.

Jazz? Well I like it, there's not a Queen album I don't love, but I find its considerable eclecticism to be a little forced, and I don't feel it flows as an album very well, at least not as well as most of the albums that preceeded it. Loads of good songs though, granted.

Justin Lin No Longer Directing HIGHLANDER Reboot

Amidst the explosion of recent success he has enjoyed, director Justin Lin (Fast Five) has stepped aside as the director of Summit Entertainment’s Highlander reboot. Lin had been attached to direct the film since Summit acquired the rights to the property back in May of 2008. However, his schedule is somewhat hectic of late what with plans to direct Fast and Furious 6 next and potentially the latest Terminator installment after that. All scheduling issues aside, though, Lin will remain on the project in an executive producer capacity.

The sequels were crap, but the original Highlander movie is a classic and most importantly a product of it's time. Half of what made a movie about immortal guys swordfighting in New York is that fucking Queen was rocking out behind every other fight scene. Can they do that now? No, they're going to hire some nu-metal losers or fucking Nickleback this time.

They need to leave Highlander alone.

They could just reuse the original songs. That would make sense.

I have yet to see Fast Five; how is this guy as a director?

^I'd say he's pretty stellar. Fast Five wasn't the smartest of movies, but god damn it was entertaining. He knows how to direct action and uses whatever script he has as most he can.

Justin Lin has come along way since Better Luck Tomorrow, which is definitely not an action movie. Tokyo Drift and Fast & Furious were just whatevers, but he really hit his stride with Fast Five. It was definitely better than i thought it was going to be. Third times a charm I suppose.

I'm sure this has already been said but with regards to the orignal Highlander Movies, I really wished they had listened to the tag line from the first film. "There can be only one"

Both Highlader II: The Quicking and Highlander III: The Sorcerer, where poor movies. Maybe a 2 out of 5.

I would rate III as a better overall film than II but not by much. I think Ironside played a much better villian that the villian in the third.

with regards to the new Highlander film, they may once again find themselves with the same problem the original had. We already know how the story must end with 2 Immortals having one final battle for the Prize. So if you have that in the movie you can't have a sequel without some sort of convoluted reason

The problem with all the sequels was the original movie's ending left no room for sequels.

They can get around that problem if the make the last fight of the remake movie NOT between the final two immortals. Just have Connor fight someone really evil. Leave the final fight for the second movie or third movie if they really want to make it a trilogy.
