Highlander Reboot - Here We Go Again

Looks like it's actually happening this time.. No word on casting, but the script is in and pre-production starts later this year. Colony's Ryan Condal did the treatment...

I'm just not sure how I feel about this yet... Just please God... Don't let Ryan Reynolds still be attached to this... He's wonderful as Deadpool... But let's let some unknown-ish actor tackle this role.

SyFy story

I'm always interested in another take of this. There's so much that can be explored.

Also, cue the "Not interested. There can be only one..." joke in 3... 2... 1....

Highlander really is one of those 80 concept films that sadly faltered due to a lack of planning. Each film was just done without any broader scope to universe building.
My recollection is that Highlander('86) and Endgame (2000) can be watched as a fairly decent Duology with minimal narrative issues.

As a standalone film I enjoyed Final Dimension ('94), that memory wipe gimmick makes it a huge plot issue illustrating what I mean by 'lack of planning'. The Quickening ('91) is just a huge sidebar that try as I may can't wholly enjoy even with Connery back. The Source ('07) is just bad. Poorly executed tropes and dismal choreography in the fights.

It's a franchise with lots of potential in search of someone with the creative and financial backing to realize several years worth of storytelling.

There is no Highlander without Queen. I shudder to think what this new version will do, or that we might get some God Awful remake of a great Queen song by some shit band of today.

There's no saying they won't use at least Princes of the Universe in the new version. No saying they will, either, but you never know.

There definitely is a lot of potential in the concept, so I am curious to see what they could do in a reboot.

Make it a new character and I'm fine with it. Not Connor, not Duncan - not even a McLeod - a whole new character. All he has to be is Scottish for the name to make sense. I can handle a new character a lot better than recasting an old favorite.

I hope they do it properly and start the story on Ziest.

I do have this irrational fear that they’ll, realising they could never out Queen Queen on the soundtrack, bring in Coldplay to do something ‘woe is me, being immortal sucks’ songs instead.

The first film was the best of the bunch, with Highlander III: The Sorcerer being the 2nd best entry for the films. The last two films range from poor to being virtually unwatchable.

Of course any new film has to use this.

If you just watched those two as a new viewer, it would make very little sense. Endgame is really a sequel to the series, and contradicts the original film.

Forgive what may be a stupid question, but...what memory wipe?

Agreed.

Not that that's a terribly high bar to meet or anything, but that's also probably because it's pretty much a straight remake of the original movie.

Even the first film wasn't THAT great, it was really just a combination of things that made it work.

Yeah, it's hardly a classic, it's just so incredibly '80s that it works on pure atmospheric levels.

Bring back Clancy Brown, or I riot.
Clancy Brown wasn't interested in coming back to the franchise when he was invited to appear on Highlander: The Series (he turned down playing the Kurgan in flashbacks as well as the alternate option of having a new role created for him), so I'd be surprised if he'd want to return for a new feature film.

The remake has big shoes to fill...don't forget that Highlander won the Academy Award for best movie ever made.
