But there's also far more movies than there were back in the day and movie going really isn't as much of a cultural experience. If I had to guess, I'd bet number of viewers would favor older movies. For example, you might watch the Hobbit, but there are 10-20 other movies available to watch as well.

I'm looking at boxofficemojo unadjusted, the 2nd link given in the thread. And you're 100% missing my point which I laid out in my first post. Titanic or Gone with the wind, who cares, my whole point is that nobody can claim "Highest Grossing movie ever" in ANY of their marketing. Adjusted for inflation or not (I was using boxofficemojo unadjusted at first)

So the question posed in this thread makes no sense! And my point has NOT been soundly refuted since nobody has said what movies are claiming to be #1. since either Titanic or, if it makes you happy, Gone with the Wind. I'm still correct, in either situation.

That's true too.

Population increase could also skew ticket sales in favor of newer movies.

Yeah, population growth crossed my mind after I wrote that. Still, adjusting for population is better than adjusting for inflation because ticket price increases aren't necessarily only for inflation (right now, we have several different prices due to 3D movies and movies are routinely more expensive to produce).

So this whole thread is based on you seeing Titanic and then Avatar claiming to be the highest grossing movies ever (without adjusting for inflation) and wondering, about 5 years later, how those 2 specific movies could have claimed that at the time?

Before Titanic, there was Jurassic Park, E.T., Star Wars, Jaws. All claimed the title, or were acclaimed as such. (ETA) There were others which held the title, but shouldn't have without being adjusted. So basically, since the era of the Summer Block Buster movies (Jaws is usually considered the first Summer Block Buster.) different movies have tried to lay claim to the title, Avatar is just the most recent.

Fair enough. I was just confused by the timing of the thread, as all of those movies came out over a decade ago (when the question, to me, seemed more relevant) and I was confused if a recent movie was trying to muscle in on this claim. Avatar no longer really feels recent to me, for example.

My mistake.
