Hey, watch the language...

It's called living a society. In such a society people should see a child in and not using foul language in front of them.

And here I was, thinking that society was all about law enforcement, national defense and paved roads. I didn't realize that adhering to puritanical and outdated notions of what language is consider to be polite was so central to civilization.

Some people find the use of the word "God" in a moment of frustration to be offensive. How scrupulous are you about respecting that convention?

There are places for people who expect every aspect of their environment to be governed according to the whims of the whiniest, most religious members society. Utah is one, Iran is another.

There should also be that part of the brain, or desire to live in a society, where people are out in public, see kids around, and know better than to curse.

I will add your comments to my "Trekker complaints file".

Sadly, it's getting so big that it's become pretty hard to give new additions the attention that they clearly deserve.

I don't pay attention to kids. They annoy the fucking piss out of me. As a consequence, I really don't give a damn if one of them hears me swear.

Who are we kidding anyway? Kids swear as much as anyone when they're not around their parents if their parents don't allow it.

^ That's a good point. Kids on the street can be just as foul-mouthed as the adults.

This thread has reminded me of something. Did I ever tell you the story of my first exposure to the F word? It was 1975 and I was five years old. I was staying with my grandparents for the weekend, and they got into an argument about something, I don't remember what, Anyway, they were yelling up and down the stairs while my grandma and I were upstairs packing me up to go home, and my grandma shouts "OH FUCK OFF!", Then grandpa yells something back, and grandma shouts "FUCK YOU!!". Then mutters under her breath, "Fucking old man".

I was confused by all this, since I had never heard that word before. After grandma took me home, my mom asked me about my weekend, and I told her about the incident, and asked her what "fuck" meant. She looked at me, and without saying a word, promptly got on the phone and called my grandparents, whereupon, I heard "fuck" several more times.

Years later, I reminded the three of them about this, and they just laughed it off as being "one of their moments".

:rommie: That's a great story!!!!

Why are you already baiting Trekker only 3 days after your last infraction? RJD asked for this to end, but you are still trolling as far as I'm concerned. Comments to PM.

The problem I have with swearing is that the same old curses are used so much that it no longer becomes effective - it has lost its shock value. Using it effectively be it sparingly or in a surprising context, it can be a powerful means to make an emphatic point (if crude)...

...There's a fine art to getting the right balance between carefully targeted shock value and gratuitously clumsy posturing. Most people get it very wrong.

I agree ~ I rarely swear, to others at least, but when I do, they know that I am very put out!
I despise overhearing conversations, usually between men, where every over word is 'fuck' ~ really feel like popping out and buying them a thesaurus :)

One thing I can testify to is that I have learned new and more inventive ways of swearing thanks to the my membership here.

when I hear someone swearing a lot I usually say, "hey dammit! watch the fucking language asshole!"

OTOH, I find it a umm, sad commentary on our society that there are so many people out there who like, can't construct a complete sentence without umm, using the words "shit", "bitch", and/or "motherfucker".

YA NIGGERS ARE BIG ON THE MUTHAFUCKER LINE. U CAN THANK SAM JACKSON FOR THAT.

I'm guessing the Garm Bel Iblis show has officially been cancelled. No big loss. The pilot was lame anyway.
