Hey, I never noticed that before....

At around 25:00, at the end of the scene where we meet the villagers, there's a long shot of everyone walking away to meet Vaal. The last male villager on the right is wearing knee-length pants, not a sarong like the others. Not only that, but he appears to have horrendously besmirched himself, based upon the huge black smear on the back of his trousers.

By the way, why does everyone laboriously walk single-file in this episode? It's really awkward when everyone calmly follows another person, and the last person spins on his/her heels to join the others.

Do you have a screenshot? I suppose he could have (IRL) gotten some powder from the explosions on his clothes.

Is it the guy on the right in the screenshot (from dvd version)?

The guy on the far right... that looks more like branches from a bush than dirt. Maybe he was close to a bush and it just grazed him.

As for his "trousers", it kind of looks like his "skirt" just got pinched in between his legs. Maybe he was sitting down on the scenery waiting for his cue.

I think you're both right. I watched that scene twice last night on the blu-ray, but looking at the still, it's clearer.
 
I just noticed that film frames of Celeste Yarnall may have been the cheat sheet for drawing Theela in "The Lorelei Signal."

We know TAS artists referenced TOS film frames of the Enterprise and traced them, adding a welcome bit of accuracy to the cartoon. They almost certainly got these from the 35mm workprint clips the Roddenberries were selling by mail order at the time (I bought some). If they referenced some shots of Celeste Yarnall as the perfect blonde beauty, they'd never have to pay her for modeling, because she'd never know.

There does appear to be a limit to what ship's stores can manufacture as in "Charlie X" Charlie produced a gift that Rand said wasn't available in ship's stores.
As a kid of 10 watching this rerun in 1973, I somehow imagined the ship housed a few small businesses, a section of a deck set up rather like a mall! Yeah, I thought Charlie visited a perfume shop aboard the Enterprise! Funny the ideas we sometimes conjure.

Initially I had the same thought.

While the term 'stores' usually applied to supplies for the command or fleet (combat stores, food stores) if a Navy ship is large enough, it usually has a retail-like store where sailors can purchase sundry items like toiletries, snacks, tobacco products, non-issue uniform items, and command-themed clothing. The selection is very limited and everything is bought wholesale with a markup that goes into the ship's rec fund.
So your idea has a civilian spin on it (businesses) but otherwise isn't that far off.
 
I can imagine that cashier of the ship's "tuck shop" is one of the duties members of the yeomen's pool might draw. That and "bowling alley attendant", "lifeguard" for the pool, etc.
