I came to this conclusion as well. Pity they deleted the scene where they speculate the planet a result of Earth's early space race.

I speculate that the Kohms developed a biological warfare virus in one of their labs, unleashed it on the Yangs to take down their political system of government, but it got out of hand and/or mutated causing a pandemic over the whole planet...

I wonder how the PD works on folks who don't realize they are space aliens themselves. I mean, deep down, everybody is, thank the "The Chase" meddlers. But supposedly the "Paradise Syndrome" Earthlings, too, enjoyed at least some PD-like protection (even though our heroes make it sound like their own evolved morals rather than a Starfleet dictate).

I think the PD only applies to "natural development", so, I'm surprised that it applied to Roman World, but I guess there was still doubt since Kirk classified it as "An amazing example of Hodgkins's law of Parallel Planet Development." I guess it didn't apply to Miri's Planet since Kirk was responding to a space radio message for help.

Kirk used the reasoning that the Prime Directive doesn't apply to stagnant cultures in "The Apple" and "The Return of the Archons" I could see him applying that to Miri's planet. Though calling it a dying culture would be more accurate.

By the time Kirk started mucking with the planets in both episodes, i.e. destroying their god-machines, both planets revealed advanced technology with hostile weapons pointed into space. That demonstrated proof-positive knowledge of aliens out there. Prior to both planets' attacks on the Enterprise, Kirk never mentioned he was from space (following the PD).

Clearly on that planet your rank equates to how much clothing you are assigned:

• Korby gets a full jumpsuit
• Brown gets trousers plus an undershirt
• Andrea just gets trousers (albeit with modesty straps)

A while back, we had a big talk around here about how the women's uniform was constructed. I can't find it now. But anyway, Grace Lee Whitney had said in an interview that the mini-dress was more like skorts that you had to step into, because it "wrapped around one leg" somehow.

Then contrary evidence and opinions came into it, and a consensus emerged that Grace was wrong, that she was hallucinating, suffering false memories, or something.

But now I see in WALGMO that Majel's dress is wrapped around one leg:

Chapel is stilll wearing a one-piece dress though, so definitely not skorts. Unless the entire dress has integrated underwear and you step into it via the neck hole? Seems an overly complicated way to dress

This seems likely. The number of times I remember seeing an actress wearing a skirt and spankypants during an action sequence is larger than I can count without rewatching the entire series. Uhura was the usual culprit, but there were others, including Rand on one occasion.

I've got out my Starfleet Technical Manual which I got for the uniform patterns and the women's panty is separate. For all that counts.

FJ's research material consisted of The Making of Star Trek and whatever photos his daughter and her friends could get a hold of, probably including 35mm frames sold by Lincoln Enterprises, and a lot of pics published in magazines. I never read that they obtained any actual show artifacts. And I think the uniqueness of FJ's artwork (or "accuracy issues" if you prefer) would tend to support that conclusion.

A couple of things in "Miri"

- When Kirk calls Spock over and hands him the broken tricycle for some reason, Spock looks at Kirk like he's crazy.

Kirk walks away just after this frame, and Spock shoots him a look that's like, "Why the hell did you hand me this thing?" It's one of those moments when these two are not on the same wavelength, and Nimoy gives a very honest, naturalistic performance as to how he would feel about being handed that trike. It's the kind of raw little moment you don't see much of later, especially in the third season, when the well-observed textures of naturalism have given way to more "smooth TV hero" interactions.

- I noticed some weird concentric circles reflected in the window Spock walks up to. I'm pretty sure it's the reflection of the Fresnel lens on a stage light:

He seems to doing it in a professional capacity in "Shore Leave":
SULU: To get some cell-structure records. A blade of grass, a bush, a tree, a flower petal. With these, we can tell the whole planet's biology.
