The device in Scotty's right hand with its "focusing element" (for lack of a better term) looks a bit like a very "stocky" version of Pertwee/Baker/Davison/McGann's sonic screwdriver. Hmm, maybe it's a sonic socket wrench.

There’s a prop we saw a couple of times that didn’t get much screen time. The most we saw of this prop was probably in "The Galileo Seven"—although it popped up a couple of other times, too.
It is a small, hand-held magnifying scope of some kind that Mr. Scott uses to inspect the mechanics and circuitry of the Galileo and inspect the phasers as he drains them of their energy as an alternate fuel source for the shuttlecraft.
We get our first glimpse of it as it is lying on the Galileo’s port "wing" with a lot of other tools (lying under the butt-end of the laser beacon):
As Mister Spock then steps inside to assist Mr. Scott, Scott has one with him as well. (So there must have been two on board.)
Later, Lieutenant Gaetano holds it, assisting Mr. Scott:
Then Scott uses it as he drains the phasers:
This tool crops up fleetingly in "Space Seed" ('way over at screen right) as an Engineering division lieutenant enters the bridge:
And we see it again in "Devil In the Dark:"
Its last on-screen appearance would appear to be in "The Enterprise Incident" as Mr. Scott tries to hook up the Romulan cloaking device:

In "real life," this device would appear to be pretty much what it seems to be on Star Trek: a small, hand-held illuminated magnifier. I don’t know the manufacturer or model of this device—especially from close to fifty years ago now. But a quick check on ebay yields a couple of different similar styles:

Another Scotty Engineering Tool--Some Odd Micrometer-Like Thing
Here's an Engineering-related prop we saw only a couple of times that we recently picked up thanks to the hard fabrication work of Mr. David Wardale over in the UK.
The prop is a small, hand-held piece of clear Plexiglas with a couple of rods jutting out of the side and some red doohickeys on the handle (much like the previously-mentioned Scotty's wrench spanner thing).
The first time we see this (unless I can find some earlier appearance at some point) is in "The Ultimate Computer." Mr. Scott and Mister Spock are up in the Jefferies Tube trying to re-route the M-5 computer. You can just make out in the darkened Jefferies Tube that Spock has this clear tool with the two micrometer-like rods:
We see the tool again (barely) lying on the table between the silver and red emitter units (next to the Erlenmeyer flask with the blue tempera paint) in "The Omega Glory:"
We see this tool again in the Third Season (in "Elaan of Troyius") and, again, Mister Spock is using it:
The way he's holding it, he appears to be taking some measurements of the size of the dilithium crystals being inserted into the dilithium crystal converter assembly.
Mr. Scott uses the tool again to hook up the stolen Romulan cloaking device into the deflector shield mechanism in "The Enterprise Incident:"
And then finally we get a look at the red greeblies adorning the handle:
And in its final appearance it seems to be used as some kind of handle or crank-thing to turn a valve of some kind on one of the wall plant-ons during an "Intruder Alert" in "The Lights of Zetar." The crewmember appears to be gripping the handle in his right hand and his left hand is gripping one of the two pins (the one farthest away from the handle). For this episode only, this pin appears to have been pulled out and reinserted so that it juts out from the handle on the opposite side of the lower pin. The lower pin is then used as the axle/pivot point--kind of like a tire iron.
There is a small black-and-white publicity photo of James Doohan holding this prop. He's holding it in his let hand--the one with all five fingers.
So, it's not much to look at, but here is one of our Micrometer-Like Things. If my count is correct, we now have at least four of these doohickeys:
It has a clear handle with some engraved lines/markings about every centimeter or so. The business end has a diagonal (not a right angle) cut on it. The two long pins jut out from the side and the handle has ten raised red honey-dripper type greeblies. There are also four little fingertip-sized concave indentations on the flip side of this tool.

TWOK : In the scene where Carol and Kirk discuss David in the Genesis Cave, there's some yellow crates. For the first time, in literally hundreds of viewings, I noticed they're labeled "Beirut research", whatever that means

I rewatched "Arena" the other night, and I'm not sure that I ever noticed that Kirk was wearing lace-up boots when he was fighting the Gorn before. I guess those standard-issue Starfleet Beatle boots didn't grip very well at Vasquez Rocks...
I'd also forgotten that Kirk didn't actually fight the Gorn on Cestus III. It was a nearby planetoid. I guess I was misremembering because Sisko said it was Cestus III in "Trials and Tibble-ations."

Speaking of crystals, does anyone remember a TV special about and made to air in conjunction with the DS9: Trials and Tribulations episode including a scene showing a tiny OS style warp core specifically built for the T&T episode but its scenes were not included?
Unless I am crazy, I would swear I remember it being in the special, and expect something about it should be on the nets, but nothing. It's as if it never existed. Anyone else remember it and/or have a lead on an image of that core or any info at all about it?

I still don't understand why that special wasn't on the DS9 DVDs.
Those videos were great. Specially with Ronald Moore with short hair, clean shaven and glasses.
That's it! I never noticed it on the Defiant in any episode. I guess I was crazy, for thinking it was made for T&T. The red hand rails must have planted the idea. Thanks for helping my solve my mystery.
