The detail on the rank stripes in "The Cage" and "Where No Man...".
This would work for Kirk in the second pilot too, Kirk getting promoted to the rank of captain immediately following the ship's return. If I were to ret-con this, I'd say that Pike was a commander during the time of the Cage. Many naval ship c/o are cmdr or Lt-cmdr, but addressed as "captain"
Just watching 'Shore Leave' right now.
Right before Kirk meets Finnegan for the first time, look to the left of Kirk. In the background behind some trees I can see the brown colored vertical and horizontal beams of a shed or small building.
Yes the ranks could have been a little more interesting but pips aren't that fun either and even less noticeable. Not at all surprising as I started to notice some of this in the previous DVD remastering. That's where I also started to discern the infamous and hotly debated gridlines penciled onto the saucer hull. It was with the DVDs I also finally saw the texturing and detail of many of the costumes.
That's a detail I had no idea about, but it makes sense since plain wide silver (or gold) striping seems rather blah.
Yes, they didn't have much money so it is understandable that they had to cut back and save in the long run on the quality of bth set and costume. The acting though is for the most part quite good and we see many characters placed as a comic relief.Yea, a pity they couldn't put that level of effort into the TOS era bridge on a regular basis, but given the budget and time contstraints it's not surprising.
I didn't know that was shot there. Now I wanna go visit.Yes--there are a couple of shots where you can see some small thatched-roof "African" huts. Folks might or might not remember that the TV show "Cowboy in Africa" filmed at the "Africa U.S.A." location where "Shore Leave" was shot.

Up against Gunsmoke and the Monkees? No wonder I've never heard of it!TV show "Cowboy in Africa"
It's a shadow of its former self after major flooding in 1969. It was sold to Tipi Hendren in 1987. It is open again as "Shambala." They love visitors.

Yeah, THAT SHOW!!! It did run for three seasons, but the brilliant suits on CBS cancelled the 4th season of LIS for this epic, that had so much steam left in it, that it apparently averaged a mighty 9.0 in the Nielsens' and made it all the way to January, before being given the heave ho!!! Dumb CBS bastards!!!!!I remember that show. The other African based show, "Daktari", with Marshall Thompson, was interesting, too.
