Hey, I never noticed that before....

Now that I think of it, we didn't see printed paper very much unless you were Sam Cogley. Remember Kirk's reaction to his lawbook collection? The Cage had their fax machine and that seemed to be it.
Are you referring to this?

This scene is from "The Cage". We've been shown books on TOS, but this is the only instance, that I can remember in TOS, when the ship's computer actually spit out a printed paper.

I remember this scene because it looked so passé, and the paper is all yellowish.

I don't know why the prop people didn't use a whiter piece of paper. That piece of paper, coming out of the computer, looked like it might have been sitting out in the sun for a long time. The whole thing looked anachronistic.

"He's dead, Jim."
"Why, Doctor?"
"Because during a fight in Sick Bay, the sedated man with violent tendencies woke up and grabbed one of my many decorative pistols and shot him in the chest."
"Why do you have so many decorative pistols in Sick Bay?"
"Seems rather silly, now that you bring it up. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go take them down and replace them with my collection of super sharp and deadly knives."
The McCoy family dueling pistols, sir! Family heirlooms,

Wonder if he's ever been tempted to challenge Spock to a duel?

Karidian's voice print. "I believe we have a match, Captain."

Also, Karidian read his damning speech quotation from a sheet of paper, and before that he was studying a printed script.

  • Kor's proclamation to the Organians.
  • Starfleet's secret orders regarding Talos IV.
  • The medical records of Gary Mitchell and Elizabeth Dehner (shown on a screen, but clearly paper documents with hand annotations in pen). Oh, and also the printed ESP discussion. And the documents Gary reads in sickbay.
  • The tiny paper labels on the microtapes in the first few episodes.
  • Spock and Sulu use flat slide/swivel calculation devices in several episodes. These are Jeppesen flight computers, which are mainly laminated cardstock.
  • The command pack stolen from Kirk's safe by his android duplicate contained printed cards or sheets.

…and don’t forget there has to be Starfleet toilet paper in the Enterprise bathrooms…wherever they are.

Can anyone make out what is written on the Cage printout?

Mayday
Mayday
Mayday
*something*
S.S. Columbia
North American Continent Expedition
*something* survivors from crash. gravity
*something* within limits.

It's basically what Spock told Pike over the intercom.

Ah, yes. The top secret paper orders that repeatedly refer to "half Vulcan Science Officer Spock." I have to wonder if "half Vulcan" is used every time he is documented in a record somewhere.
Well, let's be honest. Spock blabs about his half human side constantly. He probably asked them to stick it in there.

I actually didn't know what the proper name of that TOS device was. I did a Google search and PADD would pop up. But from the description given, those TOS devices didn't seem to fit the description of a Star Trek PADD imo.

To me, those TOS devices looked more like futuristic clipboards. While I was typing the post, I was debating with myself whether I should call the prop a PADD or an electronic clipboard. I went with electronic clipboard, and now I feel vindicated. :)

According to the scripts, the clipboard prop was referred to as an "Electronic Feinberger Board"
From an old post here on the TrekBBS:
For what it's worth--from the July 27, 1967 Final Draft script of "The Deadly Years"--here's some content from Scene 48:

"48 ANOTHER ANGLE

as Kirk starts toward his command chair, YEOMAN DORIS
ATKINS moves to him, with an electronic Feinberger
board in her hand.

YEOMAN ATKINS
Will you sign this, sir?

Kirk glances at it, takes the pen from her, scribbles
his name on the board and hands it back to her. She
accepts it and walks back to her post. Kirk turns his
attention to Commodore Stocker."

So it is evidently an "electronic Feinberger board." No information on whether it is "computerized, but electronic? Yes.

Considering how many people ran lose that were dangerous or taken control of, how many deadly weapons were left laying around. There should have been far more stabbings than there were.
