[Lapis Exilis]

Has anyone around here watched Hex, the BBC supernatural soap opera/thriller series? I just saw the first couple of episodes and was curious about other people's opinions. So far it seems skillfully atmospheric and mysterious, but a tad ponderous. The acting is quite good and the magical background is being well set up. The main character's visions are very well-handled and I'm certainly intrigued by the mystery presented.

I enjoyed the first season quite a bit, but I found the transition to the second season to be pretty jarring, and although I liked the cast, I didn't enjoy the story arc as much.

I agree with ITL, I wandered off quickly. Then by the third time they reran it after midnight, I walked into the middle of the run where I found the Buffy ripoff was much more enjoyable than the Rosemary's baby ripoff.

In later years, after Hex, the Ghost girl grew into her face and actually eventually became attractive in shows like Serendipity or Lost in Austin.

The men were freakishly thin and all looked like cocaine addicts, with the hair and a slight amount of oiliness, as if skeevy translates to dangerous translates to sexy.

An attractive woman settling for an unattractive idiot (Gotta be both.) makes her less attractive.

Same here. I never got as far as the season 2 finale.

Season 1 is dull as hell! After the first few episodes, I was so bored that I fast-forwarded through any scene that didn't have Thelma in it. The main villain doesn't seem to ever do anything except stand around in the background and ominously stare at Cassie.

I love Thelma. She's such a fun sidekick, although the rules regarding her ghost status are a bit hazy. It's like she's depressed because, now that she's dead, there's no possibility of a sexual relationship with Cassie because she can't touch her. However, she can touch objects, mostly when no one else is watching. However, there are often scenes where she'll be eating a bag of pretzels or something in plain view of other people at the school, and yet no one seems to notice a bag of pretzels being suspended in thin air. So I'm really not sure how this is supposed to work.

Still, I love how well ghost Thelma has integrated herself into Cassie's life. It's easy to forget she's dead. There's a scene in early Season 2 where someone notices that Cassie seems a bit troubled.
"Is it Thelma?"
"No, Thelma's fine. She's actually been very good late...ly..."

Season 2 makes some jarring cast changes but generally seems to pick up the pace and make the episodes much more engaging. Unfortunately, Season 2 isn't available on DVD in the U.S. (except for the 1st 4 episodes of Season 2 that were tacked onto the end of the Season 1 DVD set).

IIRC, Hex wasn't a BBC series. It's clearly British but I thought it was on ITV with A&E distributing the American DVDs.

Actually it aired on Sky One, all those years ago. Nothing to do with terrestrial TV at all.

I quite liked it when I first saw it, I have the DVDs but I haven't watched again since I bought them. The second series got pretty repetitive though.

I saw some of it (the beginning, in French dubbing).
Found it boring and preposterous. Easy to forget to watch it.
There are so many better shows to spend time watching.

Thanks for the feedback, folks. I wasn't sure whether to continue with it or not after the first couple of eps. Sounds like it may not be worth the time.

I have it in my netflix queue, but haven't got to it yet. I know some of the same folks work on Merlin, and it appears more moody then Charmed. But I didn't care for the new Robin Hood and Doctor Who stylings. I figured if I don't like it no harm done.

It was heralded as the British Buffy but, as with most British sci fi, it went for atmosphere rather than action. I really liked it. The first season was slightly better but the drop off was less than other shows (seasons 2 of Dark Angel and Earth Final Conflict suffered more). Jemima Rooper as a junk food addicted lesbian ghost was amazingly good in Hex.

Isn't that pretty much exactly what the ads for the show called it?

I definitely recall something on TV identifying it as the British Buffy, and that's about all I remember of it.
