If I had to change one thing it would be to move the neck of the ship a bit closer to the main defector to give some space between the saucer section and the engines

I think I'd agree with that. I don't want to branded with the mark of the Basher, but I'm a little disappointed by it... I was really hoping for a TMP style ship, but keeping the nacelles of the original. I'm not wild about the "underbite" look caused by the deflector sticking out so far forward either. Hmm, I'll probably get used to it, but first impressions are a bit 'meh'. (I've so far remained on the fence about the iBridge - it does fit in with this new design though).

I haven't read all 17 pages, so forgive me if this has been mentioned already, but... IS THAT A BIT OF BLUE I SEE ON THE NACELLES?! :p

Yup and what gets me is Paramount probably paid big bucks for this crapperprise, when we have great stuff and great artists like these who know Trek and have a feel for the look and the art of Trek.

*sigh*

You know what? I'm sick to death of Trek being done by people who know the "feel" of it.

All that results in is recycled, rehashed pabulum that all looks and feels the same even when its ostensibly doing something new. All the proposed fan designs I've seen share that flaw: they're too conservative. They take the shape and proportions of the original, bolt some new details on it, and call it an update. What that seems to say fans want is...timidity. Trek needs fresh ideas and a willingness to take the good, toss out the rest, and come up with new stories and new designs that work on their own without slavish reference to what came before.

Paramount paid for a professional designer to come in and overhaul the Enterprise, and that's exactly what they got. More power to 'em. :techman:

I have no problem with them taking risks or pushing the design envelope. Actually I welcome it.

Problem is the ship is ugly. ...just...plain...ugly... If ugly is the new bold fresh idea, then man this baby is cutting edge. Plus it mixes old design (saucer looks almost identical to TMP-E) with some stretched out curvy hotrod shapes and looks all mishmashed with no design continuity.

Now if it was a cutting edge radical design change that was pretty, I would be all on board with you.

I think if the engineering hull was more in proportion to the saucer and nacelles it wouldnt look so odd...which odd it looks!

Wouldnt mind seeing some more shots, but right now Id rather see more of the inside and/or pictures of the Kelvin.

Well, that's where I disagree with you. The new Grey Lady is sleek, curvy, and, like a lady, has begun to beguile and seduce me. Bring it on. :)

Well, to be totally fair -- and I say this as a general fan of the new design -- it's John Eaves.

The man designed Nemesis' Scimitar. I'd be hard-pressed to call him a "professional."

Wow I love it!!! I can finally wipe the original series out of my mind and replace it with this new reinvention! I love all the other Star Terk series, and now I have my own canon to fill in the gap suppoted by this new movie! Wooooo!!!

There are some pleasing elements to the new design, but I think the main problem is the arse end of the secondary/engineering hull. The visual "story" that starts at the deflector does not progress well as you head astern. A little tritanium botox injection would help there - we've got Kate Moss where we need Jennifer Lopez, and don't get me started on those nacelle pylons...

I was under the impression that the bulk of the design work for the new film was handled by Ryan Church. And being somewhat familiar with Church's work from the Star Wars prequels and War of the Worlds, this new Enterprise smacks far more of his aesthetic than it does of Eaves'.

I still have some reservations about her secondary-hull, but if she looks anything in profile like Tom Servo indicated in his sketch, I'm sold.
The saucer looks very good (well, it's a saucer, not THAT much they could have done wrong ;) ).
But I love those new nacelles. They are THE design-element that sells this new Enterprise to me. They look fantastic.

I just noticed... one of the 'clamps', 'brackets' (whatever you want to call them) we have seen in the teaser, seem to be outside of the glass-dome of the bussard-collectors...
Did I mention that I love those nacelles? :D

I just want to say how much I love your avatar. There can't be many around here who've seen Backwards forewards .

Ahhh my secret has been revealed. Well played, sir ;)

Erm... first look, i don't like it. The first time i've said something negative about the film. The saucer looks fine, the engineering looks fine but needs to be a little bigger, but the neck and necelles look horrible.

Really, i'd have to see it in action to make a assesment of it. But first impression, don't like it.

It looks ok but I hate the original ENT with the sticking out of the dish and looking so compact. I do love the ENT refit model so much shes a real beaut but of course they were never going to base it on her.

JJ's ship has ugly nacells, while the dish is faithful and hate how it sticks out and it looks TOO SMALL but the rest is fine.

I will give it Above Average MEH.
