Help with Pronunciation of "Anathema"

You know, it's ironic that "Mahna Mahna" is best known as a Muppet Show song, considering that it was originally written for an Italian softcore porn movie.

But yeah, I didn't get it until the second reading either. Hard to tell without the music.

Even more ironic that I remember it being a Sesame Street sketch before it was on TMS. (Though that could just be my old brain playing tricks on me.)

No, you're right. It was featured on Sesame Street first.

I hadn't realized it was originally written for an Italian softcore porn movie. There goes my childhood. :(

And the sentence, grammatically, should read: It's an anathema to me that people can't pronounce anathema properly!

Actually, no. "X is anathema to Y" is a standard and acceptable usage.

I'm English. You heathens keep playing our language ;)

It might be an acceptable usage in the US, but over here in the UK we would usually include the an in the sentence, unless specifically writing in US English. So says pretty much every English teacher I've ever had, including the American one who always marvelled at the differences in the two languages.

news to me buddy, and i AM english!

 :wtf: :scream: Wow, I did not know that. It really is scary where alot of the stuff like that comes from originally.

"Manah-Manah" was first performed by the Muppets on The Ed Sullivan Show in the late 1950's.

Friggin kids ... :)

I stand corrected, but at least I was right about it being on Sesame Street before The Muppet Show. :p

The Ed Sullivan show was a variety show that was sort of a precursor to the current late night tv line-up. Acts like the Beatles and Elvis Presley came to national US attention on the show.

The theatre that hosted the show is now the host theatre to The Late Show with David Letterman, and is called, fittingly enough, The Ed Sullivan Theatre.

And, a pup I am.

Elvis Presley? What's he, like, Elvis Costello's father?

Oh, and you misspelled "beetles".

Oh, for crying out loud. People, Leisner knows all of this already. He's old. He was making a joke. Speaking satirically. Now can we get back to the original topic of the thread, which was... come to think of it, the original topic wasn't particularly relevant either. Very well, resume the irony-blind bickering.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
