Help With A Ship?

I was looking over TOS era ships and I was trying to find one that was similar to the Constitution class/Enterprise but smaller...I mean similar design but with a lower crew compliment and still an exploration vessel. I don't know if any of this is making sense.

I poured through many designs of various classes but still couldn't find what I was looking for.

Any help would be appreciated.

The argument has been made, mainly by me, that the Constellation is actually NOT a Constitution class starship, but rather the class that immediately preceded the Constitution, is slightly smaller, although not enough to be immediately noticeable, and has a comparable crew complement.

I'm leaning towards calling this class the Bonhomme Richard class, just to tweak the fanonistas.

How much smaller are we talking here? Since the Antares from "Charlie X" was considered a survey ship of sorts in the dialogue of that episode, some fans have crafted that originally unseen ship into an exploration-capable design that still has familiar elements yet is quite distinct. Here's Brian Pimenta's classic take, reworked by Kris Trigwell:

This page holds other "classic" surveyors from the fandom (mainly those that have a bibliography entry):

Not many to my personal liking there, tho.

On screen we have seen precious few TOS era designs, but Franz Joseph's single-nacelle destroyers and scouts are more or less "canon" as they have been referenced on computer displays. FJ's Hermes scout might be considered a smaller type of explorer...

My personal fandom favorite in this category is the Starfleet Battles RPG "new light cruiser" ship class, also sometimes called the Kearsarge class. All the components are different from those of Kirk's ship, but the family looks are there, just in a slightly smaller size.

Yeah, that other Bonaventure I've seen quite a lot online over the years, its a nice design, I've seen that render of the TAS Bonnie quite a lot as well. :D

As for the ship you're looking for, there have been some on this board, one was based on the Enterprise but then half scale, I can't remember who made it though...

'Canonically' there isn't much past the Constitution, Antares, and Franz Joseph ships. Of all those, you could cite an Anaters type (from TOS-R), but she's hardly a cruiser by any stretch of the imagination.

SFPO's Surya and Conventry classes (both pre-Mirandas) may suit your needs a bit better. Neither is 'canon', of course, but are generally accepted 'fanon' (and have shown up in official works, such as the comics.)

The Loknar, from FASA, is an excellent lighter-ship for the Federation of that period. A heavy frigate, she's well-gunned (even overly so) and designed for patrol duty. It has a fairly distinctive look (the NX-01's design originally came from here) but is decidedly Feddie.

Some other ships for you to go over are on my site (generously hosted by Bernd):

Star Fleet Battles has a few nice designs smaller than the Connie, but not too many. The Grenadier Guards class is pretty good for a combatant for the period, and keeps a nice look (though the triple-nacelles annoy some). Kearsarge is popular, but may stray too far from what you're comforable with.

I may have to kill you if you do that.
:scream:

How about an original concept for the Enterprise? It was smaller by about 50% of a Constitution class. Here's my take on it. I tried to stay true to the original concept, though add details.

That is not too bad. :bolian: That is pretty much what I was thinking about. I saw on the comments that someone else did one similar but a 2D version...do you know anything about that? Do you have a list of specs for the ship you can post here?

I know I am asking alot. ;)

Thanks...

My measurements are extrapolated from the Jefferie's drawings where the saucer rim is 1 deck (and I've placed that rim at 3 metres high). I had to make an assumption about the rim height in order to get the rest of the dimensions.

The ship is about 100 metres long. The nacelles are 64.5 metres and 7.5 metres across. The Secondary Hull is 48 metres. The saucer is 48 metres across.

The m/am reactors are in each nacelle with power transfer stations in the secondary hull.

I had to take some liberties when adding the details since there was very little on the drawing to go from. But it fits and it works for me.

Oh yes, I’ve decided on the class and name for this ship. I’ve decided to call it a Confederation Class Spaceship. U.S.S. Atlantic. N.C.C.-802. Crew ? (under 200 but over 100); Maximum Speed: Warp Factor 7.76.

And here was a quick little cross section I made.

I am working on a TOS era story and I was looking for a ship and yours seems about perfect. I was looking at the bridge on your blog and it is smaller than the Enterprise on the show...which I am fond of. Great work. :bolian: Do you plan on doing a detailed 2D version also?

^thanks... The first bridge on the blog is more like TOS's. Then I scrapped that for another Jefferie's concept in The Art of Star Trek. I added some changes of course, but kept the overall clean lines and curves (that seem to have been incorporated into TMP in a lot of ways).

I can't recall the size of the bridge, and since I lost my old Google SU models, I can't even look it up. But I believe it was about 10 metres across, or 30 feet.

ARe you referring to 2D blueprint type drawings?

Yeah. 2D blueprints. I applaud those who do these type of renderings and stuff cause I tried to do something in paint in 2D and couldn't get it right.
