help my AVG found a trojan!

so yeah I just turned on my computer today & when I clicked on the IE browzer I got a pop-up saying it found a trojan horse root kit agent bv. So I moved it to the virus vailt. Now what I want to know is what am I supposed to do with it. Do I just leave it there? it gives me the option to empty the vault but should I do that? this is the first time Ive gotten one of these trojan things, AVG usually picks up tracking cookies & I just leave them stored in the vault. Ive read the help menu but honestly it just left me more confused.

so yes Im embarraased to admit I have AVG but I dont really know how to use it. Help?

I'm really not an expert at all, but I think the point of moving it to the vault is to give you a chance to restore it on the odd chance that removing it screws up your system worse. In case it's a necessary file or something. That's only a supposition, I don't know.

yeah, you can leave it there. It'll be safe. Or you can delete it.

Have you ever ran AVG in safe-mode?

update first, apply updates, restart, keep hitting F8, select "safe mode without networking" or simply "safe mode". There's a good chance it'll find stuff it can't find in normal mode. I mean, if you've got a trojan, chances are good you've got more stuff in there.

^ok Ill try that after I come back from some errands. Ill also run Spybot & Adaware since I havent run them lately. I hope I dont find any other nasty surprises.

ok I ran AVG in safe mode but in the results page, why did it give me a list of files that said they couldnt be tested b/c they were locked? I was using the administrator account too.

Look up the file name on google in a week or so. Some times when avg, avast, panda, ect. update you end up with false positives on completely harmless files. It's happened to me a bunch of times, where it decides some installation file for my sound card that hasn't changed for three years is suddenly a trojan. I look it up, and sure enough there are threads on the company message board with people with the same problem, and it turns out to be a false positive.

I just opened IE again & AVG picked up agent.bv again.
I couldnt find anything on Google or AVG forum on how to get rid of it permanently.
I really hate the internet sometimes...
