Help me start a war in Ukraine

I'm a wargamer and I plan to start a new scenario. This one will take place in the Ukraine between Russian forces and NATO.

I am trying to figure out how to get the scenario started. I know the Ukraine is not a member of NATO yet, but leaning that way. I also know Russia aint too keen on it joining NATO.

What could be a likely scenario for NATO and Russian forces to go at it in Ukraine? I was also going to include Belarus on the Russian side since they lean more toward them politically.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

A dustup over the custody of the technology and fuel contained at the shutdown Chernobyl plant.

Terrorists try to steal fuel from the plant or damage the containment over the damaged reactor. NATO acting for the greater good of Europe moves in to secure the site. Russia does not want it's "premier" nuclear technology falling into the hands of NATO (even though our stuff is *way* better.) Plus Russia wants its fuel back and not in the hands of NATO.

Are you nuts?! Have you seen Ukrainian women?! They are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen, taken as a whole. They have amazing grey/blue eyes. Just wow.

Please, start your war somewhere else!! :)

Dale Brown wrote a novel using this scenario called Chains of Command. Maybe you could borrow a few ideas from it.

Oh, I thought you were going to say he should start a war to [John Belushi voice] steal the women [/John Belushi voice].

A row over gas could work?

Russia once again shuts down the gas pipelines towards the Ukraine, thereby cutting off supplies towards Europe in the process. Europe is sick of freezing to death, so sends some "observers" to the border?

The Russians claim to have hotter female tennis players than the Ukrainians, leading to war. Things turn ugly at Wimbledon and NATO is drawn into the fray.

There was an article on BBC Radio four last week about how the EU hopes for Ukraine to become Europes major wheat producer. The Ukrainians aren't happy though about the fact that the profits that are being produced are all going to Western European/American Multi-nationals (who are currently buying up the land). Maybe you could work that it somehow.

The Ukraine is actually a rather divided country, with one part west-oriented, the other part leaning towards Russia. If I remember correctly, it's even a geographic East-West divide. One scenario could be the outbreak of a Civil War (maybe due to the Ukraine joining the NATO), in which the pro-Russian faction asks the Russians for help.
It's not very likely either, though, thankfully.

AMEN to that!

I'm actually planning a trip in a couple of months to Ukraine, so no wars there please!

Thanks for all the great ideals! I might work the civil war/oil angle. Perhaps both sides are fighting over control of the country with Russia intervening on "their" side and NATO moving in to support those who prefer the West. I'll also check out the novel, "Chains of Command"
Thanks again!

Russia has a treaty with Ukraine over black sea naval ports or something which is due to run out shortly. Russia is unlikely to be happy if the Ukraine does not renew the treaty so if the Ukraine was to refuse it would probably escalate tensions possible causing war.

I would suggest looking this information up because my memory on it is sketchy but i've got the basics right.

There's also this recent article which saw tensions rise.

I also found this.

You could base a scenario around Nato forces attempting to base in the Ukraine, leading to a war of words that grows "hot".
