Help Me Learn To Like Coffee

Aw, you don't need to learn to like coffee. If you don't like it, you don't like it, so why bother trying to make yourself like it? Me, I can't stand coffee. Or tea. Hell, even hot chocolate. I think I just don't like hot beverages, period. That's the way I am.

If you really feel like you need some sort of boost while at work, why not try a caffeine pill or something like that? I'd imagine it would have a similar effect.

Ignore those who would tell you to buy fancy coffee. Fancy coffee is nice, but you won't be able to appreciate it at this point.

Buy a coffee every day at 7-11. Pour a large amount of cream and sugar into it, I'd suggest 3 of each. If they have those flavoured creamers, even better. Try to think of it as a vaguely unpleasant hot chocolate.

Over the course of the next two weeks, gradually reduce the amount of sugar you add, aiming for zero by the end of this period. If you're using flavoured creamers, replace them with regular cream at the same pace.

Over the next week, phase in milk in place of cream. Phase the milk out after that and you'll be golden. You want to be drinking black coffee or straight espresso within 60 days. Just wait, it won't be long before you're asking the barista to top you up because you "don't need room for cream" :techman:

You too can develop an unhealthy addiction to caffeine!

I can't stand coffee. That's why they invented Coca Cola.

Funny fact: the term "morbid obesity" was coined 18 months after the introduction of Coca Cola :shifty:

I love coffee, but can't handle even the small amount of caffeine in decaf. Wish I could drink it and somehow transmit the caffeine to you. :-)

In answer to your question, though... you'll just have to experiment. I always drank coffee black (no cream/milk, no sugar, none of the fancy flavorings that are so popular today). But, like w/ anything else in life, just because I like a particular kind of coffee best doesn't mean somebody else will.

There's no point forcing yourself to like it. I hate coffee, and I've tried it numerous times over the years. The only benefit I ever get from it is acid reflux... oh wait, that's not a benefit. So yeah.

If you're looking for something strong with a lot of caffiene, see if you can find some Russian tea.

I can only suggest brands and types of Italian coffee, which could be seen as the "nuclear option" of coffee tasting (as one small cup of that has as much taste and caffeine as a couple of "American" coffee mugs), so I don't think I can be very helpful here.

But I live on the stuff, so I cannot help but recommend at least a try of Illy brand with half a teaspoon of sugar and no cream.

Honestly, if someone is trying to start out on coffee, Italian coffees are not something I'd recommend. They're very, very strong.

I was given little bits of coffee by my grandfather when I was very young, so I guess I've acquired the taste of coffee over a long, long period of time.

If it weren't for the cost, I'd recommend cappuccinos or lattes, since they're tasty and not overwhelming in coffee flavor.

I hate coffee, but there are three drinks at Starbucks that I find palatable and that you might enjoy as well - Caramel Macchiato, Iced White Chocolate Mocha, and Caramel Freeze.

I would recommend trying to get into tea though - it seems a lot easier a taste to "acquire" than coffee, plus there are so many different flavors of it to try.

I don't hate coffee. it's just that I only crave hot drinks in cold weather. Living in Florida basically rules that out for about 50 weeks out of the year.

Espresso is fun. I think of it as the "shot" of the coffee world. One gulp and it's gone with a nice caffeine buzz to follow.

I'm not old. :(

I'm just... seasoned. :p

Like a good salami.

Wait ... that came out wrong.

No, actually it's quite accurate. ;)

Oh my! You tease! ;)

Caffeine pill? Have you not seen that Saved By The Bell episode? I'm so excited! I'm so excited! I'm so ... scared!

Well, I thought I had successfully purged it from my memory before you went ahead and reminded me of it. Thanks a lot. :p

I'm good at doing that. :p

I really can't stand the stuff, but I want to start drinking it. Caffeine purposes, mostly. I tried once back in college but I couldn't cut it. I've had friends tell me that I just need to try the right coffee, but I have no idea what that is.

I bought something from Dunkin Donuts today and it tasted as vile as every other coffee I've had. It's now approximately 50% sugar by volume and I can barely tolerate it. I know it's an acquired taste, but I was wondering if there's anything specific I should be trying.

Any suggestions of where I should try coffee from, what types, etc would help. We have a coffee machine thing at home that I got for my husband but it uses those pods so I'm not sure what choices are available there.

I'm also a bit wary that I might not be able to tolerate something with an insanely high amount of caffeine, as I've sometimes gotten ill after drinking coffee out (especially from Borders).
It seems to me that you simply don't like coffee and should find an alternate caffeine delivery mechanism.

I like coffee just fine, but find that it's made better by a good helping (30% by volume, at least) of Baileys.

And there is another option. My son once bought me some Kopi Luwak, comes in a vacuum pack, can be made in an espresso machine or a French press. And it is not at all bitter. Very mild in fact:

BUT... sorry to say... your mind does dwell on its origins...

For all that, very recommended.

Yeah, especially if she wants to spend $50/pound on coffee that she might not even like.
I know what you mean! We first heard about it when a cafe in Townsville QLD was charging AU$50/ cup!

Son got 2 vacuum poacks for AU$30. A quick look on eBay sez you can get it direct from Indonesia for under AU$15 +P&P (I assume).

ETA: Actually, I think this is the one my son used, a US one:

Try it out! :)

Have you tried coffee-flavoured milk? That might be a starting point, then moving on to hot milk drinks like cappucinos and the like.
Nobody outside of Rhode Island should have to drink that. It's like ruining good coffee (or milk, depending on your perspective) with an additive. Much like how in New York they put ketchup in their clam chowder. ;)

^ Oh, I dunno. Aussie coffee-flavoured milk's half decent, and it's a good gateway to the heavier stuff. :D Go on, just one glass, you won't get hooked...

Wish I could help you but I can't stand it either...

... but I'm told I make a great cup of coffee.

The problem with coffee I found is that when I started using it to give me that extra boost for work I started to depend on it more and drink more. Now one cup a day isn't enough anymore. So in the long run it's not going ot be healthy. Same for Red Bulls which will make you crash later. If you could get power naps somewhere, it might help, or eat foods which can give you that kick for the long hall. Nothing heavy or else you'll be sleepy. Also drinking coffee at lunch time is gonna put you to sleep.

My advice would be to stop pulling long hours and get some sleep then.
Wow, life is so simple!
