Help Me Find an Episode?

Hello everyone,

I need some help finding an episode, and I was hoping someone here might he able to help me find it. For some background, I'm a college student currently taking a class about the way we perceive our environments. Recently we've been learning about phonemic restoration of speech, which is a phenomenon that allows people to understand missing portions of speech when it is replaced by white noise instead of silence. My professor mentioned that he once saw this demonstrated in an episode of Star Trek, but he could never find the episode it's from. I want to surprise him by finding the clip for him. However, I have little to no knowledge of Star Trek, so I need some help. This is where you come in.

As for the clip itself, I don't have much more information to offer. He described it as a scene where the crew has some kind of audio with parts cut out that they can't understand. Then, one person suggests that they fill the gaps in the audio with some noise and try listening to it again. After this, the crew is then able to understand what is being said. My professor is a middle-aged man, so I assume the episode in question is from The Next Generation, but I'm not sure.

Any and all information that could help me solve this puzzle would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!

I've just rewatched all the TNG episodes with a young friend who hadn't seen them, and there isn't an episode where that happens, specifically. Being middle-aged doesn't automatically mean TNG. It could be from TOS, the animated series, one of the movies, or any of the other series. His memory might be faulty and it could be from another science fiction show. I'm in the process of rewatching DS9 with the young friend, so if I see what your prof is talking about, I'll post again.

It could be Voyager's "Hope & Fear"(Season 4) They spend the episode trying piece back together a message, of which they are missing large parts of.

It aired in May, 1998.

there's a episode of ds9 where all of Kira's resistance friends are being killed off one by one and there's a garbled message that's threatening her saying "that's one" "that's two" and so on. Nog figures out whose voice it is by doing something similar to what you're saying. Could it be that one? I think it's called the darkness and the light.

Don't know the ep title (and it is a stretch to say this is what the prof remembers), but there is a DS9 ep (if memory serves) wherein the universal translator takes a while to decipher the aliens of the week's language. I recall Walter Koenig's son was a guest star.
