Hellboy II is gonna PWN Iron Man's ass!!!

As long as H2 avoids the NAZI villian cliche that kinda Sharked the firsted movie.

No Nazis or Rasputin; so far as I know. Check out the trailers and some of the interviews. This is a more overtly fantasy film than the first Hellboy.

How can you go wrong with Nazi villains? :D

I certainly thought the villains of Hellboy were great (having no previous exposure to any Hellboy stuff), although the girl could have been developed more, with her immortality and such.

Honestly - Iron Man will be the Spider Man of this summer - if not for Dark Knight, Iron Man would be the biggest superhero movie (hype, box office and reviews) of the summer.

Of course, we should ALL feel good about the fact that we have so many choices of superhero movie.

I am in complete agreement. Hellboy II looks like a far more interesting film to me than Iron Man. That Iron Man is getting more hype and attention is a tad perplexing; I suppose it's because he's a more popular character and there's a bigger promotion campaign or whatever.
Wishful thinking. Hellboy is cool, but the character doesn't hold a candle to Iron Man, and the latter just seems cooler both visually and storywise than the former.

I don't know about all that, but Iron Man will almost definitely rake in more cash.

I'm hoping to enjoy both films, though.

Wishful thinking.

Hardly. Rather, a difference of opinion. It would be wishful thinking if I said Hellboy II would make more money. That I think it'll be better is something else.

Hellboy is cool, but the character doesn't hold a candle to Iron Man, and the latter just seems cooler both visually and storywise than the former.

I'm not familiar with either character beyond the films; but visually the Hellboy II trailer seems considerably more impressive than the Iron Man trailer. That's doubtless inevitable; the Hellboy trailer features a wide variety of fantastically designed creatures, while all Iron Man showed us of interest was a solitary robosuit.

One can't judge the stories of each at this early stage; but I think at least the Hellboy II plot has the potential to be considerably more interesting than the plot of the original film (one of its more nagging problems).

Even though this is an insignificant matter, however I know it matters to some, but from what I've heard Iron Man won't have that much action -- a few action pieces, but short action pieces. Some of the complaints from the early reviews, aside from the musical score, seemed to be the length and sparseness of the action.

On the other hand, Hellboy II seems to have an abundance of action, and seemingly more visually spectacular. Again, not that it matters, but we all know that a lot of the criticism towards Superman Returns was the inherent lack of action, and a lot of big blockbusters like Transformers (which many people are comparing Iron Man to) strive on their crazy, intricate action set pieces.

Heck, to be honest, the action seemed far more spectacular in the last Dark Knight trailer -- lots of explosions, chase sequences, and heck, even a semi flipping over.

Then again, movies aren't judged by their action...

...right? ;)

I think Hellboy II is bound to do better then the first Hellboy. The sequel only got the greenlight because of how well the dvds sold and how well much it made the studios selling it to television. The fanbase has expanded.

Also I heard that for first Hellboy many theaters didn't show Hellboy 1 since they didn't want to offend the POTC... um... Passion of the Christ viewers. Obviously this won't be happening again since that Jesus movie likely won't be getting a sequel. ;)

Now don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Iron Man. He was easily my most favorite character in the MARVEL animated movie series, both in the two Ultimate Avenger flicks and the stand-alone film. And I'm sure the Robert Downy, Jr. film will be great, but I just saw the new Hellboy II trailer and it looks to be a much better and more exciting comic book/fantasy film than Iron Man is, or will be.

With del Torro's experience with Pan's Labyrinth, it looks like he has taken lessons learned from that film and applied them heavily to Hellboy II. Check out that new trailer, if you haven't already done so, and tell me I'm not right.

Yeah..you nailed this pretty good..

But in all seriousness...HELLBOY 2 was BORING..the first one was better, I think, because it was smaller. Bigger doesn't always mean better, Lucas has proved that OVER and OVER..

I just saw Hellboy 2 last night (Dec 22 2008)..its pretty bad when the next day the only scene I remember is them singing the Barry Manilow song...not a good sign

Wow, old post.

Yeah, Hellboy 2 was awful. Granted, I didn't like the first one very much either. They both put me to sleep.

I just realized I might be breaking the rules by posting in these old threads..I had nothing else to do but read old threads, and a few of them are pretty interesting and I didn't want to start a new one because it might seem, well, like I was stealing from this old one...

Oh well..If I get a warning I'll stop dredging up these 'GREATEST HITS"...

Not only was Hellboy 2 not even close to Iron man, it was one of the worst movies of the year.

One big problem with Hellboy II was the villain(s):

1. I found the main monster guy (you know, the one with the nifty mechanical hand) completely non-threatening. To me, he was more comic relief than anything...partly because he looked like a refugee from the Muppet Show. If that was intentional, so be it, but because of this, his fight with Hellboy didn't do much to ratchet up the film's intensity-level.

2. The main "elf" villain was too sympathetic. He was also kind of a whiny @%$&*...but that's another problem. There's nothing inherently wrong with sympathetic, complex, villains. But you've also got to have somebody to HATE in order to really care about whether the hero succeeds or not. It's sad maybe, but true...

3. The Golden Army effects looked cool. The battle looked cool, too. But the problem is we never SEE what they can DO. I mean, the movie talks about how they're invincible. They definitely look formidable when battling Hellboy and co. But you've gotta show, not tell. SHOW me how they perform against a modern army...SHOW me they would be resistant to a few well-placed, annihilating missile strikes and I'll buy that they're a major threat. Otherwise, don't expect me to get anxious over whether or not they're stopped by our heroes.

Anyways...just some thoughts...

:guffaw:

As the old saying goes: never make predictions; if you're right, no one will remember--and if you're wrong, no one will forget.

No problem here. You did resurrect an old thread, but you added something of substance to it. Your post wasn't just a bump for purposes of self-indulgence, so it's quite cool. In fact, I'm glad you did, because it's always interesting to see first-hand opinions before and after an event.

I wouldn't get in the habit of bring back too many of these though.

Thanks...I was up until 2AM and had to hold back on the REPLY button while reading these old threads..great stuff back there in the 'day'...

Well, as long as it's still here...

Hellboy II was my favorite movie of the summer, probably of the whole year. The whole thing was beautiful from start to finish. Every one of the creature designs was spectacular. The whole cast was great again, particularly Ron Perlman's Hellboy. The story itself was fairly simple, but I liked the ideas it presented, even if they weren't developed as far as they could have been. It wasn't a perfect movie, but I loved it in spite of its flaws.

But I also loved Iron Man, and I couldn't care less about who bested who at the box office. Granted, I'd like to see a Hellboy III, but Guillermo del Toro is booked for a solid decade with other films as it is, so I'm not holding my breath. Though he still seems to be very interested in returning to the series, and Hellboy II did apparently make a lot more money than the first one did, so we'll see.

I kind of liked Hellboy II while wasn't quite as much fun as the original movie it was still alot of fun.

Ireally enjoyed it myself. I thought it was an improvement on the first, and the scale they managed on the budget was fantastic. I did enjoy Iron Man more, probably because it was a surprise. I didn't know much about Iron Man, thought the trailers were probably full of everything worth watching in the movie, then I saw it and thought it was great.
