I apologise for what might be a stupid question but I was wondering about headphone microphone sets.
I've bought a microsoft headset and was wondering do I have use messenger with it? or can I use any chat software?.

I would guess it's just a headset that microsoft has plastered it's name on. I doubt it would limit you to particular software.

As far as I'm aware, they should look like generic sound I/O devices to most software including Skype.

I have a another question.
I am starting to play online games and have been advised to get 'vent' is this the same as ventrilo?.
if so it says about downlaoding client and server do i need both or will the client do?

Yes, "vent" is short for Ventrilo. You should just need the client. The people you're playing with will have a server setup for you to connect to.
