Yeah, nobody is losing sleep about it here in The Netherlands, except maybe his relatives...
His father died not that long ago. Who knows what secrets he took with him to his grave. And if I were his relative, I wouldn't be losing sleep over it either. But his daddy had his precious image to protect on his little island...yeesh.

I know a woman I'd LOVE to set him up on a date with: Archon Makbar. That's the date he REALLY deserves.
Sociopaths may be “sick,” but they're not insane, in the legal sense of the word. Someone like Charles Manson or Jeffrey Dahmer or this Joran van der Sloot dude knows what he's doing is wrong, but just doesn't give a shit. These people have no conscience and lack the basic human capacity to empathize with others. All they care about is satisfying their own twisted desires. In other words, they're simply EVIL BASTARDS.Can people help being sociopaths? I don't know much about the condition but if people are born this way are they to blame? I believe that sociopaths who /harm/kill should be locked away for the rest of their lives to protect society from them but I see no reason to inflict pain on them if they are 'wired wrong'.
http://www.personalityresearch.org/papers/jones.htmlCriminal behavior has always been a focus for psychologists due to the age old debate between nature and nurture. Is it the responsibility of an individual's genetic makeup that makes them a criminal or is it the environment in which they are raised that determines their outcome? Research has been conducted regarding this debate which has resulted in a conclusion that both genes and environment do play a role in the criminality of an individual. This evidence has been generated from a number of twin, family, and adoption studies as well as laboratory experiments. Furthermore, the research has stated that it is more often an interaction between genes and the environment that predicts criminal behavior. Having a genetic predisposition for criminal behavior does not determine the actions of an individual, but if they are exposed to the right environment, then their chances are greater for engaging in criminal or anti-social behavior. Therefore, this paper will examine the different functions that genetics and the environment play in the criminal behavior of individuals.
My point is - if they are born without the abilty to empathise, born without a conscience - is it their fault, even though they know that society will regard their actions as crime? Should we punish them both for their sickness and their crimes? Would you be happy to see them tortured?
In my country (and most Western countries) putting them to death isn't an option so all we have if "life imprisonment - never to be released". There is only one prisoner with this sentence in Tasmania.
That sound you hear is the line between real life and fiction being blurred. Makbar was a one-time guest Cardassian on DS9.And if I were his relative, I wouldn't be losing sleep over it either. But his daddy had his precious image to protect on his little island...yeesh.

I don't know who Archon Makbar is, but how about another suggestion-Lorena Bobbit.

Um, kind of a no-brainer. If the individual cannot effectively function as a part of society without harming other individuals, then the individual should be segregated from society. Period.

Life in prison is provided by tax dollars. Burns my ass the idea of giving these bastards free room and board on my coin. If the bleeding hearts want to take up a collection I'm fine with it otherwise take these bastards and bash their heads in with the heels of their own fucking boots.
This is true. Mental illness is as much beyond the control of the patient as diabetes or a cleft palate or any other medical condition. My view of that only a sick society wants to stoop to the same level of killers it despises.

What's horrifying is the allegedly sane people who use tragedies like this as an excuse to express their own lust for violence and death.
