HD Finally!

I'm quite terrified at how much a BD Doctor Who box set will cost, considering how ridiculously overpriced the DVD sets are (which I always pay every. friggin. time. because it's Doctor Who, dammit!).

Although Torchwood series 1 is about £45 now so I guess that's in line with the Who DVDs. Any word on Torchwood s2 coming out on the better (that's right) format?

Well nothing is certain until it's announced, but it probably depends on the quality of the current set. If the current set was built to be able to hold up to HD resolutions then they can just use it. If not then they have to redo the set. At that point they can either copy the existing design or create a new design. But once they're going through the cost/trouble of rebuilding the set might as well make it new.
Redoing the set for HD was actually probably done over this most recent hiatus; that was about a seven month break from filming, which is probably the longest break it's going to see until 2013. (Certainly, the next break in which there's time to make such changes wouldn't have been until after the 2010 season filmed, and that'll only be their normal 2-3 months.)

At the end of the day there's a limit to what the human eye can percieve, but you just know people will still sign up for superHD and UltraHD :D

I'm such a luddite!

I wish I could bring everyone who doesn't see much improvement in HD round to my house and have you watch my Blu-Ray of 'Baraka'* on my (properly set-up) 52" TV.

Admitedly Broadcast HD isn't up to that level yet but it'll get there in the end.

I've been very picky about picture quality over the years. Even in the 90s my cable system had a lot of static and poor signal quality, it did improve in the 2000s but anyone who says they can't tell the difference from standard and even 720i or p are simply just used to it. I've watched the two together, its no comparison. My HD-DVD is simply amazing, several levels above broadcast HD.

RAMA

I agree you would have to be blind to not notice the difference, even I know that, but alot of people are not sure the extra picture quality is worth the cost.

At this time I would normally add that HD content is slim on the ground as well, but that is changing, even the BBC is doing its bit to improve HD content

What do you mean "Even the BBC"? At the minute they're the main UK broadcasters with any HD content. ITV HD is pitiful in content, Channel 4 HD is mostly upscaled at the minute.

well in the past most of the HD content was US imports and some sport, now the BBC is making its own HD content.

HD content is slim on the ground

I don't know, most of the shows I watch now are in 720p, thanks to a Mr A. Zureus.
which is why I said

No, it's not changing. It has changed. ;)

Now, most scripted TV shows are being produced in HD, and of course, movies are hi-def by default - it's just now there are viable home platforms to deliver them at a decent resolution.

Hmm, I should do this more, but I'm not sure if media centre plays MKV files or not.

Apparently it's a pain in the arse on Media Centre, even if you install the codec/wrapper packs, the MCE interface is hardcoded to only see certain filetypes. That's as I understand it anyway, I could well be wrong.

Hmm, time to visit Green Button, me thinks.

OK, the codec pack I installed made MKVs work already. I should have tried before, rather than just assuming it wouldn't work.

^Is that with, or without my glasses on?
Talking of stuff that looks epic in HD, Nature's Great Events should look pretty fantastic tonight on BBC HD.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to D/L it though as I'm stuck with shitty SD blocky-as-fuck Freeview. I watched the recent Attenborough doc on Charles Darwin in 720p, filled with lots of archive footage from his other stuff, my god it was incredible. Pretty much sealed the deal for getting Planet Earth on bluray. :D

Wanna get Baraka now too thanks to StCoop. My eyes are grateful, my wife and wallet hate you.
