The Hollywood Reporter reports that the pilot episode of HBO's Game of Thrones (the TV adaptation of George R.R. Martin's fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire) will be directed by Tom McCarthy (director of the films The Station Agent and The Visitor). Further, it is now confirmed that Peter Dinklage will play Tyrion. The pilot is slated to film in the third quarter in Northern Ireland.

Unless the script gets a re-write, I'm still less than enthused about this project.

Dinklage is the obvious choice, but I was personally hoping for someone younger.
 
While you might find someone of a smaller stature, younger size, or just generally fits the physical description of Tyrion from the books better. I'd rather have someone who has shown they have a pretty good range when it comes to actual acting ability.

I said in one of the previous threads I think Tyrion's casting is the most important part in the show. He's such a significant character in the books and just putting in someone who's short and can't actually act or pull it off would just make the entire show look comical and unappealing to anyone other then perhaps hard-core fans of the books.
 
I have played the board game, but friends of mine that have read the books will be happy to hear this.

I have the pilot script, but haven't read it yet (I'm undecided on whether to read it before the pilot - hopefully - airs), but the Winter is Coming blogspot gave the script a very positive review, so I'm hoping for the best.

Dinklage is unquestionably talented, plus he has name recognition - which is always going to be a benefit for the lead actor of a new series. The only other candidate would be Michael J. Anderson (Samson from Carnivale), but he's 16 years older than Dinklage, who I guess is already a bit too old for the part?

I don't know anything about the book series, but I'm interested in the TV series just because of Dinklage.
 
Dinklage is very talented, and Tom McCarthy is a fine director. I don't know a thing about this property, but those two names alone (usually attached to less mainstream fare) have me interested.
 
I read the pilot script, it follows the book pretty closely. i'm not sure what exactly is "wrong" with it.

It has a very "Rome" style feel to it (as in, similar tone to the HBO show Rome)
 
Dinklage was obviously chosen because of his prior work with the director. It's not really surprising, since we know directors do this all the time. Honestly, it'd be more of a surprise if McCarthy didn't cast Dinklage.

Actually I think it was the other way around this time. Casting decisions for TV series are made by the producers, not by the pilot director. It's been rumored for months that Dinklage had been cast. He probably put in a good word for McCarthy to direct the pilot.
