HBO has given a series pickup to The Nevers, a new series from The Avengers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Joss Whedon. The pay cable network landed the project in a competitive situation, with Netflix said to be among those pursuing it.

Whedon is the writer, director, executive producer and showrunner of The Nevers, an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.

I hope it's better than Justice League...

I just asked mods to delete my duplicate thread.

Anyway, this is great news. A return to TV was what I was hoping for, but I thought he might go back to network because of the money. HBO is more than I'd hoped for. This show sounds like it really could end up right up there with Firefly or the Buffyverse shows in terms of quality. Looking forward with much anticipation.

After Whedon's diarrhea of the brain online and his claims by his ex-wife, which quite frankly I believe after said diarrhea of the brain, I've lost all interest in watching anything new by Whedon.
Agreed. Absolutely loved Firefly and Serenity. Cannot deny his artistic abilities.
But to watch him pat himself on the back for years as an advocate for women and then attempt to appear clever online by making creepy sexual jokes about teenage girls who survived cancer just because they took a picture with a politician with whom he disagreed was beyond crossing the line.

Nope. Done.

If this was on a channel that produced anything then violent borderline porn, I'd be at least willing to try it out. As it is, between HBO being like it is and the problems Whedon has been having, I'll be giving this a complete pass unless it gets almost universally positive reviews.

I understand why some may want to boycott this show, but to me being a shitty husband and cheating on your wife is a personal matter that has nothing to do with me. It would be different if he had hurt people like Spacey or Weinstein, but he hasn't done anything like that. I wouldn't want to invite the guy out for a drink after work, but enjoying and supporting his professional work is not a problem for me.

The premise sounds interesting, but more than a little cliche for Whedon. I'm cautiously optimistic about this. I hope we get more details soon.

Are The Nevers an original IP or is it a remake of something? If it's original my interest level will be much higher.

I haven't heard about any of that personal stuff for Whedon anyone is referring to, but I'm not interested. Separate art from the artist.

What did he do?

This is awesome news.

Now I can look forward to at least one new show on HBO that I know will be real good.

What did he do?

Slept around on his wife.

Now they're divorced, and she's pissed.

You know, circle of life.

I'd stand in line...

I hope Whedon is back to his best. Hollywood may have cost us an entire Whedon TV series or two, and I’m not sure it’s been worth the trade-off.

Not sure what to think of his now ex-wife’s allegations, especially since (going by Wikipedia) they’ve been separated since 2012; notably the year of release of both The Avengers and Much Ado About Nothing, the latter of which was filmed at the Whedon house (designed as it was by the then Mrs Whedon). It seems that his admitted workaholism may have been a factor in their split.

Agree. Being an aduterer is certainly a distasteful label, but there are other things that are SO much worse.

Anyway, I was a big fan of Penny Dreadful so I know how well a supernatural show set in the Victorian era can be. If The Nevers comes anywhere near it, I'll be very happy.

Another good thing about being on HBO is that he'll be given enough time to get it just the way he wants it before the show airs. He'll have money for the right actors and writers plus have the leeway to allow the characters and premise to develop. I hope the show has humor, but still maintains the gravitas to present credible drama.

I'm really excited about this.

I am kind of interested. I think I am getting tuckered out on Superhero shows to be honest. This might be the first show like that done on HBO and Whedon does have a proven track record so I assume it will be good but can't someone gives us some more spaceships and asshole mob/criminal types again? Also something truly unique. How about a show dealing with some kids trying to start a lemonade stand that is a metaphor for the rise and fall of mom and pop stores, or a show about a drug addict who runs a zoo?

Cheated on his wife their entire marriage, starting on thet set of Buffy and potentially involving people underage at the time.
I knew about the cheating allegations, but never heard about the underage part.
The cheating alone is an asshole move, but not really enough to dampen my enthusiasm for his work. It takes more serious stuff, like what Roman Polanski did, to turn me against someone completely.

Cheating on his wife certainly doesn't make me like him, but it's not illegal or bad enough to make me not be interested in his professional output.

Now, if he cheated with underage girls he had power over, that might be different.

His wifes article makes distictions between emotional cheating or inappropriate behaviour onset of his shows, and the more physical kind with others. He's an asshole, and creepy, but I doubt anything actually illegal happened.
