HBO orders "A Song of Ice and Fire" pilot

Given the extreme cost of Rome... which lingered on passable in some respects, I'm not sure I have high hopes of this lasting more than two years.
Hell, they couldn't even get Deadwood to last four years.

Hey now, he is only 2 years late on ADWD so far, after only like erm. . . 5 years between the last two, I think we can forgive him that. . . :: chews on his hand and looks shiftily around the room ::

I am beginning to worry though when he sets a personal deadline of July this year and we're still on radio silence at the end of the fall.

How would you all describe what the book is about, without spoilders?
It's a big soap opera type fantasy ( but with very little magic, or any at all, but some mention of dragons) that has a lot of characters but is still easy to keep up with.
Soap opera? This is an inaccurate description, IMO. Soap implies that it just meanders along book after book, but while GRRM has been taking his time lately (due to some creative difficulties - with the "gap" plan that had to be ditched), it is definitely going somewhere. There is a beginning, a middle (where we are now) and an end to this story, and GRRM knows at least the basic outline of how it will end. Comparison to soaps is unwarranted.

You know, I kind of get the feeling that once GRRM gets through these middle books, the series will end pretty quickly. He'd always intended to put a gap of a few years in the middle of the series, but then that didn't work out, and AFFC and ADWD have turned into filler books. I think he'll be able to churn out TWOW and ADOS a lot faster than he has the last two.

All in all, great news. I feel confident that the quality from HBO will do this excellent series a great deal of justice. *crossing fingers*

Cheers,

The biggest change I expect they may make in the adaptation is to make some of the characters a little older from the outset, particularly Sansa, Daenerys and Robb. I wouldn't be surprised if they're in their late teens, maybe even just over 20 in Robb's case, in the TV adaptation. Having them be as young as they are in the books could present problems, particularly in light of the adult situations they're put in - you can get away with more in a novel than you can in a live action production when it comes to depicting young people in sexual and/or violent situations. Even though such a depiction is true to life in a medieval society, putting it on screen would likely still be problematic.

I expect much bigger changes, like maybe relegating the entirety of Daenerys' story to the second season and beyond or bringning parts of her story from the second and the third book to the first season, because apart from few mentions, her story has no connections to the story in Westeros in The Game Of Thrones. Adding her chapters only from AGOT to the first season will require an entirely different sets, and to the casual viewer who is not familiar with the books it will look pointless ...

I can't see them doing that; in terms of balancing storylines it would probably cause more problems than it would solve, and I imagine HBO has enough faith in its audience that it'll trust them to figure out that the plot about conquering Westeros has some relevance to the plot about the king of Westeros.

Then let's hope I'm wrong. Dany's story is one of my favorites in the books ...

As much as it may turn out to be necessary for a few characters, I hope they don't age all the kids up the way you suggest OOMVM. For one, it lessens the impact of seeing them grow up in these trying times, dealing with these issues when kids these days are dealing with their first crush and football practice. You could cast 18-19 year olds that look young to play Robb and Jon and Dany, but they need to look young enough that we don't start thinking of them as the standard 20ish fantasy heroes or heroines. Marrying off an 18 year old has less of an impact than marrying off a 13 year old who simply has no way of dealing with it in an adult fashion because well, she isn't an adult.

I always tended to read most of the kids as a year or two older than they are, based in part on the fact that everyone is mature for their age(in some ways) and I conjectured early on that their passage of time might be a little funky. Robb growing a beard at 15 or whatever always struck me a little off. However, I really don't want to see "Dawson's Game of Thrones".

I adore the books and have always read the books with my "movie mind"... yet, the expense of bringing these books to the TV screen - I just don't see this lasting 6 to 7 series. Two possibly, which would leave the show on a big, epic finale but no conclusion.

Given Rome/Carnivale/Deadwood's experience with huge budgets Game... seems unlikely to last.

Yet, to see a truely adult, rich, textured and thematically grown-up fantasy series on TV would blow my mind - especially with this kind of pedigree, and with HBO behind it.

We shall see and cross fingers until they snap because, like the books, this could be legendary.

Hugo - Final scene of Episode 1... Bran flies

I think a fixed 3 or 4 year age up would work

Jon(book) I will be 15 my next name day almost a man grown
Jon(TV ) I will be 17/18 my next name day almost a man grown

that would make Jon/Robb/Dany 17/18 Sannsa 14/15 Arya 12/13 and so on some of thoses ages may be off
