Now that could have been a nice bit of casting although I can't see Shanks doing the unshaven grunge cop routine.Trivia: Michael Shanks auditioned for Danno.

Unwatchable. The desperate need for a bunch of "cops" unrestrained by budget (or law, or simple humanity?) to fight the terrorist menace is just too stupid to bear.
Theme song's still fantastic, though!![]()

My thought is, and I'm serious as heart attack about this, if you want to make a new show, then make a new show. Why do we need remakes/reboots? Either the new show can stand on it's own, or it can't. It doesn't need the names Hawaii 5-0 or McGarrett. If it's a good show, it's a good show.
I thought it was fun. I used to watch the original as a kid but it was sporadically. It just never caught on with me. It was too stiff and serious from what I remember. This version has more fun to it. I liked Jack Lord well enough but the guy was like granite. He really needed to loosen up some.

Well, like I said in one of my other posts in this thread, I'd rather have this than have another lame CSI show like CSI: Hawaii. Now that would have been generic. At least this has personality. And Sojourner mentioned the cinematography, which I'm thankful didn't degenerate into a lot of awkward cuts and camera shakes in order to make it 'edgy'.
Maybe this is a good opportunity for me to learn something. I mentioned previously that several posters who weren't fans of the original and they seem mostly to like this new version. So my question to those posters is this. What made you want to tune it to this new show and give it a try? What was the hook? Was it the title Hawaii 5-0 that drew you in? I'm genuinely curious about this, not looking for any arguments or fights.
It's a fair question. For me, I'm not really all that interested in all of the run of the mill cop shows, but Hawaii 5-0 was attractive due to the setting, and they've provided that with the beautiful scenery. That alone makes it fresh and interesting compared to all the urban grunge out there.
I agree that going from Commander in the armed forces to cop was contrived, but the opportunity to avenge your father's murder and run a no-holds-barred unit has its advantages. Then he finds out his father was chasing a mole in HPD, possibly the same one who ousted Kono, and knows that he is in it for the long haul to finish his father's work.
What I hope:
- that they continue referencing the cultural differences between Hawaiians and mainlanders (what was the term , "howways"?)

"Haole," I believe.
I was told years ago that it's usually used regarding whites and mainlanders. It can also be used more derogatorily, akin to "mainland asshole."

Agree 100% with this comment. I'm sick to death of urban grunge which was why I found Pushing Daisies to be such a breath of fresh air during its short run.
I know my personal proclivity is towards character-driven shows (should be obvious from the current batch of shows I DVR: Chuck, House, Big Bang Theory, Castle and now H5-0). If a show lacks likable characters who aren't cardboard cutouts and focuses on the procedural stuff (i.e., most CBS dreck as well as Law & Order), I usually find it really hard to enjoy. This show had good characters right out of the gate which was icing on the pretty Hawaii cake.
