I would entirely agree, Praetor. I had hoped that's how I would feel on seeing the new ship and disliking it. I hoped in motion it would work better. And it did.

Saying I hate the new ship design is putting it mildly. I think JJ and company completely dropped the ball with this poor selection. I don't know why anyone would change the original design of the ship when it's such a classic! JJ tweaked the uniforms and basically kept them the same, why he didn't do the same with the ship is beyond me. Yes I know it's so he can sell this new crappy design in toy stores, but really, did he have to choose this particular piece of garbage?!? I can't believe there weren't better versions floating around. Thanks JJ for giving us the worst design of the Enterprise ever.

She looks great loved it when i saw the first pic and in the film when she comes up from saturn,s ring my jaw dropped of my face .!!!!

I think it's butt-ugly. The neck is too far back, they pumped the nacelles full of steriods to make it look 'meaner', and the nacelles are too close together. There was something very graceful about the TOS and refit both; the refit, especially, looks like it descends from a lineage of sea-yachts. The new one just looks brutish.

Agreed. She's a clunky bitch.

We should do another poll. Out of all of the people who hate JJprise how many of you consider TOS Show Enterprise the best design. I would bet its over 90%.

We need a "tween" option in this poll. I started out hating the ship, but grew to somewhat like it as a design. Now that some official size specs have made their way past Abrams' "Specs and designs are what ruined Trek" mentality, it's a lot easier to understand the size of the nacelles, the thick neck, and etc.

But small praise aside, I still don't think it holds a candle to the original (especially when rendered by Vektor's skilled hand) or the refit versions.

I still LOL at people wanting/expecting them to replicate TOS era Sets and the Enterprise. Seriously, its not 1966 anymore, get over it.

My father was eleven years old in 1966. My love for the TOS ship has nothing to do with the year. I feel it's a timeless design.

The above render of the TOS Enterprise was done by our own forum member Vektor. Check out his thread:

...and tell me that ship wouldn't be suitable for a new production.

QFT :techman:

I still say it looks better moving than still.

I agree.
And I can't look at the refit any more without thinking: Damn, those nacelles are small! :D

[Kirk]"Thats exactly what i was goina say"[/Kirk]

As a static ship, its awful, i dont like it aprt from a few views here and there.

But to be honest, that ship is obviously designed to look graceful and perfect while moving. I loved it whil in motion, yet when standing still, it didnt have the same impact.

The best scenes for the movement are the one on Saturns moon Titan and the scene where it arrives in the middle of the Starfleet massacre and heads toward the Narada through the debris field, it lightly sways as if its a "leaf on the wind":).

Which is a strange visual metaphor given its gargantuan size. I liked the graceful and slower movements of the older designs (not Trek continuity, I mean real timeline), reminded me more of how big these ships are. Seeing a half-mile long ship maneuvering like a fighter jet just seemed off to me.

I submit that the reason the ship looks better in motion is that you don't get enough time to dwell on its ungainly lines. No, I still haven't warmed to this bizarre mix of design elements, and the recent revelations about its not quite determined size have only emphasized the idea that the person or persons in charge of art direction in this movie put down a few too many Red Bulls to be able to stand still long enough to think about what they were doing.

And yet ... I liked the movie.

AND ... I'd like to see a completely redesigned Enterprise if it was artistic and smart; as much as I love the original ship, I recognize its weaknesses. I'd even prefer tweaked improvement of the original along the lines of Vektor's work, or deg3D's. But JJ's effort is grotesque. It's like a baby with a grown man's nose and mustache -- you want to like it and tickle it under the chin, but there's a twisting in your gut every time you even think about putting your hand near such an abomination.

Kill it with fire. And lots of it.

Would you guys have hated it.,if this was the version for TMP back then ,i know alot of peoeple used to say the refit enterprise was to big looking ,and not as good looking as the classic .

No idea, really. That was a long time ago; this is right now. Perspective is going to be a bit different

I've never been all too enamored of the refit, anyway, but apparent size didn't have anything to do with it.

It took me a few days, but yes, she won me over and right quick, all things considered.

J.

I liked it better than any of the TOS ships from the begining. Not my favorite though, thats still the D.

I love this ship - and have since the beginning.

:bolian: It rates as my favorite, equal with the refit Enterprise, in terms of starship designs that I like.

None surpass it...

:)

The ONLY thing at this point I'd change externally is moving the nacelles a bit further apart.

Now the brewery...excuse me...Engineering...I continue to hate wholeheartedly and always will!
