Have you turned your A/C on yet?

Some parts of the country are starting to get on the warm side.

So, have you turned on your air-conditioner yet?

I haven't my place stays pretty cool due to facing, a wooded/shaded area beyond the facing and just the fact opening my windows and turning on the ceiling fan makes it pretty cozy in my place.

:)

My dad? Is fucking out of his mind.

I visit my parents yesterday to have dinner with them and watch Smallville with my mom (standing Thursday night plans) and after a while my dad starts whinging about how "hot" he is. (Mostly it's he sees "81" on a indoor thermometer and "feels hot" although the breeze caused by opened doors/windows and attic fan make it feel quite nice and "fresh."

So he closes up the house and turns on the cold, still, fake feel of the Air Conditioner.

Have you turned on the A/C yet? Or are you like me and prefer a natural air-breeze to the cold stillness of the A/C and know that when you get heavy into Summer you're likely going to be using it without much choice so might-as-well enjoy the fresh air while you can?

Nope, and I try not to. I work in a meat locker all day (A/C building), so when I get outside I literally thaw. I run the ceiling fans and leave the windows open all day and all night. I live in the sticks, but no shade for the house. 85' inside the house doesn't bother me one bit so long as there is air movement. My electric bill rarely goes above $35/month. Oh, and I live in Oklahoma.

Yeah, air movement makes all of the difference.

Which is why my mom and I were so miserable last night after dad turned on the A/C.

It feels so great in my place right now. Got the back door open, my main window open, ceiling fan on high. Ahhhh. :)

I forgot to say, I've had one year when I only had it on for two days, and another year where I broke down and ran it for two weeks. I grew up without A/C (Great Lakes region). Talk about muggy evenings.

Just a couple of times last week in the evening to cool the house down before my kids bed-time.

And today, we have snow and it's -3. This is a Saskatoon spring...

Nope, not yet. I don't find it's necessary until it gets to be in the high 90s outside. Anything lower than that and I just open all the windows. I can endure some pretty hot temperatures before I start to feel uncomfortable, but my boyfriend and family start wanting to use it when it gets in the 80s, so the apartment/house feels freezing to me.

Um, YEAH. For a few weeks now. It should be 90 today and has been in the upper 80s for a few weeks. That, and the fact that's it about 70% humidity most of the year, means the A/C (plus the ceiling fans) is on from March to October.

I'm in the middle of Arizona, and the temperatures are dancing around 100 degrees. You bet I'm using my A/C. I was actually sweating just driving back from lunch today.

Like a lot of people here in the UK of Englandshire, I have no A/C. I wish I did, though. The past couple of summers have been a pain in the arse because of the heat. So it'll be door and windows open, and the fan on full whack when that time arrives.

Not as good as A/C, though.

That's one of the side-benefits of moving to somewhere with greater extremes of temperature than England. Not only do we have A/C for the summer, but all houses have double-glazing as standard to help stay warm during the winter.

Yeah, that's the stuff!

:D

What she said, just with 45% less relative humidity.

Nope. We had a series of 90+ degree days back in April, but I have a strict rule about not even putting the AC in the window until at least Memorial Day unless I have some thin-blooded wimp from cold climes staying with me or something.

I live on the top floor of a West-facing brick rowhouse, with a black tar roof, so after about a week or so of really hot weather (and by "really hot" I mean 90+, not 80), I'll generally break down and turn it on so the cats don't die of heat stroke. Normally that happens by the second week of June. I try to put if off as long as possible because once the bastard goes on, my electric bill jumps from 30 to $100/month on average. This year, I'm getting a better AC unit though, so hopefully not quite as bad...

I don't have an air conditioner, and for the most part I don't mind it, since I tolerate the heat fairly well. I do miss it during the two weeks or so in the summer when it gets between 100 and 105 degrees (Fahrenheit, not Celsius...). I just open the windows and turn on the fans, and it's not too bad. Or I go spend the day in San Francisco where it's freezing year round. (Ah, Bay Area microclimates.)

I've had mine on once this year, when the temp exceeded 85F, but that's been it so far. I generally only need it a few days a year in July and August.

We've had ours on just recently, mostly to combat the humidity. If it were just the heat, I think we'd be fine without it for a while longer.
