HIjol here with a friendly word or 12 of advice to you, before it is too late to offer you any.

The way it works here is that we pick topics or respond to topics that interest us or that we are adept/expert in. We have writers and TV people and lifelong collectors and newbies and oldbies and everything in between. We bounce ideas off of each other and share our loves and likes and dislikes with each other. When we state facts, we support them with evidence.

May I suggest to you that you spend some time choosing threads and reading along with the posts without posting, just for a little while, so you get a feel for how it goes. I have made my share of mistakes here, so I know what I am talking about!

Oh, and I can guarantee that you will be hearing about your use of ellipses, and I mean that in a nice, humerous way. Please take my suggestions. This is a wonderful board to be associated with, and you will learn so much and share what you know and feel.

Because if there's one thing that just can not possibly be fit into the Star Trek universe, it's a starship running across a strange phenomenon and stopping to investigate it. Who do these people think we are?

That said, Star Trek is a religion for some, and to add to or take away from the holy books makes them angry, and they'll lash out at anyone who doesn't fully agree.

Fortunately, most people are reasonable, and while some folks may not like the Abrams films, they still understand that others do, and that liking or disliking them doesn't make them any less of a Trek fan, because it's all arbitrary anyway, when it comes to fandom. There is no such thing as a "true" fan.

That's why I always thought it was funny to watch people try to out-fan one another. It was an interesting thing to note that the person who would claim "only a true fan would know this" just so happened to possess that one requirement.

In all seriousness, I used to be an avid fan boy, part of fan groups that met on a weekly basis for some things, and have my fair share of Trek uniforms, props and the like.

Now, before any one misunderstands me, I have no problem with people who enjoy all of those aspects of Trek, nor do I consider such fans above me or beneath in fan society. Rather, I think we all enjoy our fandom in different ways, and we should respect those differences. Please note that respect does not mean agree with 100% of the time

I know I probably sound like a broken record from time to time, but I'm a big advocate of civil discussion, especially on this we disagree about. I happen to like Abrams Trek, but I understand while people don't. I like TOS, but my wife does not find it enjoyable. I would not call her "dumb" or what-have-you for not liking TOS but liking Abrams Trek. One's entertainment choices do not indicate one's intellectual abilities.

Beyond that, it makes me sad that I seem to derive some deeper enjoyment from Abrams Trek than others do. No, it doesn't make me superior but sad and confused, like I got to watch some film that others didn't. Maybe I got a bootlegged copy?

So, as a PSA, just remember that on the other side of the viewscreen is another person, with feelings and everything

Certainly, I agree with this. Fireproof[/i] and myself were just discussing the issue of being a "true fan" and how liking one type of Star Trek over the other, or eschewing some or all of it due to criteria like popularity just doesn't make sense, and doesn't make one a "better" fan than another. In essence, as Ovation stated earlier, you're a fan if you say you're a fan.
