Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

It wasn't all bad. It had the best giant robo/vehicle designs since Go-Busters, nice and simple with those aesthetically pleasing spherical cockpits that the Rangers were visible within. The music was pretty good (though it usually is). And I appreciate its ambition in building a whole alternate universe for a space-based series. But it really could've done with a smaller cast and more appealing characters.
My main issue with Kyuurangers are really trivial:
- They had 2x Red Rangers, WHY????? WTF????
- Lucky's Super Form is turning into the White Ranger, that's WAY TOO much of a coincidence to not be a MMPR reference
- HouOu Soldier should've been a different color
- White Ranger should've been it's own character or given to HouOu Soldier IMO.
- Koguma SkyBlue should've been the first Brown Ranger instead IMO, he's the little "Cub" of the team, so being the little Brown Cub Bear would've been appropriate IMO given that he's portrayed by a Child actor.

Apparently Yodonna's Changer is voiced by the same actor who played "J" on Go-Busters, so that must be why they had Matsumoto interacting with her, though that's a bit of a reach for a connection.
The seiyuu of "J" from Go-Busters is Yuuichi Nakamura who also voices Garuza.
So it was easy enough to get him to voice the Yodom Changer.

Having Matsumoto interact with her is probably a Easter Egg for us long time Super Sentai fans who remember GoBusters.

My main issue with Kyuurangers are really trivial:

I'll say. The color balance never matters much to me.

Timeranger had two Reds. Hurricaneger technically had two Reds and two Blues, albeit different shades.

I doubt that, since there's precedent for Sentai Whites being team leaders -- see Big One and NinjaWhite. Besides, Tommy went from Green Sixth to White Sixth, and only then to Red Ranger.

Besides, white is the combination of all colors, which I think was the idea behind Big One and is obviously the idea behind Zenkaiser. And there's the whole "white knight" thing, the figure of light.

- Lucky's Super Form is turning into the White Ranger, that's WAY TOO much of a coincidence to not be a MMPR reference

I doubt Toei would care about/remember something that happened 20 years ago for the American adaptation.

contrary to popular belief Sentai and PR's are not that close/in communication much

There has been some feedback from Power Rangers to Sentai. Megaranger felt like a response to MMPR in some ways, with a cast of high schoolers. And Go-Busters overtly borrowed elements from it like the terms "Megazord" and "It's morphin time." Plus there's Koichi Sakamoto moving from PR to toku, though he mostly does Kamen Rider these days.

Still, I agree that a White Ranger is unlikely to be a Tommy reference. The phrase "too much of a coincidence not to be a reference" is invalid, because coincidences in fiction happen constantly, so much so that they're hard to avoid. Art and fiction are based on meaningful and familiar patterns, images, and themes, so naturally different creative works tend to converge on a finite set of elements and parallels will inevitably arise, especially between different works in the same genre.

Also, both SS and PR have been running for a long time, with dozens of different shows. By this point, there's little that either franchise hasn't done within the formula of the genre. If two different things encompass almost every available possibility, then naturally they will have a lot of things in common just by statistical inevitability, with no deliberate reference required. Fire enough arrows at random and the occasional one will hit the bullseye without needing to be aimed.

Kikai-Sentai-Zenkaiger-1.jpg

The story of Zenkaiger will feature the hero ZenKaiser and his four robot followers uniting against a foe determined to erase all parallel worlds. The unique Sentai Gear will concentrate the powers of past Sentai to aid in combat and further transformations.

Staff sounds impressive. Shirakura as producer that's insane. Dude goes from not really doing much hands on for ten years to two shows in three, including a sentai, which is a huge rarity for him.

Zenkaiger’s head writer will be Junko Komura whose resume includes Dobutsu Sentai Zyuohger & Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger. Long-time Sentai veteran Shojiro Nakazawa will serve as the series’ director, while veteran suit actor Hirofumi Fukuzawa will take up the role of action director once again. The series will be produced by Shinichiro Shirakura, previously known for several Kamen Rider shows.

An official cast reveal for Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger is currently scheduled for January 15 2021! The series itself will begin on March 7 2021!

Episode 0 seems to translate to - Aircraft World Squadron Zenkaiger

Junko Komura as writer! That's great! I loved Zyuohger and especially LvP. I seem to recall she was initially rumored to be Kiramager's head writer, and while I like Arakawa's work, I was disappointed when she wasn't.

The premise sounds a lot like Kamen Rider Decade, which Shirakura also produced. And of course, Komura has experience with a series about a Ranger team with one human and four nonhumans.

Do you suppose we'll get a lot of classic-series guest stars like in Gokaiger and Zi-O? And I wonder if there will be a direct link to Gokaiger, given the very similar names.

So the robots only have the one form? They don't have a "civilian" form and a Ranger form, like Beet J. Stag did? I know the reports said they can at least grow giant, but it's going to be weird having only one lead with a henshin sequence.

It's possible they have a civilian mode that has not been revealed. Most of the media so far has been "in suit" pictures

Behind the scenes photo shows a different look to pink and yellow.

It would be pretty boring to just have one solo henshin in Sentai

This is the most "Kamen Rider" like Super Sentai yet.

We thought RedBuster with his Motorcycle was getting a little too close to Kamen Rider, having only one person Henshin would make it quite like Kamen Rider Den-O.

Even with only one henshin, I'm sure we'd still get a full team roll call before each battle. Although part of the fun of the roll calls is the season finales where we get to see the actors do it unmorphed or with their helmets off.

I'm still thinking we're getting civilian forms like Kyuranger for the suited characters. Right now they're showing off the "morphed" form" since it's the team look

It will likely go like this

Zenkaiger and the robots henshin. The robots get bulkier forms. The robots grow bigger to form the mecha

We're likely getting Komura's fantastic character writing in a faster-paced (or at least different) story framework.

The director Ninninger and did a lot of LuPat, and if there's anything Ninninger did right it was the creative and fast-paced fight scenes. This gives me hope that the fight scenes will actually be decent.

Looks like the gold thing on Magine's face isn't her nose but actually a streak of 'hair'. Miss America homage

I don't remember their stunt scenes much -- I mainly remember hating the overly CGI-heavy and absurd giant robo sequences. The plus side for me was largely the character work, some more than others. I especially liked Kasumi, who was utterly charming in her poise, wit, and genius. Although I hated the horrible, abusive grandfather they all revered so much. I also loved the gorgeous and imaginative designs on the principal monsters, like beautiful, fractured theatrical masks being worn by Lovecraftian horrors.

I didn't care much for Miss America or Battle Fever J. That's the one Sentai series I've started watching and not bothered to watch all the way through. For that matter, Magiranger wasn't a favorite either.

I see the robots have the numbers of their respective Sentai seasons emblazoned on their foreheads. They are really being unsubtle about this.

I assume there will be 40 other Gears, one for each series. I wonder if they'll all feature the giant robots -- although Gorenger and JAKQ didn't have any.

The mecha supposedly face each other like in the anime GaoGaiger for example

My prediction is that we'll see a green and black ranger join. Their colors can pay homage to Dragon Ceasar. When their two mecha combine it will look like a homage to dragon ceasar.

Look at yellow and red. Very similar in design

DX Zenkai Gattai ZenkaiOh JuraGaon Set: DX全界合体ゼンカイオージュラガオーン セット
Price- 6,800 yen
Releasing in- March

Description- Set of Red and Yellow ranger robot mecha. Each mecha has 2 modes. Red transforms from a T-Rex into a Daizyujin-like robot. Yellow transforms from a Lion into a GaoKing-like robot. The two then combine to form a ChouRyuJin-like robot named "ZenkaiOh JuraGaon." Can play sounds.

Those robot costumes seem awfully bulky for doing action scenes. The blue one especially looks like he's barely going to be able to move, unless that material is a lot more flexible than it looks.

They're the same kind of costumes they do the giant battles in anyway, though those generally aren't as acrobatic as the ground-level stuff.

Uh Oh. We have major leaks. Highlights

-We get another Navi type of character
-Civilian forms confirmed
-Half and Half combinations confirmed
-GearTlinger revealed( The morpher/changer)

Zyouhger reference. Lion get's dreadlocks in civilian form

-All the character info has been translated

ZenKaiser- Goshikida Kaito is a young man who wants to be #1 in any field, if doesn’t matter what. “He’s man who goes from 0 to 1.” Usually just a happy goof, if his switch is activated he becomes a “hot headed fool.” He considered everyone his friend and often
invades personal space. In any case, he rushes at everything with “Full Power Full Throttle”

ZenkaiJuran, “Juran” - Actually the oldest member of the team. He thinks of himself a as cool and reserved old man, but he’s actually an annoyingly stubborn Kikainoid. Even though he’s a mechanical lifeform, he’s bad at technology, and is a muscle-brained powered type. He’s a fierce friend and values his relationships, and hits it off immediately with Kaito. He loves parties and being the center of attention!

ZenkaiGaon “Gaon” - A “natural airhead” Kikainoid who is peaceful and considered humanity as just one among animal-kind. Conversely, he doesn’t get along with his own kind, and is rather cold to other mechanical life forms. His speciality is cooking. He is very diligent preparing meals for Kaito. Could it be perhaps it’s like feeding your pet? He’s a “my pace” kind of character.

ZenkaiVroon, “Vroon” - A serious “class president” type character. He loves learning but hasn’t had a chance to receive formal schooling & there’s a lot he doesn’t know. There’s a lot he is interested in knowing and sometimes his questions will be annoying or dark, unintentionally He loves cleanliness and his speciality is cleaning. He has a habit of falling in love with people (no matter their race.)

ZenkaiMagine, “Magine” - She considers herself reserved and shy, but at times she is actually quite brazen! She loves magic, the occult and non-scientific things. She becomes intensely obsessed with those things she loves, and is basically an otaku. As a mechanical life form, she sees humanity as “fantasy” and is incredibly interested in it. In contrast with Vroon, she is the type to never clean up!

Goshikida Isamu and Goshikida Mitsuko- Kaito’s parents. They’re professors who discovered the existence of parallel worlds, and are currently missing.

Goshikida Yatsude - Kaito’s grandmother who runs a sweets shop/cafe called “Colorful”. He lives with her.

Secchan - A mechanical bird that was left to Kaito by his parents. When the enemy invades, he suddenly starts talking!

Animal/vehicle form names for the Kikainoids- GaonLion, JuranTyranno, MaginDragon, VroonDump. Kikai Henkei is what it’s called when the robots shift to their mecha forms. ZenkaiOh JuraGaon, VrooMagine, ZenkaiOh JuraMagine ZenkaiOh VrooGaon

GearTlinger- A gun-type henshin device developed by Kaito’s parents. By setting SentaiGears “condensed versions of Super Sentai Powers” into it, you can transform into a Zenkaiger of that Sentai’s type (Robo combo only) Also allows ZenkaiJuran & the rest to grow giant & combine

SentaiGears (Gears used by the heroes)- Condensed versions of the “Super Sentai”who exist across the many parallel worlds. Allowing the Zenkaiger to transform, they can also be used to call on those Sentai’s powers.

KikaiTopia- Of the many parallel worlds that exist, it’s a world that is home to Mechanical Lifeforms known as “Kikainoids.” The majority of Kikainoids are beings of good, but the current rulers, the “Evil Dynasty Tojitendo” and rules them with fear and an iron fist.

KikaiTopia Dynasty Tojitendo- The organization who rules over KikaiTopia with an iron fist.

TojiruGears (Gears the villains use)- Using parallel world tech (misuse the tech Kaito’s parents created), worlds are “tojikometa” (locked up) & gears are created. TojiruGears can be set in the minions & call forth the power of those locked up worlds, summoning monsters from them.
