Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

Okay, it's up now, thanks.

Wow. That was unexpected.

There have been some short-lived Extra Rangers/Bangai Heroes before, but I can't think of any who were killed off a week after they joined the team. Well, MagiMother appeared to die in her first episode, but she got better.

And they really faked us out. They set up this whole redemption/team-joining thing, then started this out as such a goofy episode, and even did that bit about Nada figuring out what his henshin phrase was -- and then, bam. Pretty dramatic, I guess, but it cheapens it a bit to have it just be a way for Koh to get a new power-up.

Well, at least it explains why they didn't redesign the Gaisorg armor when he turned good. It was temporary anyway.

I've now made it through Episode 11, which is actually further into Dino Charge than I've ever gotten before, and I'm finding that Tyler and Shelby aren't as disagreeable as they have previously been.

I also find myself really liking both Prince Phillip and Sir Ivan despite only having seen one episode with them thus far.

Sorry for the double post, but I'm almost all the way through the first half of Dino Charge, and Tyler and Shelby have officially grown on me to the point that I actually like them now and would probably rank the DC cast thus far along my favorites in terms of overall likeability, which is not something I thought I would ever end up saying.

Zero-One episode 11

https://www.mp4upload.com/9lj6lmdtv3z2

It's bad enough Aruto has to deal with MetsubouJinrai now he has to deal with Zaia wanting to buy his company.

Not much Izu this week

Assassin is only getting more and more dangerous and Jin is having a hissy fit

Really cool fight with Horobi VS Zero-One. Horobi didn't even break a sweat(Can humagear sweat?)

I was interested in seeing how well Oowada could develop an actual actor bot. Instead, the writers have completely subverted my expectations, and put a bullet through Oowada before anything could happen.

Ryuusoulger episode 34

https://www.mp4upload.com/wbt07dt2q7if

Enter Pricious. Apparently Pricious is supposed to be a young boy because he use's boku and for the chessboard theme of the villains he's a knight

It's nice to see some continuity with Koh being depressed about Nada's death. Also Max Ryuusoul power-up got heavily depowered in one week if it can't beat Pricious but that's the nature of these things

Looks like we're starting a trials arc. Also they remembered ShineRaptor! Easy plot tool to fix the city.

A new Pokémon anime started and this looks a bit familiar

Might be a coincidence but a hilarious one at that!

Zero-One: Well, the Zaia president didn't really try to hide that he's somehow behind the attacks on Hiden. Which suggests he's working with MetsuboJinrai. I'd been assuming the basic status quo of Aruto trying to handle the presidency of HI would continue, but this episode made me reflect on how KR story arcs often evolve quite a bit over the season, so now I'm wondering if we'll see Aruto lose the company after all. Though if that happened, how would he keep getting new armor upgrades?

I love the way Aruto talked Oowada around on acting opposite Humagear -- that it's not about what the Humagear gives you, it's about what you put into it that it then reflects back. A nice bit of writing.

Horobi's move at the climax against the Mammoth was a nice touch. It's long been a standard KR trope (at least since Blade) that the henshin field/mechanism/whatever protects the Rider during transformation, and sometimes they do bits (here and occasionally in Sentai) of the henshin mechanism actually striking at the enemy briefly mid-transformation, but it rarely goes beyond that. But here, we not only had the grasshopper and the scorpion fighting each other at the start of the battle, but we even had Jin summoning the scorpion to protect him from Zero-One's finisher. I wonder if Aruto can learn how to do that.

So why is it that Jin can repeatedly reboot Ansatsu-chan from the backup memory in his Progrise Key, but Aruto always has to start destroyed Humagears over again from scratch? Maybe because he never recovers their Keys, since Jin (or in this case Yua) always steals them. Still, maybe HI should set up some kind of automatic cloud backup protocol for its Humagears so they're easier to restore.

Ryu: The subtitlers last week seemed to think Pricious was female, but I guess it turned out otherwise. Which has happened before, e.g. with Kyuemon on Ninninger (whose Ninja Steel counterpart actually was female, Madame Odius). Hmm... I'd been assuming "Pricious" was a play on "precious," but maybe it's "capricious"?

Anyway, I hope the bit with Koh saying "I'm not depressed, just thinking of ways to fight with Max Ryusoul" was just a cover for his real feelings. It'd be far too cursory a way to resolve that if it were true.

Space Dragon had a really eerie and disturbing roar. Really effective sound design -- that was chilling. Overall, though, the creature seemed to be modeled on SpaceGodzilla, what with the shoulder and head spines. Although apparently it's a reworking of the suit used for the mature Minusaur in the first episode.

I keep wondering -- is Japanese standup comedy really as lame as they show it in tokusatsu shows, or do the writers just like portraying it that way? I guess maybe since these are kids' shows, they feature the style of humor that's most suitable for kids, cheesy puns and goofy antics rather than anything more adult. But it's a bit ironic that the style of bad puns that were called "old man jokes" (or dad jokes, I guess) when Nossan did them in Kyoryuger is the same kind of comedy used by younger characters like Aruto in Zero-One or Canalo and Asuna here (though aren't they, like, thousands of years old or something?).

Three bits of posting points

Next month will show Kirameiger in the scans. First time the new sentai series has been silhouetted like this

yWaqUPp.jpg

Second point:

A reliable source who leaked Kamen Rider and dino information last year has posted some new information

-Sentai has been downgraded from A tier to B tier in marketing, with Ultraman being brought up to A tier
with Rider. There will be less focus on Sentai toys, and possibly a lower budget, and lower number of toys throughout the year.

This seems to have started with Lupinranger VS Patranger. Less collectibles and a decent amount of robos in Ryuusoulger

Maybe cheaper mecha to produce. The KishiRyu are actually fairly light, even though they’re sturdy. It keeps the price point down.

Less toys and collectibles might be a good thing, especially since it allows for a more concentrated story.

There's no immediate concern of cancellation or shorter seasons

This lower budget/less collectible trend might also mean it's preparing for an upcoming anniversary and they're scaling back

Third point. This weeks Beast Morpher clips. Actually these are from two months ago when they aired overseas but they are more clips so it's basically like watching the whole episode

"Rewriting History"

Vargoyle executes his plan to activate a device that erases the memory of everyone in Coral Harbor, including Devon, Ravi, Zoey, and Nate. Steel's memory cannot be affected since he is half robot. Vargoyle replaces the Rangers' memories with new ones, which includes Blaze being the Red Ranger and Roxy being the Yellow Ranger and never becoming evil avatars. With the Rangers forgetting their past, Vargoyle plans to break into Grid Battleforce and steal the Mega Transporters technology and use it to upload Evox into his own body.

It's up to Steel to get everyone to remember who they were

Zero-one episode 12

I thought the humor worked well for this episode. It wasn’t over the top. I thought the Vice President would do more acting out of Arturo’s gags but they kept it to just one

I got Spider-Man vibes with zero-one on the run from authorities and hanging out on the ledge

it was really good seeing Aruto clash with A.I.M.S. and the police while Metsubou deal with Dodo. It felt like a good chance to check in on everyone and we got to see more of Izu, Fuwa, and Yaiba's characters, which is always welcome.

It fun to see Assassin evolving from child to something with their own agenda

Ryuusoulger 35

It was fun to see Bamba share the eggs from his trial

There's not really any sense of accomplishment cause even after the trials they *still* need Red to come in and save all them. Plus once again new mech is Red/Gold only

I wonder if this is part of the downsizing trend that started last year

Japan households have limited space. A final mecha with just 3 components saves space

Having a cluster mecha is not practical anymore like G12 from go-onger

Zero-One: Interesting the way they just had Assasin-chan come back inexplicably for weeks on end and then suddenly revealed the answer to the mystery that hadn't even really been played up as a mystery. I assumed Horobi was just recreating him the same way Hiden did with its HumaGear, or else that Zaia was providing them. Turns out they're stolen Hiden models redesigned and obtained on the black market. And the fourth model has apparently leveled up and gone rogue, turning on MetsuboJinrai. That's unexpected. Indeed, I even got the vibe that maybe he's really a higher-level villain who's been hiding until now, but I'm not sure.

The detective HumaGear was a bit silly. But I noted the pun -- Izu and her "big brother" prototype Wazu. She Is and he Was. (I wonder, is he wearing the same deerstalker and cloak that Hikari wore as "Detective Kendama" in ToQger?)

Yua's doing some nastier stuff at her employer's bidding, siccing the authorities on Aruto and such. I hope it's not much longer before she decides enough is enough and makes a break with them.

A bit weird to end on the cliffhanger of a new armor reveal before we see what it can do.

Ryu: A bit uneven. The other Ryusoulgers' trials were kind of fun, although Melto's test turned out to be more a test of observation than of overcoming fear (though I guess fear could blind his perceptions). And Koh's was inconsistent -- first Set said he had to figure it out on his own, but then Master Red showed up and told him anyway.

The climactic battle was confusing and hard to follow, with all the sudden changes of location. Not to mention the sense of scale being way off when the Space Dragon smashed into the Moon. But that shot of the shadowed side of the Moon in the sky briefly being faintly visible from the light of the explosion was nicely subtle and effective. One rarely has a chance to praise subtlety in these sequences.

In typical Toei fashion, they hold off on showing us a power-up until the very, very end of the episode.

BTW. "When I shine, darkness fades." is an awesome phrase.

By the way, I find it interesting that Zero-One's helmet (along with some of the others, I think) breaks with the rigid helmet designs of the past and has more of a flexible, padded look. I've noticed how generally KRs have fairly heavy body armor while Sentai teams tend to be in lighter Spandex, only occasionally with heavier armor pieces for Sixth Rangers or power-up forms, though a couple of teams have had armor-like shoulder pads (e.g. the Patrangers), and the Go-Busters' suits were more like leather jackets. Anyway, Zero-One's Rider designs seem to be going for a more lightweight, flexible look than we got in the Heisei period.

It's nice to see that they gave Roxy's actress some tired eyes to show she's been asleep for awhile

I'm really glad I decided to give it another go at getting through Dino Charge because it's gotten consistently better episode by episode, and with just 6 episodes left, I need to sit down and figure out exactly where it lands on my list of Favorites.

I also have to say that the season is 100% a return to the style and level of storytelling that the franchise got to by the time Saban Entertainment was bought out by Disney, but done in a way that doesn't feel forced or like it's relying on nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia like Samurai and Megaforce (both of which I do like, to varying degrees) did at times.

While Dino Charge is easily the best of the Neo-Saban era, I wouldn't put it anywhere near the peak of the franchise in the Space-to-Time Force era. Its greatest asset is a fairly strong cast.

Having seen Kyoryuger now, I do wonder why they replaced Wise God Torin with the newly created Keeper character in much the same role, and then reused Torin's suit as a different character, Zenowing, in season 2. Of the two, Torin/Zenowing is a far more striking design.

The thing about Dino Charge Rangers being immortal and coming from different eras was an interesting addition. In Kyoryuger, the core team was all present-day people, but there were a couple of "Spirit Rangers" who were essentially ghosts, an idea that I think Toei borrowed from Power Rangers Jungle Fury. And Utsusemimaru/Kyoryu Gold had a similar origin to Prince Ivan, though he was from the relatively more recent past, a samurai from the Sengoku (Warring States) era.

I'm strictly a Power Rangers fan, so I judge a PR season by the strength of its story, how consistent it is with itself and the wider franchise, whether or not I like the characters, and whether or not I like the suit designs and Zords.

Based on those criteria, Dino Charge has been a very strong season that won me over and that, IMO, distilled everything that Haim Saban wanted the Saban Brands era of Power Rangers to be and channeled it by letting Chip do what he'd so successfully done with the franchise from 1998 to 2001.

Of the Saban Brands seasons, Dino Charge feels the most like it organically goes back to the franchise's roots but without sacrificing any of the lessons learned along the way.

I'm still not 100% sure exactly where I'm going to rank it, but if I think it finishes strong, there's a chance it could crack my Top 10.

Apologies for the double post, but I've finished Dino Charge and wanted to offer some final thoughts on it, specifically in regards to End of Extinction and the fandom controversy surrounding it.

Maybe it's the benefit of watching the season after-the-fact, but I personally don't see why so many longtime fans were dissatisfied with End of Extinction and its Days of Future Past-esque final act where our heroes have to go back in time to ultimately save their own future.

I personally thought it was clever to revisit the season premiere in a way by having the future Rangers defeat the past Sledge, Fury, Poisandra, and Wrench, even if it was a little bit Deus Ex Machina for the Energems' ultimate power to be time travel, and it actually creates an interesting plot twist for the Rangers' actions to have had such an impact on their future so as to have recreated their entire world.

It actually reminds me of the NBC series Timeless in a way.

The one question I do have is, with Koda having returned to his own time, how exactly Wes recruited him to help out the Ninja Steel Rangers and save the Multiverse, but that's really neither here nor there.

While I'm still unsure how I'll be ranking the season as a whole, I did want to share some individual favorite picks from it.

* Favorite Rangers: Kendall, Ivan, Prince Phillip

Favorite Villains: Sledge, Poisandra, Heckyl/Snide

* Favorite Episodes: End of Extinction, Powers from the Past, Past, Present and Fusion, One More Energem, Knight after Knights, The Silver Secret, Rise of a Ranger

Overall, I do think Dino Charge was a fun and interesting season that started strong and finished stronger, even though I was initially harder on it than I should've been.

Just letting people know. Bandai's yearly meeting with retailers/online shops will be occuring on Thursday December 6th(Wednesday night in America)

This is where they show off the 1st catalog for the new sentai behind closed doors so that retailers know how much to order etc etc

Anything can happen from Wednesday to next Monday if we're lucky

Magazines have already teased that we'll see the team at the end of next months issue

EKOYSBIW4AIzT1r.jpg:large

Even with just shadowed images there's alot of information already

-Shoulder pad armor
-Five member team
-The two most right sided members are standing apart. Could be a Go-onger/RPM setup

And the helmets have pointy ears or something. Another cat-themed Sentai? Or maybe they and the shoulder pads represent wings?

When I posted the other day about how Kamen Rider's first Reiwa-era series is going for lighter armor than the Heisei Riders, I was tempted to wonder if Super Sentai would go the other way and start giving Rangers heavier armor. From those silhouettes, it looks like maybe they are.

After having watched Dino Charge, I've sat down to re-evaluate my Favorite Seasons rankings, and here's how things stand right now (with Ninja Steel and Beast Morphers being the two seasons I've yet to see):
1. RPM
2. Ninja Storm
3. Time Force
4. Lost Galaxy
5. In Space
6. Mystic Force
7. Dino Charge
8. Wild Force
9. Samurai
10. Jungle Fury
11. Operation Overdrive
12. Turbo
13. Zeo
14. Megaforce
15. MMPR
16. Lightspeed Rescue
17. Dino Thunder
18. SPD

Note: I chose to rank the 3 seasons of MMPR as a whole in keeping with my decision to rank Super Samurai, Super Megaforce, and Dino Supercharge as part of a whole with Samurai, Megaforce, and Dino Charge

Gao!!!

Gaoranger is returning to South Korea for the 2nd time. The first time was in 2010 under the name "Power Rangers Jungle Force".

It replaced Shinkenger in 2010 since Korea thought Shinkenger was too Japanese to air for the Korean Market

https://news.tokunation.com/2019/12...ers-jungle-force-returns-to-south-korea-64523

The DX toys are also set to be rereleased. Some might find the prices easier to manage than ebay prices.
