Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

Kamen Rider Zi-O episode 37
...
Much better than the Kiva tribute.

Yeah, it actually felt connected to Kabuto, though mainly just to the Hoppers, whom I never liked much. But also through the stylistic touches like the emphasis on Tokyo Tower, the music cue when Gatack appeared, Woz doing Kabuto's raised-finger gesture, etc. Although it would've been more appropriate if they'd referred to Kagami as Masked Rider Gatack instead of Kamen Rider Gatack, because they used the full English version in that season. (The heavier armored "cocoon" form being Masked Form and the lighter, Clock Up-capable form underneath being Rider Form.)

Kagami, though, is one of a few returning Riders who've gotten much more serious with age, like Kido Shinji and Todoroki. Kagami was Kabuto's comic relief, the sympathetic doofus who balanced the arrogant, hypercapable Kabuto in a sort of Holmes-Watson relationship. There's no sign of that here.

Meanwhile, something weird is going on with the timelines. Kagami and the Zi-O gang have conflicting memories about the condition of Shibuya. KR continuity has always been a mess ever since Phase 2 started treating the formerly self-contained series as part of a shared history, but it seems that they're finally flirting with confronting that fact and justifying the timeline changes in the narrative. We'll see how far they take it.

I'm glad they at least tried to explain Ginga's random appearance. He came due to the meteors coming. It's weak but alright.

That seemed like just a speculation rather than a proven explanation. Maybe it's the other way around -- he drew the Worms in his wake. Anyway, it still seems that Ginga's powers are reminiscent of Meteor from Fourze, right down to using miniature planets as weapons (and the costume being partly based on Meteor's). So I wonder if we'll find out that there's a connection to the Astroswitches and the cosmic being that the villain in Fourze was trying to contact.

Tsukuyomi' s role is finally emerging. Kamen Rider loves to put their main actress at the center of the entire shows conflict or premise. I guess otherwise they wouldn't really have a purpose. Some of the main female roles have been supporters/cheerleaders like Akari in "Kamen Rider Ghost"

I really wish they'd at least have a female Secondary Rider as a regular once in a while. The one nearly regular female Rider we've ever had was Marika from Gaim, and she was mostly a villain and just one of a veritable horde of Rider characters.

Ryuusoulger episode 11

This was pretty good. I don't think I've ever seen a Sentai giant robot get so much personality and character exploration. It was sort of a variation on the Riddle of the Sphinx, but with a more sympathetic riddler. It was an interesting twist on the storytelling. We didn't even get a giant Minusaur this week (though I think it got away, so maybe it'll be back next week and we'll find out who its host is).

I gotta say, it seems unwise to debut a flame-based power when trying to save a kid from a pile of gunpowder. I guess the idea was that the armor not only generated flame but protected from it, but still, it's the first part that seems ill-considered there.

They seem to like their "quiz" characters this year, between Kamen Rider Quiz and this guy. On a side note, it's interesting to hear how Japanese appropriates English words and uses them in different ways than we do. Like saying "quiz" when we'd probably say "riddle." Or the odd way that "pinch" has been adopted as a loan word for a crisis or difficult situation. I mean, we say "in a pinch" too, but as an occasional slang term, not the default word for that concept.

I mean, he literally knows where the Ryusoulger's base is from when he masqueraded as one of the sisters, and he hasn't acted on that? He knows they are friends with Ui and Tatsui, and he hasn't kidnapped them yet? Etc. There's so much potential and they're just really lazy writing for him.

That's pretty common in these shows, isn't it? The villains often seem to know the heroes' identities and surveil them in their everyday life, yet somehow don't attack them in their sleep or something. (One exception being Megaranger -- when the villains discovered their identities near the end of the season, their homes were immediately attacked, their families had to go into protective custody, and they got kicked out of school because it was too dangerous to have them around.)

Kamen Rider Zi-O episode 38
https://www.mp4upload.com/5d7d33zf4u4z

It was nice to have Sougo take a break from the main story of the tribute Rider for once.

Geiz's ringtone is Revive's standby music? That was a regular phone so he had to have recorded it himself and then set it as such, which is amazing to imagine.

Yaguruma and Kageyama's relationship apparently reminds Geiz of himself and Sougo

What a jarring way to return from the CM break. I thought something was missing after Woz Ginga and Zi-O entered the meteor. They just decided to drop in an insert song right after the commercial break

The 360 transformation scene was great though

After 13 years Kagami gets to be Kabuto. Although he should have become Kabuto on his own. Having Sougo say a few lines kind of cheapens things. Kagami was a pretty strong willed character.

Everyone was rooting for him in 2006 to be Kabuto at some point. He at least got to be Gatack.

Ryuusoulger episode 12

https://www.mp4upload.com/t3uw34ithuh8

The "fight against the illusions" plotline did have its share of silliness, but it was worth it to see DimeVolcano in action. Those are some really nice practical fire effects.

Well this episode won't be used or it will be heavily edited if Power Rangers gets it just because of the mecha battle lol. Very rare we get the actual cast standing around the fake city set.

Also Gaisorg return! Now who's under the armor this time?

Zi-O: Weird how cursory the treatment of the timeline issue was here. Apparently, sometime between last week and this, everyone just figured out or accepted that Kabuto took place in an alternate timeline that was somehow being merged with the current one. And they theorized that the Timejackers wanted to merge them, but the TJs actually wanted to stop the asteroid.

Anyway, it's interesting that the post-apocalyptic scenario the Hoppers wanted to create was basically that of the Kabuto movie -- which ended with its alternate Kabuto going back in time and essentially creating the timeline of the show (well, almost). Still, I wish it hadn't been the Hoppers they brought back -- their nihilistic "We suck" attitude was so annoying. But then, Drake and Sasword were pretty annoying too. Tendou and Kagami were just about the only non-annoying Kabuto Riders.

Speaking of Tendou, it wasn't quite accurate of Kagami to say that he never said anything as arrogant as wanting to be king. After all, his catchphrase (which was a wordplay on his name) was "I am the man who will walk the path of Heaven and rule over everything." Sure sounds like a king to me.

Tsukuyomi's trip to the future with Decade was surprisingly lacking in revelations. All she learned was that she had a big brother, that we (but not she) learned was Schwartz.

The 360 transformation scene was great though

Yeah, that was impressive. Although sometimes I wonder why it is that all these Kamen Riders that apparently get their powers from completely unrelated origins nonetheless all end up using "Henshin" as their activation word. Plus most of them somehow independently end up calling themselves Kamen Riders (or Masked Riders or Armored Riders).

And Den-Liner sanjou! Sougo recognized the sound of its horn, so I guess that confirms that the Generations movie is canon to the series (which they usually are these days).

Ryuusoulger: This was okay, but a bit below par for this show, I'd say. Too many things going on at once and handled cursorily. Tyramigo's jealousy, the firefighter, Creon's growing disaffection with Wiseru, the appearance of Gaisorg at the end. And some things didn't add up. Why were they able to disperse the steam once but not again? Can the Ryuusouls only be used once per session, as it were? And how was the Minusaur able to mimic Ui so accurately? Does it draw the illusions from its victims' minds?

Having the actors as "giants" interacting with the robots was a nice variation on the formula, though. And it was amusing and slightly meta when the bad guys were monologuing in their usual spot and the Ryuusoulgers just suddenly found them and threw them off their groove.

Gaisorg may be back, but its behavior seems different. In Strongest Battle, the Gaisorg armor was driven to fight until it found the strongest opponent to take over. Here, it -- or whoever's wearing it -- seems to have a more nuanced and devious agenda, patiently playing a long game. Either its current wearer is powerful enough to override its will and subsume it to its own... or this is just the usual lack of continuity between series.

I wish that Power Rangers's music were remotely as good as Super Sentai's. Go-Busters had one of my all-time favorite tokusatsu scores, and one of the few SS or Kamen Rider theme songs I actually like. Beast Morphers's theme, by contrast, is possibly the worst Power Rangers theme I've ever heard, and its incidental music is nothing to write home about.

Zi-O episode 39
https://www.mp4upload.com/j3uzkyncfsan

Right off the bat we get Grand Zi-O's introduction(which officially isn't till the 23rd) but's actually a quick glimpse into the future

It also feels like we jumped right back to 2007 with the Imagin gang's antics. Junichiro's side adventure,Ryutaro possession and Geiz/Momotaro possession. I noticed Tsukyomi also showing Geiz/Momotaro how to use the Ziku driver was like Hana showing Ryotaro how to use the drive

I'm glad they brought up the Kiriya/Yuuto comparison lol.

I also just learned that summer movie will also serve as the long-awaited tribute to Kamen Rider Drive– the last Heisei Rider awaiting a tribute from this anniversary series.

https://news.tokunation.com/2019/06...eturn-in-kamen-rider-zi-o-over-quartzer-61113

Pro's and Con's of this

Pro-It save two episodes they need to finish up Zi-O's main story
Con- We likely won't see Drive's tribute till the movie gets released months later

Con- The week after the movie is released the show will probably do a quick recap of what happened and then move on. Similar to a few summer movies like Den-o's first summer movie

Ryuusoulger episode 13
https://www.mp4upload.com/wdc695tt3i5o

Why does everyone want to die in this series? lol

After 13 episodes the Druidon are finally looking for a lair. Somehow I find that funny.

I wonder if the prime minister will be returning for future appearance or if the ending implies she's just returning to a RyuuSoul tribe after 300 years of human living

Towa and Banba got some more of their backstory revealed, and Gaisorg is becoming less of a one dimensional character

It's also amusing that the show remains consistent - Asuna's effective clumsiness was not merely a one-off gag, but it continues on. It's also not necessarily a negative for her.

I'm glad that DimeVolcano got some screentime. Usually after the debut of something a special mecha just gets used like a tool to come in and then leave.

Zi-O: Cool to see the Taros again, but where's Naomi? Rina Akiyama was wasted in her Agito-tribute appearance, so it would've been nice to see her come back here. Also, clearly they're not acknowledging the Generations movie, since Sougo is acting like he never met the Imagin before.

It was fun to see Tsukuyomi doing the henshin for Momo/Geiz. I can only think of a couple of times that we've seen someone else activate a Rider's henshin -- it happened on OOO once when Eiji was incapacitated, for instance. Still, it's weird that Momo/Geiz didn't just become Den-O, because that's the best way to beat Another Den-O. But I guess if the Den-O watch was already created, that means the Den-O power is no longer available in its original form.

Man, Junichiro takes everything in stride, doesn't he? I keep thinking there's more to him than he lets on.

Judging from the ending, it looks like Sougo's already got the Drive watch. But IIRC, Geiz already had the Drive and Ghost watches when he first arrived, because he stole them from Oma Zi-O. So that's a bit of a plot hole, since now they're talking as if Sougo didn't have access to it. If that were the case, it would imply that the summer movie is set before this episode.

And it turns out Grand Zi-O's power is the same as Diend's, or Decade's upgrade form -- to summon avatars of past Riders (or the actual Riders, somehow) to fight for/alongside them. I like how the armor has the little sculptures of the past Riders posed with their trademark gestures -- Kuuga's thumbs-up, Build's antenna stroke, etc.

I noticed Tsukyomi also showing Geiz/Momotaro how to use the Ziku driver was like Hana showing Ryotaro how to use the drive

Oh, I guess that's another example, then.

Disappointing. I really wanted Shinnosuke to return -- he's one of my favorite Riders. And I dislike Gou/Mach. He's annoying.

But if they're bringing back Mach and Krim, at least that suggests it'll be more of a proper tribute rather than the token tributes we got to Kuuga and W in the previous movie.

Ryuusoulger: Pretty good drama, even if the "immortal who wants to die" plot has been done to death, pun intended. I liked how the truth spell worked positively for Tyramigo and DimeVolcano -- it's so weird for the giant mecha to be actual characters.

And it was clever how they used Asuna's freakish accidental good luck to get around the monster's mind-reading.

After 13 episodes the Druidon are finally looking for a lair. Somehow I find that funny.

Yeah, usually they have their own ancient castles or giant spaceships or whatever. Shopping for real estate must be tricky when you're an evil monster bent on world conquest.

Towa and Banba got some more of their backstory revealed, and Gaisorg is becoming less of a one dimensional character

Easy prediction: Gaisorg will turn out to be their mysteriously disappeared Master.

An evil so powerful that not even super sentai and kamen rider can't beat

I think I linked to this a while ago, a playlist of incidental music from Kamen Rider Build, Lupinranger VS Patranger, and other tokusatsu soundtracks:

https://soundcloud.com/zekozimo-storage/sets

It's been updated with more cues, including a second set from LvP that uses most of the same track numbers as the previous set (lower on the list), but they're totally different cues, presumably track numbers from a second album. I'm glad they added it, because now the soulful/dramatic arrangement of the Lupinranger theme (track 12 on the first album, currently #29 on the playlist) is no longer missing its counterpart, the equivalent arrangement of the Patranger theme (track 16 on the newer album, currently #13 on the playlist).

It's also got four cues that are listed as being from Heisei Generations Forever, but they're just some of the standard Kamen Rider Zi-O cues. My favorite is track #18 (Generations Forever Soundtrack 37), which is Woz's "Rejoice!" fanfare cue followed by the usual fight music.

It's interesting how many different genres of music tokusatsu scores draw on. A number of my favorites are jazz-based, like LvP with its cops-and-robbers theme, Go-Busters with its spy theme, and Kamen Rider W with its noir-detective theme. Kamen Rider Ghost seems to be based in Chinese or Tibetan music, I think, fitting for a show based at a Buddhist monastery, although there are some rock and rap elements in it as well. Kamen Rider Gaim has a style that I'd imagine is based in Sengoku-era Japanese music, fitting its storyline. But sometimes it's harder to understand why they chose a particular style. Kamen Rider Decade's music had a flamenco influence for reasons that elude me, and Zi-O's music is in an Indian style, which is nice but similarly mysterious. (Maybe because Hindu culture has an elaborate calendar and a sense of infinite cycles of time?)

The collectible item of the series looks to be rectangle shaped. Could be anything. Micro SD cards? Data cards? There's even talk about it just being business cards.

The last time they showed any detailed silhouette was Build. I guess they're being more secretive nowadays as there have been leaks in the past

That'd be sort of back to basics, since the first collectible items in the franchise's history were the Advent Cards in Ryuki. Since then, we've also had the playing card/Tarot-based Rouze Cards in Blade, the card-like train tickets in Den-O, and the Rider Cards in Decade. Although if they are data cards, it'd be more along the lines of 555's Mission Memory card keys, W's USB-stick Gaia Memories, or Ex-Aid's gaming-cartridge Gashats.

By the way, I recently watched the '70s Logan's Run TV series on DVD, and there was an episode where a character mentioned that grasshoppers were incredibly resilient and could survive the worst apocalypse -- which was the same rationale used in the '90s gritty-reboot movie Shin Kamen Rider (which I found on YouTube recently) for why the mad scientist in the film created grasshopper-human hybrid mutants (the dark'n'gritty equivalent of the original franchise's grasshopper-armored cyborgs). These days we always hear people say it's cockroaches that would be the ultimate survivors, so I'm surprised to see two such separate things both say it was grasshoppers. Given that the original Kamen Rider also originated in the '70s, I wonder if the idea was current back then, and if that's why Ishinomori chose a grasshopper motif in the first place.

Yeah Shin kamen rider was slightly influenced by the 80s remake of the movie “the fly”

Not gory but disturbing

I can't say I liked it much. It made a decent attempt to build characters and had pretty good creature effects, but it was too great a departure from Kamen Rider, it took the female lead to a bizarre and unpleasant place, and conceptually it kinda went off the rails in the final act.

The other two '90s movies are also on YouTube. Kamen Rider ZO is like a more kid-friendly attempt to do the same basic premise as Shin -- the hero as the creation of a mad scientist's experiments battling his sibling creations -- but because it's half as long, it's far more superficial and fails to be engaging. There's too much action before the characters and premise are even adequately established, so there's no reason to care about it.

As for Kamen Rider J, it's the most conventional and yet the most effective, or at least has the fewest problems. It's more of an alien invasion story with J empowered by chthonic beings to defend the Earth, and it has some effective monster suits, especially the crocodile-like monster that J fights first (named Agito, bizarrely enough). Mainly it's notable for the fact that J turns giant at the end like Ultraman, fighting the alien base/ship directly. Of all of them, it's the only one that I think could've worked as the pilot for a new series.

Another drawing. Business man with a attaché/sword?

rQAwJBo.jpg

Weird, if true. But at least it'd be a bit less garish than the past few Riders. I'm slightly reminded of Wizard, with his classy trenchcoat look, though the color scheme is evocative of Agito.

A thought: What if it's not a business suit, but a Japanese school uniform? Some of those feature dress shirts, coats, and ties. Maybe it's another school-based Rider like Fourze.

I realized awhile back that Saban's Masked Rider cut and pasted in Kamen Rider ZO footage in the early episodes. The most widely known budget saving method was having Dex dress up as Minami Kohtaro ( Kamen Rider black RX)

Also looks like most of the 2017 Power Rangers team are doing pretty well post 2017 movie

Naomi Scott was just in "Aladdin"
Dacre Montgomery is in "Stranger Things"
Becky G has a singing career
RJ Cyler is in CW's "Black Lightning"

And now Ludi lin (Zack in the 2017 movie) is one of the top contenders for Marvel's "Shang-Chi"

https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/0...movie-donnie-yen-casting-ludi-lin-ross-butler

I liked the 2017 cast and movie* a lot and hope they'd be in a new movie as well.

*except the hideous suit/zord designs and not enough fight actions as Rangers.

Becky G was already a singer before the movie, so I'm not really sure if that counts.

They are doing a sale on the Might Morphin' Power Rangers digital comics from now until the 7th, if anybody interested.

What do you think is the chance that KyuRanger is being adapted after the current Power Ranger series?

If Hasbro fills in the gaps in sequence, then ToQger would be next, then Zyuohger, then Kyuranger. I think I read that Hasbro was fine with doing all the seasons that Neo-Saban skipped.
