Hasbro's Power Rangers era and General Tokusatsu discussion

Oh, I didn't know that.

Yeah, don't use it unless someone specifically identifies as the term. It's typically used to correlate cis male crossdressers with trans women. We're not the same thing, after all.

Still looking forward to the day we get someone who identifies as a femboy in mainstream media, though...!!

Oh, I knew that, of course. The distinction seems obvious to me; you'd have to be really ignorant to confuse the two. (According to my college Human Sexuality textbooks, the majority of crossdressers are heterosexual as well as cismale; it's more about cultural gender roles and the freedom to set aside restrictive standards of masculinity than about sexuality per se. At least, that was the understanding back in the '90s and '00s.) I'm just surprised the term has fallen out of favor, though I guess that could explain why I haven't heard it in a while.

Wait, wait, wait... are you saying that people assume that because it contains the prefix "trans-," it's therefore the same thing as transgender? Oh, good grief, are people that linguistically naive? Well, no doubt some are. It's not like most schools teach Latin anymore (I'm eternally grateful that mine did, though I wasn't so much at the time). But it makes me wonder what they think of words like "trans-Atlantic" or "transcendence," not to mention the Transformers franchise...

Pretty much. It just gets used to group us women in with the whole transphobic ideology that trans women are just 'predator men in dresses', either as predators of cis women or predators of being gay men trying to trap straight men into sex. You can tell already that the claims contradict one another: there's just no coherent logic to TERFs and transphobes.

But yeah, transvestite is just one of those things that make me cringe, like thinking trans women are just drag queens or something. Some trans women do drag but in my experience most trans women are just...women. We might try to pass as cis or we might openly wear our transness on our shoulder.

This is why I'm so particular about how trans women are played in various forms of media. Qe have zero creative control over our own depiction in media. Look at all the Oscar bait made without a trans person's involvement? Where tropes are constantly re-enforced to make us appear as perverts, freaks, serial killers, selfish, or comedic relief.

ShoutFactorTV has added Kamen Rider Heisei Generations Forever. It seems kind of odd to me that they would add that, but not have most of the series it connects to.
How hard would it be to follow the movie without having seen any of them.

Eh. The nostalgia might not impact you since there are characters from past Kamen Rider series that return. You'll have no connection to them.

It's not hard to follow though. You can watch it and then come back after watching the series to appreciate the nostalgia/past characters/references.

For myself, I was able to follow nostalgia-based seasons like Decade and Zi-O much better after I'd seen the seasons they homaged. But that's just me.

OK. I'm hoping since they added the movie, that means they might eventually add the shows too.

I think that's what they're hoping to do, but they haven't added any new ones since the original and Kuuga. I hope that doesn't mean they're disappointed in the viewership figures.

I said in my other post that they just added the movie, but I just realized that I never actually looked at their movie section before today, so it might have actually been there since they added the original and Kuuga.

Is Kiramei Silver the first 6th Ranger that's been a "Power-Type" character?

Traditionally the "Power-Type" characters are already part of the team, right?

what do you mean by power types?
Usually one member of the team is known as the "Power-Type" where they have extreme Herculean strength above regular humans and even their own team members.

Kyuuranger had Ushi Black with his Robotic Strength

Goseigers had Gosei Black who's the physically strongest, when Blue picked up his Axe, he was surprised at how heavy it was and how easily Goesei Black swings it around.

Kiramager episode 33

We ended the last episode with Eras poised to emerge from underground and spread across earth. No? Oh right. That was last year.

I loved the little figures to represent the mecha and other things. Two ice creams to represent Gigant driller lol and the generic boxy robot figure for Kiramager.

A meta moment should have been the actual toys. No need for explanation how they got toys of Kiramager.

This episode sort of had a finale feel to it

Some fantastic camera work in this episode. The ground/giant battle scene was really well shot. I liked the final shot after the four mecha banded together and used Oradin as a giant arrow - it's like that scene in Dekaranger where everyone fires off the Deka Wing Cannon.Which is also an Arakawa series.

Yes, that was impressive. I wondered if it was one of the better-known directors like Sakamoto, but apparently this 2-parter is from a new director who came over from Ultraman. But it was very clever, the extended ground-level take of the ground battle in the foreground with three giant battles taking place all around it, and the interaction between the two scales. It's hard to bring something new to these giant battles after more than 40 years, but this was innovative.

The episode overall was pretty good, with some clever gambits to save the day -- taking advantage of Crystalian mind transfers to free Oladdin from attack, and using that rock-paper-scissors strategy against the three Jamenju. And seeing the giant-robot equivalent of a team-cannon finisher was pretty novel too, although such things have been done before. (I think there was a Go-Onger episode where they had five giant robots do the Go-Ongers' roll call sequence. It might've been a different series.)

I was disappointed that Sayo didn't think up some sciencey way to defeat the Yodom Ivy seed. It would've been a nice way for her to redeem herself for being tricked into helping to create it last week.

There's some watercooler talk that this new director might be groomed to direct next years sentai Zenkaiger episodes too. That would be pretty neat.

Tragic news that just came in. Mana Kinjo who play Ui in Ryusoulger has passed away. She was only 25.

Alot of attention about her health was brought up in Ryusoulger when her character suddenly stopped appearing for a long time. She made some final appearances toward the end of the series to close out her character.

Translation of statement from a user on rangerboard

"Dear fans: The actress Mana Kinjo, who belonged to our company, died from an illness on December 1st aged 25 years old. We pray for her soul to be happy in the next world. As of last year she had been taking time off, and she was trying her best to be able to return to work, but it wasn't to be. We would like to express our sincerest thanks to everyone who has supported Mana Kinjo and who has supported us. We are truly grateful. Although she was awkward and inexperienced*, she worked hard and faced challenges directly. We hope that you won't forget her smile as she headed towards her dreams."

* This isn't meant negatively - it's almost always included in notices like this as it's not considered polite in Japan to be too boastful about oneself or, in this case, someone who worked for you / that you were associated with

So before we even get any leaks of the next team through toy pictures a tease for a 3 movie special(not a teamup) has revealed a silhouetted Zenkaiger's Red ranger.

Would be interesting if Sentai did a Kamen Rider type of series. Heck Kamen Rider Saber is like a sentai team.

Very interesting design peeking through. Antennae (I smell a Kamen Rider rivalry brewing) and a high collar very reminiscent of Goranger's Akaranger

Very curious to see how the new team looks.

Info about the newly revealed films:

"The currently running 44th Super Sentai Series, Mashin Sentai Kiramager's, following 45th New Super Sentai series has been confirmed to appear in a movie next year, premiering on 2/20/2021. Also, because of the delays due to Covid-19, the 43rd Super Sentai, KishiRyu Sentai Ryusoulger will also appear in their own film, temporarily titled Ryusoulger The Movie, and the Kiramager will appear in their own film, currently titled as Kiramager The Movie; all premiering together.
The 3-film event will be known as "Super Sentai MOVIE Ranger 2021."

Zenkaiger's part will probably be "Episode 0"

Uncannily so, except for being all-male and not having a giant robot (though they sort of do have one with King of Arthur).

What would a KR-style Sentai be like? A bit more mature and darker, maybe with human villains and a clash of philosophies and goals, rather than just evil aliens/monsters out to destroy the world. More serialized plots, maybe regular 2-parters. A team of loners gradually coming together after initially clashing, though we've seen things like that in some Sentai seasons (Hurricaneger, Abaranger, LvP, Ryusoulger to an extent). Maybe something where the monsters are transformed humans to be saved, like KR sometimes did in Heisei Phase 2. (Ryusoulger did something similar with the monsters leeching off of human emotions.)

King Arthur isn't all that big for mecha size.

It's about 2- 3 average Human Heights tall. That's barely 2 stories tall.

As for Zenkaiger, Collars and Forehead V-shaped antenna seem to be a thing.

It sucks that Mana Kinjo passed away at 25, RIP.
