Has SNW Converted Any Non-Trekkies In Your Life?

My wife likes SNW, especially Noonien-Singh. Previously, the only Trek she'd watch by choice were the Pine movies.

I don't know anyone IRL who are even aware of the cartoons. My grandkids are more into various iterations of Godzilla and Fortnite. Not so much Star Wars.

As far as my non-Trekkie friends and family, nope. The general consensus seems to be that SNW is the same stuff that's been running for the past 30 years or so. They really couldn't care less if it's Captain Pike or Captain whoever. It's all "Star Track" to them--people just running around in funny make-up and clothes talking spacey stuff.

It's funny- the Thursday mornings that I'm home have become sort of like the Saturday mornings of my early childhood. Now, instead of a bowl of cereal and Superfriends, Jabberjaw, Stingray, Wheely and the Chopper Bunch and what not, it's roll out of the rack, grab a hot cup of joe, and settle in to watch SNW.

What? No Scooby Doo or Josie and the Pussycats?;)

Hey my childhood Saturday mornings, it was Space Ghost, The Hercuoids, Mighty Mightor, Birdman, and Frankenstein Jr.:techman:;)

(Yeah, I'm old.)

Yes, there were all those shows at different times. Plus animated ST, Speed Racer, Marine Boy, and others. There was one, The Secret Lives of Waldo Kitty, where a cat imagined himself in an animated star trek show about one episode in five.

So far it's shallow compared to DS9. But this is the age of ADHD. So maybe SNW is exactly what they needed.

Nope.

There's nothing at all deep about DS9, really. Maybe it compares well in some folks' mind to other versions of Star Trek, but Trek is the definition of nothing as far as the state of TV overall goes. Which is to say that what might have been "deep" for Trek in the mid-90s was pretty weak tea relative to the best dramas of the time.

My partner isn't a Trekkie to the extent anyone who posts here is, although she's familiar with TNG and VOY. She gave Disco and Picard a go but checked out after one season.

But so far as SNW, she's converted. We've even centred our Sunday "date night" dinner round watching the latest episode! Said it feels more like what Star Trek should be; she likes everyone (particularly Pike and Number One) and thinks there's been good & even character development so far.

She was sold on it before me. I think watching it with her has helped me shed some of the cynicism that'd built up persevering with the other ones.

I think people think of it as deep because it references itself by talking about episodes that aired more than three instalments previously.

Compared to the rest of Star Trek it's deep, but that's an extraordinarily low bar.

None so far. The non trekkers, find the stories silly and stupid. Everyone of my fellow trekkers find SNW watchable and enjoyable. Yet they all pass on D, P, LD, & Prod.

No, many are still more obsessed with marvel or star wars. I heard the obi wan show isn't really that great but a lot of my friends will rather see that than star trek snw.

I always felt the best convert when it comes to trek is star trek 2009.

I don’t know any other Star Trek fans in the ‘real world’. All my Star Trek friends are on the internet… I have a few ‘casual’ real life pretend Star Trek fan friends, but when I try to talk to them about Star Trek they don’t know what I am going on about and kind of zone out, so maybe they are not true fans?

I do know many Star Wars fans in real life though! But likewise I don’t watch that so have nothing much in common with them. I tried to make some of my Star Wars friends watch Picard but that did not win them over. Perhaps the Star Trek fanbase is just too fragmented and there is nothing which brings us all together as a whole? I think that when I make my friends watch Strange New World’s they will love it though!

I never thought snw would have any depth as it is still made by the people of discovery. Also this is one of the disadvantages of episodic story telling. Also a lot of popular stuff today don't have any depth like marvel or star wars and for a long time now the goal of kurtzman is to have trek appeal to the marvel and star wars crowd.

Pretty much. Any time fans start condescendingly calling other fans "canonites" and "purists," as well as some fans loving this Trek series but absolutely hating that one--yeah, that's a divided fanbase.
