Has JJAbramsTrek made Start Trek cool?

Rear Admiral
So from seeing the response on my FB account, there are so many people that I have known for 20 years that I never would of guessed were Trek Fans. Or new to it, the part that surprised me is how many 'hot's girls are into it. I'd say that almost every 'hot' girl that I know either through FB or person (but again every FB friend I have I do actually know in person).

And of all the 'hot' girls that are into are what you'd imagine that evey Trekkie fantasies about a girl being a 'Trekkie'. I can tell you that there are at least 6-7 girls I have on my FB, and do know in person that are hot that loved the movie. And until the movie came out I had no idea they were into Trek.

Until now it seems like Trek was the secret of people, and now it seems like if you don't like Trek... or JJ-Trek you are not 'cool'.

I'd like to see what this has done for DVD sales of TOS, TNG, DS9, Voygager, Enterprise.

A lot of my friends who have never been Trek fans have shown a great deal of interest in this movie. Those who have seen it have thought it was awesome. Hopefully that's a good sign for the future.

God I hope not. Ill have to find a new nerdy hobby ;)

EDIT: On a side note, one thing Im really not liking (and its something I see with my friends) is that some people are watching this movie, and saying its vastly superior and "non-gay" when compared to older trek...and yet these people never watched the old stuff. it makes me go :wtf:

Same here. At my work, we have a department that is staffed by mostly recent college graduates, a good portion of them your typical Bay Area hipster types, the sort of people who don't own a television. They were, I do not exaggerate, giddy over the movie.

Two things this movie did that for me, sealed the deal:

1) It made the characters into living, breathing people, folks we can actually relate to, instead of the slightly antiseptic, highly cultured paragons of the old days. (But then, I'm a big Beastie Boys fan, so I might be biased.) ;)

2) It recast the Trek universe in a mold that speaks to the post-9/11 world. It recognizes that hope is most important in the face of tragedy and human pain.

3) It didn't look like it was made on a shoestring budget. Appearances count, people.

I'm sorry but I really didn't feel much of a sense of "hope" from the film. If nothing, it left me a little cold. I mean, they threw a NOKIA phone into Star Trek. Is Nokia really going to still be around in 200 years and STILL making phones? Does Nokia charge people a monthly service fee in the "everyone-works-for-the-betterment-of-humanity" economy of the future?

I don't know, I just don't like the new universe, it's too... dumb and commercial (did I mention the PRODUCT PLACEMENT?)... with too many pointless lens flares, shaky "pukeinator" camera shots and close-ups of close-ups. I'm not saying you can't use some of those techniques sparingly but the new movie used them as a crutch to elevate tension even when there wasn't any. I feel a little manipulated by the hype and the herd mentality.

I genuinely miss the old universe. This may sound ridiculous but I have this almost "my-dad-had-a-midlife-crisis-and-left-my-mom-for-a-younger-stupider-woman" feeling about it all. Not that that happened, my father is no longer with us but still. The new movie was entertaining on a base level (in the same way a roller coaster is entertaining) but it was also... empty and the feeling doesn't last. And the more you ride it, the sicker you get.

So... not only has JJ made "Start Trek" "non-gay", he reduces TOS to being "gay" by mere comparison.

Is it gay? Maybe this is something that I missed.

Yes, Abrams made Star Trek cool. Very cool, as a matter of fact. It may be to fast or flashy of brainless for some of us, but I think spicing it up for a larger audience was a smart thing to do and essential for the future of the franchise, which, and let's be honest here, was become a rather stale niche type of cult thing.

YAY!! The hot girls like Star Trek now!!

LOL!!

But seriously, new Trek is "cool" now because it's been extremely dumbed down from old Trek.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it. But it's like nuTrek is Corky Thatcher, and oldTrek is Albert Einstein. So people don't have to think at all when watching it, which, sadly, is what most people want from their entertainment these days.

"non-gay" is a direct quote from a few people I know. ill ask them what it means but I don't think Ill get a good answer since they never really gave the original shows a shot anyways ;)

And by hot I mean Jessica Alba hot.....

I think what may of made JJAbrams Trek cool is that now you are getting the essence of Trek, the characters, the adventure but updating it and not throwing in the "subspace inversion field with a polaron phase discriminator" thrown in. As with the eject the warp cores scene. It was if we eject the warp core can the explosion throw us clear? It was just that... with Scotty saying "I think so"... nothing about subspace fields, quantum yields, inverse gravitons.. etc.

You still have Kirk\Spock friendship building, the adventure is out there. But still capture the basic idea of Star Trek... the final frontier is out there.

You can take this story line, and adapt to a modern time lime. Nero is mad at Spock, he sees Spock as the cause of his vengeance. Cut out the time travel, and it can be something 9/11... Spock didn't stop the terrorists from hijacking the planes. Nero can be a construction worker who blames someone who had intelligence, he takes it out on that persons family. Spocl is the father\grandfather of those that die. He asks the son of someone who died to help him stop the husband of a woman who died.

Throw in Star Trek, and you have a whole new audience, those who want to see how Kirk\Spock became friends. How Scotty wound up being an engineer, Sulu helmsman, etc.

The original timeline, since they may most likely didn't have family die on the Kelvin, not be all that different from what we saw from the Kelvin on.

Yes it has. I was surprised how many of my friends who never gave a damn about Star Trek (the "Doctor Spock" or worse kind of people) are thrilled by this new film. I think it's great. Unlike many, I like it when things I care about become popular. :)

Hot girls like trek now?

A lot of women like trek, married one, but theres a difference between being a fan and being obsessive. The difference between enjoying a show, caring about its characters and remembering a few names, and knowing it inside out and judging those who dare to know less. Some fans are scary, some are just boring.

Star Trek is in the cinemas at the moment, its a good film and some of the people that liked it will be girls, and some of those girls will be hot, but think about it, how many other films are given a second thought a week after you've seen it?

Its not that Trek was ever uncool, its the scary followers.

Oh, and anyone who believes that describing this new well made film as 'dumbed down' to a girl that enjoyed it will get them laid. :guffaw:

I know about 8-10 girls that are now obsessed with Spock. I just find it entertaining to be there whenever that subject is brought up; they absolutely go nuts and blush and get all excited about him. Same goes with Chris Pine.

What makes this so hilarious is that these girls are not really the kind that you can imagine them saying that they are in love with a character from Star Trek...let alone, get excited about watching a sci-fi movie.

He took the old fans out of the "nerdy" corner and put them straight into the "geek chic" corner. I love it. Star Trek is now officially cool. :D

Sure, why not? Comics are cool these days because of a bunch of bad-ass movies--its not like there's anything inherantly geekier about pointy eared aliens than there is about guys who dress up in bright spandex and flip around all the time. Hell, even Lord of the Rings is pretty mainstream acceptable because of the movies.
