Has irreparable damage been done to Star Trek's brand?

Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. People are celebrating -- and should -- because it had a strong opening weekend and, I guess, less loss of viewers for the second weekend than is more common, but how is it doing in both adjusted dollars and compared to its production and marketing costs? I suspect it's a success regardless, but I wonder if the elusive "mainstream viewer" has truly shown up in large numbers or if a lot of this is still being driven as always by ardent fans seeing it a half dozen or more times, only this time along with a much smaller number of general moviegoers than could be hoped.
Take a look at this thread for a fairly detailed breakdown. There's a couple different messages there that give you each film in terms of raw dollars, inflation-adjusted figures, and profit vs. production and advertising budgets. Trek XI is doing pretty well all the way around.

A summer blockbuster gets almost universal positive reviews. It has a well known brand name. It has a big budget. It's doing okay at the box office, but not that great.

Who is at fault? What has occurred over the past decade(s) to devalue the Star Trek image?

wow... lol. you have a star trek shrine don't you? >_< else the criticism doesn't make sense. it's doing great in theaters. only missed number one spot again in past weekend by about 5 million. other movies have not done so well. see wolvercrap. were you expecting it to make 51616 billion in one weekend? >_> is that what it has to make in order for it to do well by your eyes?

if this is a joke post... >_< yes i fell for it.

Everything after TNG.

I think DS9 was great, but once they brought Voyager out to run with DS9 it went down hill. DS9 was trying to move with TV and arced storylines, Voyager just went back to the old formula which has killed the series as we know it.

Why is it being successful a bad thing, I don't understand. Star trek is set up to be in the top 5 movies by the end of the year, although terminator Salvation, Transformers, HP6, and possibly even Avatar have a shot at beating it (for some a lot more than just a shot). But still, for a star trek film to be one of the largest films of the year is huge. What really killed star trek was a little bit of voyager, to much enterprise, and the worst idea ever, nemesis (even though the film is slightly enjoyable.)

As a life long fan who had drifted away, I found myself reading ST heavily again, watching the shows, etc as a result of the anticipation for this movie. During the movie, I decided to watch TMP again at the earliest opportunity, as I was reexperiencing the feelings of a new adventure beginning that I had last felt with TMP.

If Star Trek as a brand fails, it will be because certain fans helped kill it, not this movie. Unfortunately, too many who have bought into their own personal mythology of Star Trek (and the myths that have grown up around it) seem eager to see it fail rather than see a mechanism for keeping the entire franchise (original, TNG, Abramsverse, whathave you) alive.

It seems the height of illogic for Trekfans to be upset about the movie. Hate the content but don't hate the intent. The intent is to earn enough to pay it a little forward - equity as it were. People's amusement over Trekkies arguing over minutia may turn them off and if they spend their money on other franchises we all lose.

I agree. The new Star Trek caters to the youthful love of explosions, dripping blood, sex on screen and undisciplined conduct. I wish I could just get up from my station at work and have long lingering kisses with my Vulcan lover just because he's going out of the office for a second. I wish I could munch on a twinky while cheating on an exam and become the big boss of my company simply because I hid under a bed and then kicked my manager out of the big chair by being rude and personal about his momma. It would be nice to live in an alternate universe where I had blue eyes instead of hazel and anything went just because alternate universes allows me to do so. I fear that this is the beginning of a very rotten era in the star trek (alternate) universe.

Negative word of mouth certainly killed "Nemesis" dead in its tracks. Every other ST movie had lines of moviegoers waiting impatiently for the movie to open on premiere night.

How did you ever cope when Saavik's eyes went from green to brown, her eyebrows went from arched to slanted, and she got herself a perm?

You know, this is convincing if you don't understand the context of these events. Then again, if you don't understand the context of 1) Spock stealing a ship because of loyalty to one man, 2) Kirk demanding to continue a war when he has a chance to stop it, 3) Kirk providing weapons to a peaceful people to "balance things out, 4) Kirk getting "demoted" as a reward for committing mutiny and piracy, 5) Kirk insulting his first officer to get him to come to his senses, 6) Saavik helping Spock through pon far when Spock wasn't competent to consent, and various other TOS/TMP era incidents, they look "very rotten" as well.

As for flashy explosions, blood, etc, I think that defines most of the most popular and profitable ST in recent times. STII, STIII, STVI, First Contact, and the war years of DS9. Even the last (and generally most highly regarded) season of Enterprise falls in that category.

That's an incredibly disingenuous way of presenting those events -- one that completely ignores context and actual content in favor of superficiality.

Next time you save the entire planet, give us a call and we may cut you some slack on a lot of that stuff too. :techman:
