Spoilers Has "Discovery" impacted how you now view "TOS" episodes?

I always felt that one of the big issues in all those is it or isn't it canon would in the end mostly come down to how people personally feel because nothing they can do will ever altered what has already been filmed and aired on "TOS." The question though is when you watch "TOS" now does what you have seen on "Discovery" ever impact how you view what someone like Spock or Sarek for example are doing within in the "TOS" episode. For example do for even one moment ever think Nimoy's Spock might be doing something because he learned it from Burnham or do you still kind of go with the sort of backstory you have always had in your head about the character?

Me it hasn't changed my views really but then it could just be a matter of time where I get more used to thinking of the "Discovery" additions. Not sure how I will still feel in like 5 years or so.

Not really. My mind refuses to view Spock in Discovery and Spock in TOS as quite the same character, and this is coming from someone who really likes Discovery Spock.

The only effect Discovery really has - and it's a positive one - is on The Menagerie. Pretty sure even people who can't stand Discovery approved of the way it treated Pike for the most part. Spock's decision to take Pike to the Talosians feels a lot more coherent now, I'd never really liked the episode or its conclusion before as it was such an obvious attempt to recycle The Cage. The framing device was a great idea to justify using that footage, but it was still a blatant way to build an episode around existing footage.

Other than that, it has the same effect as every Star Trek series has on every other, so the procedure is the same - take the bits you like, ignore the bits you don't, construct your own headcanon, then get into massive internet fights over it.

Not in the slightest. I still (mostly) detest TOS just as much as I always have. For me, Leonard Nimoy's Spock is basically the only saving grace. That isn't going to change anytime soon.

then get into massive internet fights over it.
Yeah ... I try to avoid that.

This is kind of how I feel. In retrospect i kind of wished they had used or brought up Sybok. I think just having that character established in Spock's past and even maybe even show him live Vulcan would make Burnham as his sister feel more natural. Even Spock talking about Sybok to his parents when he knows he can never talk about Burnham or the Discovery again or kind of establish the fact that Spock has already been down this path before.

Eh not sure I agree with this. It didn't add anything to the Vina/Pike relationship -- it just showed us scenes on the Enterprise of Pike being overwhelmed by how much he loved her, but there's no real thought or motivation given. It's still on the viewer to simply accept that he loved her and fill in the blanks on the relationship. Which is basically the same thing the Menagerie asks us to do.

And nothing at all was added to the Talosians. We learn basically nothing new about them and they weirdly work out some kind of deal with Burnham to share her pain that comes off as Sybok-esque voyeurism because it's detached from the pathos of their backstory ("when dreams become more important than reality you stop living...") presented in the Cage. It does nothing to help us understand them and reduces their presence/mental capacity to nothing more than a plot contrivance.

The black hole scene was cool though.

I'm no Discovery fan as you know but I did think Anson Mount was the season's only saving grace! Ethan Peck as Speck is no Leonard Nimoy for sure and isn't as memorable as Zachary Quinto in the new movies! But on FB yesterday I had a few people on the I Hate Discovery page trying to pull me to the side over me saying mount was good!!! I tried to explain to them that he was no Jeffrey Hunter but they wouldn't have it and continued on their hate fest with the show! But the thing that really got me was that they liked ENT and accepted it for all it's many faults!!! :ack:

Yes. Because I'm awkward...

but seriously I have rewatched a bit of TOS recently with the tie in to DSC in mind and it does make the environment seem that little richer, especially viewing Spock as someone who had been on a journey to get to this place rather than being born on the bridge of the Enterprise. It also makes it interesting seeing him as someone who knows an awful lot that he cannot share, even where it might have been relevant (artificial intelligence and time travel, not to mention starfleets' dark underbelly our idealistic heroes seem blissfully unaware of).

You guys are posting multiple spoilers for Discovery without tags! The rule is six months after airdate. Which means you can't talk about season 2 at all until July without spoiler warnings.

Rather than edit the posts in question, I coded the thread title.

Jayson...you really try my patience.

Certainly because the Timeline is Prime, but remember that DSC must be TOSsified in one’s mind before incorporation, which means imagining what the show would’ve looked like had it been made in the early 1960s.

TOS will always stand alone as it should, the Genesis of all I love about science fiction. I must be truthful when I say Discovery is long overdue. TOS looks like Saturday matinee by modern standards. BSG was updated as was LIS. Now, because of Discovery, we have the opportunity to go back, to the times before our favorite crew took command of the Enterprise.

I feel or hope that this was the intent all along. Why else would the creators insist on beginning the saga pre Kirk? Why, so they can update the classic tale in a more sophisticated format, with the budget Star Trek deserves. When Pike hands the reigns over to Kirk, that's when the updated Star Trek begins.

Like managers of any super secret project, You put Discovery over there, Picard over here, dangle an animated project and a S31 project over here and over there. While in the meantime, the real goal, hidden by the hand fakes, "Star Trek, The Original Voyages of the Enterprise" is brought to life.

That's my theory, my idea, anyway. I can dream. The negativity towards the Star Trek project I think comes from people who can't see what might be.

nBSG and LiS were fearlessly rebooted. DSC felt it had to do something but not too much, with a lot of retooling for S2 and now S3.
