A friend of mine is there today, as it happens, for the Grand Prix. I'm seeing her later this week for lunch, so I'll get a full report then.
Still waiting for this later in the week, but I happened to be chatting to a couple of other folks I know about the UAE.
The mother of one of the girls in my team apparently lived in Dubai for many years prior to the recent rapid development burst, and so she knew Dubai a bit too. She said that it used to have a complete dearth of anything approaching what I guess we would call consumerist pleasures but obviously that's totally out of date now. If anything they've swung completely the other way, though lacking refinement.
The other person I spoke to (the owner of one of my favourite cafes and chocolate shops) visits Dubai regularly, and is from Kuwait. Shrewd fellow, he spotted that the aforementioned girl I was with in the shop was wearing a Dubai gold souk copy of a Cartier design ring, which is how we ended up talking about the UAE. He backed up my comments upthread, saying that Dubai, in contrast to Kuwait, is actively trying to expand outside of oil as a revenue stream but that the recession has put the kibosh on a lot of the more extravagant building projects. Still very much a "boomtown" mentality though.

I went to school with a guy from Abu Dhabi. But that was 20 years ago. He does occasionally post stories about Abu Dhabi on his facebook page.
