I've gone back and forth on it.
- Disliked it the first time I saw it (not helped by it being at IMAX at midnight; action scenes were near-impossible to follow).
- Liked it the second time (could actually follow the action scenes this time)
- Disliked it the third time (had time to actually sit back and think about it, and it started to bug me
- Really disliked it the fourth time (watched it with a non-Trek fan, which always makes me self-conscious, and on DVD, which negates the impact of the effects and sound. She picked up most of the things that bugged me, too)
I suppose ultimately I'm just disappointed. I wanted two things for this film - to be a stand-alone success, and, more importantly, to revive awareness in the wider Star Trek...I hate the word, but "franchise".
It did the former, certainly, but I feel it failed at the latter. I head to local bookstores, and there's even fewer Trek books than before. The TV series and movies haven't had a sudden jump in interest. Nobody I know has suddenly become a Trek fan, or has expressed any sort of interest in the series. Maybe that colours my perception of the film a bit as well.
