I think it's problematic to date your boss or your subordinate because of the power imbalance. (Although, it seems to have worked out for the Obama family. She was his boss when she was a lawyer and he was a summer intern.) Co-workers are fine in that respect, but it's important to beware of the potential for awkwardness or conflict if the relationship sours. (It's probably wiser to confine workplace relationships to people in other departments.)
Right now, I'm in a weird situation where I'm interested in one of my (law school) professors. (I'm getting indications from him that the interest is mutual. He hasn't crossed any ethical lines, but the tension/chemistry is definitely there.) I recognize that it's the same situation as dating the boss, so I know it's problematic. However, I'm thinking of asking him out when the semester is over. I'll never have him for another class because I've taken all the classes he teaches. He's single, he's a younger professor, and I'm an older student.

Only twice have I ever had immediate supervisors who were young enough or attractive enough to consider dating. And both of them were married (or close enough to it). When I was an intern at Congressman Flake's office, there was this very sexy constituent liason. Think Krista Miller from The Drew Carey Show.
Once, I did ask out a co-worker to lunch. She was a manager. I wasn't. But since we worked for different departments, I didn't think there would be a problem. There have been several successful inter-office romances at the old bookstore where I worked. When the day came, she stood me up. I couldn't get a straight answer out of her after that. Never dated a "boss" but I've "dated" several of my employees. Lots of fun, usually ends in disaster though. Most of the time they leave or I have to fire them for something. Typically they get an attitude that they can get away with shit cause I'll back them. Their mistake.

I think you missed the relevant "classy" part of that text. "Typically they get an attitude that they can get away with shit cause I'll back them. Their mistake." Now THAT'S what I call "classy". Some chick thinks she can get away with crap that they know they couldn't get away with before just cause they get intimint with the boss. Yeah sure, now that is real class there.

I've actually dated two from the same place of employment.
The first one was the GM who asked me if I wanted to hang out at her place. She'd never seen a Star Wars film and I brought Revenge of the Sith and savored the huge gasp when Samuel L. Jackson gets his ass kicked by Palpatine.
The second boss I've been dating for almost three years now and we're still getting along really well, considering we spend almost every waking moment together either at home or at work.
