Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed...

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

It should be the other way around...esp considering how DREDFUL the last two books are...

I didn't think the last two books were "DREADFUL" . . . just dark.

As for HALF-BLOOD PRINCE making a great deal of money at the box office . . . not really surprised. But I am curious . . . why does that bother you? A good number of my favorite movies, lately, hardly do well at the box office.

Because the book it's based on is so terrible. If Rowling had quit after OoTP, I'd not be griping. But she didn't, and books 6 and 7 are the result.

A story that bad doesn't deserve to do that good. Trek, with all it's plot flaws, was the superior film, and I'm just deeply saddened that the box take doesn't reflect that.

I dont disagree at all about the quality of the final two books, total and utter crap they are, it's like books one to five didnt happen...

That said, the movie fanchise has only bared a passing resemblance to the books since POA, and are really a totally different animal at this point.

As such, despite my complete dislike for the book, I dont mind the film being sucessful.

Also, Harry Potter is infinitely more popular than Star Trek, so the fact it is making money so much more quickly (a quarter of Trek's total box office in one day) is hardly a surprise.

Kids. It's all because of kids.

It's far easier to please them and Harry Potter is more successful globally than Star Trek. It's far easier to get a lot of kids hooked on a story like Harry Potter than to get them hooked on Star Trek, which struggles in other countries as it is.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

Some parents must go to kids' movies with them, so right there it's an increase in the box office. Same with UP.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

Star Trek did well at the box office, but did anyone really expect it to outperform Harry Potter or Transformers? I didn't.

You could slap "Harry Potter" on a steaming pile of moose turds and it would clear half a billion.

Hell, if you called Nemesis "Harry Potter and the Attack of the Clone" then it would've been a hit.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

As someone once told me, "There's plenty of success to go around for everybody." I've heard it's good and I wish it well.

Yep. There was no reason to expect other than this, and the Harry Potter stories are just as worthy of their popularity as Trek is.

Hell, if you called Nemesis "Harry Potter and the Attack of the Clone" then it would've been a hit.

You could probably slap "Star Trek" on a Harry Potter film and drive the box office down by tens of millions of dollars.

Couldn't get a rise out of anyone with that over in SF&F, so you decided to bring it over here, eh, darkwing?

Honestly, I don't think anyone's terribly surprised that the new Harry Potter is doing giant-sized opening box-office numbers; it would have been far more surprising if it hadn't. A franchise which is able to sell out an entire first printing of a book in a matter of hours, as Harry Potter has done more than once, is very likely to be matched by similar performance by the movie adaptation the theater; that's just to be expected.

No, this thread is primarily about box office. I find it depressing that a film with such a bad story should do so well compared to a film that had such a GOOD story.
If it's about box-office, then I fail to see where the issue lies. Box-office take is all about audience. Star Trek managed to increase its audience size pretty dramatically, and can be counted a success on those terms, but the audience for Harry Potter movies is already far greater, having done its building-up over several previous successful outings, while Star Trek's was at the same time dwindling to the pathetic levels of Nemesis' turnout. For Star Trek to outperform HPatHBP at the box office was simply never a realistic expectation for anyone to hold, no matter what one's opinion of the relative qualities of the stories involved might be (are you sure this was really about box office?)

Face it: Harry Potter is huge, and would have done big opening-weekend numbers even if the movie had been complete crap (which does not thus far seem to be the prevailing opinion, from what I've seen); success was practically built-in, for that movie. Star Trek did very well, by any yardstick you care to use, but it was never, ever going to catch Harry -- not in this universe.

Star Trek has beaten one of the HP movies, has it not?

Will you stop complaining about the foreign take already? It's getting extremely old and repetitive.

WHAT WENT WRONG?!?!?

NEVER.

We are allowed to discuss it and analyze it to death, tough cookies if you don't want to.

The new Star Trek can't be compared to any of the sequels coming out now because they come from recent established successful franchises. You can argue that Star Trek is a 40 year franchise, but not with this new cast. In that regard, the film is a brand new movie. Transformers and Harry Potter (and even the Pirate movies) are current smashes, and people are going to rush to see the sequels. Harry Potter is also unique because it's a continuing story of books. It's also why Twilight will be a huge hit later this year when it's next movie comes out and will probably surpass Star Trek also.

Audiences sampled the new Star Trek, and they ended up loving it (minus the minority of haters). The real test for Star Trek will be the numbers for its sequel.

scottydog, there you are again. I've missed Heidi Worf. Or Leia Worf.

I've never left, you silly goose. I do spend wayy too much time in the Vice Admiral lounge.

Here's a bold prediction. Harry Potter has reached its peak with this new movie and will begin a downward slide in subsequent movies. Star Trek, in contrast, is on an upward trajectory and will beat HP at the box office, probably two movies from now.

Yes, you do. You should spend it here. But weren't you wearing a different avatar for a while? I thought you had something else on...
