Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed...

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

Ah well, there's no accounting for taste. Besides, Star Trek XI was successful, and other good movies deserve success, too.

I thought the last two books were fantastic.

What, specifically, did you not like about them?

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

Why should Harry Potter's box office cause anyone emotional distress? The Harry Potter film franchise is one of the most successful (in terms of box office) of all time. Star Trek had a wonderfully successful run for a reboot. But it was never destined to do better business than Potter.

I have no interest whatsover in Harry Potter but I'd shag all kinds of magic out of JK Rowling. That woman is hot!

Um, what are we talking about?

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

scottydog, there you are again. I've missed Heidi Worf. Or Leia Worf.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

Well I just saw The Half-Blood Prince and it was pretty, well, I wouldn't call it boring, but not a lot happens in 2 1/2 hours. Still good, but not what you'd call exciting.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

no need to be depressed. we did good.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

Damn good. Time to stand down until the DVD comes out.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

Considering I thought it would do well to do Paul Blart numbers, I'm extremely happy with Star Trek's performance.

Besides, it did beat out some other heavy-hitters, including one of the HP movies.

If done as well or better, I think the next one will surpass 300 million domestic, easily.

As for the rest of the world....

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

Considering that Harry Potter is based on the most popular young-adult books ever, and hardly a moribud franchise like Trek was, I don't see why anyone should be depressed that it does better than ST09.

Hell, that's what we have to remember. The Trek franchise was stone-cold dead before May, 2009. Now, with a sequel coming, it's poised to enter the ranks of the super-franchises.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

As someone once told me, "There's plenty of success to go around for everybody." I've heard it's good and I wish it well.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

Frankly I'm amazed that people are still so crazy about Potter after all these years.

Yeah I thought the first book, when it came out, was a fun read with some pretty clever writing. And the world it created was pretty cool too.

But holy shit, by the third book I was OVER it already and ready to move on. This world stopped feeling fresh and unique a long time ago, and now just seems really tired and formulaic. I don't know why everyone else hasn't gotten bored with it too.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

The last two books are clearly the best in the series and this last movie was great. No reason to be angry at HP.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

I saw it Wednesday night and I thought it was an excellent movie.

Re: Harry Potter does 1/4 Trek's TOTAL box in one day...I am depressed

Eh, Transformers passed Star Trek's total domestic take in the first four days of its release (Star Trek had been out for nearly two months).

If you use popularity and box office take as a measure of quality you'll go insane. I've been cringing watching people watching the numbers like a hawk since day one, comparing it to past movies, etc.

Next year, some other movie will break all sorts of box office records. And the year after that, etc. Heck, population growth alone will ensure that movies will keep making more and more money, and the more 'family friendly' a movie's perceived to be, the more people will see it. I would separate it from any idea of quality in my mind if I were you.

Because it's an interesting story and world that gets fleshed out more and more with each book.

I was thinking about going to see it at the IMAX this weekend; but now that they had a fire on the roof of that theater, maybe not. It was one of the heating/cooling units up there.

Apparently, the theater got smoke inside it, too. That's the one where I was always seeing Star Trek. Viewers got their Harry Potter interrupted and were given a showing in another theater.

.

Well, look at it this way- now they've got a convertible theater.

*rimshot*

People have to remember also that Star Trek was the first film in this series. To get people into the theater, it needed word of mouth.

The sequel won't need it. Look at Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and the difference in profit for those two films.
