Saw it today, and I enjoyed it. The visuals were outstanding, and it was the best direct adaptation since movie 2 (not that it was that hard, since this movie was basically the last quarter of the book, if that.)

But I had the same reaction to the film I've had to all of the movies though, and that is I just didn't feel connected to the characters and the action onscreen the whole time. I'm a huge fan of the books, and while most of the actors did a fantastic job with what they were given (go McGonagall in particular! :D,) I just didn't feel the emotion of what was happening and the last live-action saga just went through the numbers. That's basically exactly what I expected, but I admit I kinda hoped they would do more with the final installment. The silly throwaway Hermione lines about Dumbledore's history in particular were ridiculous...seriously, how does she know that stuff!

Saw it in 3D btw...you could really tell which scenes they put effort into and which ones they didn't...it was either "hey cool, those stone soldiers/exploding Dark Lord/dementors around the castle/etc. are really here!" or "oh look, in this dialogue scene Ron's shoulders are slightly behind Harry's." I hope someday soon studios either commit to filming in 3D from the start like Avatar or knock it off with the half-assed conversions.

P.S. The various cameos were cool, but some were just crazy...poor Hagrid, who showed up to cry after Harry died, then later to walk up, hug Harry, say "Harry," then awkwardly walk away. It was too big of a cast for the film makers to handle, it would seem.

This is the main reason I would have liked this film to be about 20-30 minutes longer, just to give more time to all the extra background characters that we've grown to love throughout the last 7 movies.

I'm glad they changed the finale fight. Harry has never been portrayed as a Spider-Man esque hero. It came out of nowhere in the book.
I don't see how that was Spider-Man-esque at all. It's a lengthy speech explaining fully all the ways that Voldemort has erred over the course of the story.
Yeah, and it went so long, and in such ridiculous detail, that I thought they stood an excellent chance of going on to debate whether strawberry or butter pecan is the better ice-cream flavor, and just whether or not Emma's pixie haircut suits her. :scream: :p

I had intended to post my thoughts yesterday, but we got in rather late. Anyway, I'm in total agreement with what several folks have already said... Part 2 was a fitting conclusion to the film series. It's been at least three years I think since I read the book, so while I couldn't remember all the details, it seemed to me that the really important ones were there in the film.

As always, Dan, Em and Rupert did a superb job with their characters. All of the cast were great, with a big thumbs up as well to Ralph Fiennes and Alan Rickman.

Personally, I didn't feel that the movie needed the epilogue and could've ended with the three of them standing hand in hand on the remains of the bridge, but that's a minor quibble. All in all, I enjoyed it greatly, and will look forward to adding the DVD to our collection down the road.

Watched it last night. Loved it. I wouldn't have minded an extra 5-10 minutes of pure character (I feel like there were some things that were glossed over too quickly) but overall I was very happy with the film.

They should have included some of Harry's verbal smackdown of Voldemort. It was a satisfying scene with Voldemort's mystique literally being stripped away from him.

I still don't know how they managed to fuck up Fred's death. They completely destroyed the impact of it by making it happen off-screen and you can't even tell it's him when Ron gets there. Steve Kloves...the writer who is capable of making bad movie scenes out of great book scenes.

I saw the film in 3D last night. My advice for everyone is DO NOT SEE THIS FILM IN 3D! It's easly the worst conversion into 3D I've seen so far. Barely anything comes out onto the screen at you and worse, it made the entire picture dark and hard to see. It just goes to show you that if you want a movie to be in 3D, FILM THE FUCKING THING IN 3D!

Yeah, I'm far from sold on the idea of 3D films at this point. I've yet to go see one, mainly because I don't relish the notion of sitting there with those silly glasses perched over my own for two hours plus.

When they can finally refine the technology to the point where you don't NEED extra viewing assistance, then I'll be there. But for now, I can do without.

:techman: Too right.

Have you seen Clash of the Titans? I have to say, THAT was the worst conversion to 3D I have seen. In this Potter movie, there were at least a handful of things that were filmed in 3D ... Titans was, in my opinion, terrible. It should serve as an example to studios why they should never do a rush-job on conversion, and also why if you're going to do 3D, do it from the beginning, don't decide to do it two weeks before the movie comes out.

Thankfully I never saw that...I heard the conversion was awful and I think it was the first one to do it after Avatar.

I have no problem with 3D films if they are shot in 3D. The first two I've seen in 3D are Avatar, which was shot in 3D and Cameron did an amazing job with that. Then Toy Story 3, which looked almost as good. It's been pretty downhill from there. Although Thor wasn't bad in 3D.

Havent read the books, havent been a huge fan of the films. they aren't bad, but they arent amazing.

You really should try giving the books a read. As much as I've enjoyed the films, I've found the books to be far more engaging and the extra detail that the novels can deliver makes for a richer and more rewarding story, IMO.

Exactly.

So much gets left out of the movies that had been fabulous in the novels.

They're worth the read.

I went and saw it again today, I think it's better the second time around because I noticed so much more.

So I will firmly give it an A, but only 8.5 out of 10 stars.

Chamber of Secrets used to be your favorite? Weird. That is easily my least favorite.

However, I will say that I have grown to like a lot more since the release of the last few movies. It's so much more important than I ever thought it would be.

It was my favorite because it was the closest to the book and the book is my second favorite of the series. My first being Order of the Phoenix but I can't stand how badly they gutted it for the movie so the movie is my least favorite.

Order of the Phoenix is my favorite movie.

One thing I've noticed: people who have read the books prefer the opposite movies from the people who haven't read the books.

I've noticed that too

I think it's because we have this idea in our head that is so strict to the form of the book that when the film comes out and that idea is massacred we'll rebel against it.

Ergo, my feelings about Order of the Phoenix and Goblet of Fire :p
