Harry Morgan, RIP

Nothing in there about dementia.

It's also possible at that age he might have been starting to suffer from a mild form of senile dementia and the incident was related to that.

Until shown otherwise, I'll just assume this is unfounded speculation.

Yes, it is speculation. But I've seen cases before of people who suddenly undergo personality charges, and sometimes act out violently, in the early stages of alzheimer's or senile dementia. Assuming no prior history of domestic violence it would be a possible explanation for why a man in his late 70s or early 80s was, for the first time in his life, arrested for assaulting his spouse. It was meant to be compassionate for the deceased, not disrespectful.

Aside from Col. Potter in M*A*S*H and Det. Gannon in Dragnet, my favorite role of his was Marshall Thibedoux from John Wayne's last film, The Shootist. A bit of a weasel, and yet Harry made him a little likable too. A hidden gem.

Having known neither of my grandfathers (both dead before I was born) Harry Morgan was something of an idealized grandfather-figure of mine, growing up. I still use expressions like "Horse hockey!" or "Bull cookies!", thanks to Colonel Potter.

Vaya con Dios, sir.

Harry Morgan was the man. A fantastic actor, and it was a shame to hear of his passing.

I posted something about it on Facebook, and I was actually kind of pleased to get quite a few responses to it. The number of posts on this thread is encouraging, too.

I still need to see "The Shootist."

Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen.

My favorite moment was when Frank climbed into the tank to impress Margaret even though he couldn't drive one. He lost control, Col. Potter drove his jeep in the path of the tank to try and stop it. After Frank crushed the jeep with the tank, Col. Potter pulls out his pistol and shoots the jeep to put it out of its misery.

I enjoyed watching Harry Morgan in Dragnet and MASH, and don't forget his guest appearances in series and movies. I still can't believe he appeared in "The Shootist", "Support Your Local Sheriff"
Is it true that that he appeared in the film "How The West Was Won"?
Thank God for reruns and tv channels like ME TV and RTV!

James

For many many years a "go to" actor in Hollywood, and created a couple of iconic characters. Interestingly, his bio stated that he never appeared on a talk show, because he felt it would put too much attention on him, and as a character actor that was not his job. As for his arrest, while domestic violence is always intolerable, I agree with the poster that it is unusual for someone to suddenly become a batterer at 80, and it may have had to do with a medical situation. So, he was human.

Farewell Mr. Morgan. Thanks for the laughs.

I was just thinking about this song the other day that Col. Potter liked:
"I love to go swimming with bow-legged women,
And swim between their legs,
Swim between their legs...

I didn't remember him singing it so quickly as it was so memorable. Seems like everyone remembers that.

He rarely wore out his welcome in any role, always enjoyable.

Rest in peace, sir. You'll be forever missed :(. Really enjoyed seeing him as Col. Potter in M*A*S*H and he was one good character actor.
